Notice TRAIL BLAZERS ANNOUNCE NEW TELEVISION BROADCAST PARTNERSHIP WITH ROOT SPORTS (2 Viewers)

For accessibility and the amount of platforms, root is a drastic downgrade. No streaming services, Hulu and YouTube are out as options.

It's like the Comcast thing from years ago.
Couldn't we all write to YouTubeTV and get them to add Root? They may be already considering it.

Another way for the Blazers to give fans less options? My goodness, the really seem to want to make it difficult and limiting. If Comcast is the only option....that is an epic fail.

This is no different then when they went to Comcast what, 15 years ago? I'm not switching tv providers again just to watch the Blazers ( I looked into it, and it was going to cost about 40 bucks more a month more). No offense to the Blazers, but you aren't worth an extra 480 bucks a year.

Well if Comcast would have up there market to Dish and direct tv then maybe they wouldn't been put on the shelf. Where I live we don't get Comcast so all games got black out when nbatv show the the games. To many people got black out because of Comcast even if you had the NBA pass you would get black out. So Comcast did it there selves. Now I am happy due I do get root tv.

Trying to kill fan interest before selling and moving the team.

I just moved back to Oregon (central). How is it that it was cheaper and easier for me to watch the Blazers will in an external market thru league pass than it is while in the state?

I really hope there is a viable streaming option because I can't even get Comcast where I live.

I watched some of the free pirated links when I was on vacation in Mexico and was really impressed with the quality.

There has been rumors that the NBA is setting things up for a major streaming service like Netflix or Amazon to get all the rights for all the teams. If this Root Sports thing turns out to be true it will be interesting to know the term of the contract and if the Blazers or NBA have a buyout.

this has to happen. im not getting cable again after cutting the cord 10 yrs ago

Eventually (10 years +/-) we'll see the betting sites take over broadcast rights and have in game betting on a play by play basis.

"Will Dame make this free throw? Bet now!"

"Will the next possession result in Points? Foul? Turnover? Bet now!"

So the cheapest package for me in Central OR with any of the available vendors is ~85/ month.

Gotta be kidding me.

Through Sling, I had all the national channels + LP (1 team) + NBA TV for $48 while in the midwest.

Maybe Root will make a deal with Comcast to stream on their channel with the providers Root currently doesn't have?

I mean what else is Comcast going to do with their SportsNW thing?

Can't you guys just watch the play by play in the ESPN app like me? It's much less infuriating

When this garbage happened with Comcast years ago there weren’t options for me out here. So it was one big middle finger from the Blazers.

now that I finally have YTTV and was able to watch Blazers for a season. They go for a quick cash grab again. But I have options now. So when I don’t pay more to switch at least this time it’s one big middle finger from me to the Blazers.

Just continues to prove they don't give a shit about the fans.

I'm not sure this is a cash grab.

Sounds like a temporary step until something bigger.

NBA is next up for a big rights increase, and $75 billion is the price

  • Early thinking within league circles suggests the NBA will seek a $75 billion multiyear rights package, up from its current $24 billion deal, which pays $2.6 billion per year.
  • The NBA could increase that figure to $8 billion per year in its next agreement with partners Turner Sports and ESPN.

After the National Football League celebrated its history-making 11-year contract worth more than $100 billion, attention shifted to the NBA’s deal, which runs through the 2024-25 season. Early thinking within league circles suggests the NBA will seek a $75 billion rights package, up from its current $24 billion deal, which pays $2.6 billion per year.

One person familiar with sports media deals said the NBA could get $70.2 billion over nine years, using metrics including total viewer hours, which helps networks determine the value of sports league rights. The person also said tier-one sports rights are important to streaming services.

The individual asked not to be identified due to privacy concerns.

The NBA is currently partnered with AT&T-owned WarnerMedia and Disney, the latter of which agreed to pay the NFL $2.7 billion per year until 2033. Should the NBA triple its rights and replicate its nine-year deal length, it would generate around $7 billion to $8 billion per season. That puts it just behind the NFL’s new $10 billion per year average once the new agreements begin.

The NBA also has a $1.5 billion streaming deal with Chinese-based company Tencent Holdings.

“I think everyone expects that so long as the public is demonstrating through ratings that they are watching the NBA, you can probably expect increases there as well,” said former CBS Sports president Neal Pilson. “I would think the NBA is going to look for significant increases.”

The NBA has a good reason to seek more money for its rights. The league has more global appeal than the NFL and has a younger demographic, too, as Generation Z continues to support the NBA and Gen Alpha appears to continue the trend.

Though ratings declined in 2020 primarily due to pandemic factors, the NBA has seen increases throughout its current 2020-21 season. The league is attempting to create more meaningful games with its play-in tournament, which performed well last year.

On a media call last week discussing the NFL’s new rights, ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro said the network is “very pleased” with the NBA’s partnership and “how those games have performed.”

The NBA will be highly sought-after as a top-tier sports league. Fox Sports was interested in landing pro basketball before the NBA’s last deal in 2014. But Pilson said the NBA will more than likely stay with current partners once new agreements come around.

“I think the NBA will stay with the two network packages,” Pilson said. “That gives them the promotion base, and sometimes when you end up with lots of networks, people can’t find games when they’re on. College basketball is the best example — you want to see a game, and you don’t know where it is.”

Again, it’s still early, but the second most popular league on the U.S. sports landscape knows its day is coming. And as of now, the aim is $75 billion.

Said Pitaro: “The partnership with the NBA is incredibly important to us, and we’re looking forward to getting back at the table with Adam [NBA commissioner Adam Silver] and his team when the time is right.”

The NBA declined to comment due to privacy concerns about the financials of its media deals.

Just continues to prove they don't give a shit about the fans.
They used to get so much time and decent (not a ton sure) amount of money out of me. 20+ games a year from Hood River. Through some lean 21-61 type years even. But now… nah. I think I’ve been to 1 game in the last 6 or 7 years. But hey if they make it up elsewhere good on them I guess. But def a middle finger from me.

Dont forget it's a entertainment business, not just a sporting contest. If I dont like the food and/or service Ill go somewhere else. If my wife wants me to watch a movie that doesnt sound good to me, I wont watch.
People should spend their entertainment TIME and Money on things they enjoy!
