As much as I like and respect hustle players like him I don't think we should spend on him. Id rather wait until closer to the trade deadline and see about better options if we cant find something better before opening day.

^^^ i dont think we should *over* spend on him.
I agree that $4M is a lot for the guy, but we have the slot and the money. And it would piss LBJ off....and Delly's fun to watch. That could be a big factor in a potentially long and dreary season

I think you are making good points about Dellavedova. Enough to make me pause. But at the same time signing him would give us another asset that we could later trade. Assuming the contract is around 4 million per year.
That could come in handy later on.

Unless I am right and we saw his 15 minutes of great play. We pick him up for $4 mil and he sucks then we cant get rid of him. Might be our first bad contract in my opinion.

I'd love to have Delly on the team. He'd instantly be one of the leaders. Great to have on a young team because of his hard work ethic both in the game, and off the court. He's the first to turn up to training, and the last to leave. He works so hard because his effort, and intensity are the only areas he's ever going to be better than anyone else at. Dame could learn a great deal from him about defensive effort. The other reason he'd be great for a young team is that he's basically like having a coach out on the floor.

Gaels coach Randy Bennett has been Dellavedova’s biggest fan.

The coach now has to prepare for the Gaels without their star point guard.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s ... he’s like a coach on the floor,’’ Bennett said.

“I don’t think on the floor does him justice. I mean, he has set the blueprint for our program, and he’s been in it for these four years, but I think he’ll even help us win as he leaves because he’s... his leadership has been so strong.”

But what really stands out about Dellavedova are things that will never show up in a box score or on YouTube. Gonzaga coach Mark Few has called Dellavedova a "maestro" with ball screens because he is so adept at reading defenses. But he may be even better at reading his teammates. Three times a year Bennett distributes a questionnaire asking his players to rate the leadership qualities of their teammates in areas like work ethic, mental toughness, ability to unify the team and willingness to confront teammates. According to junior forward Beau Levesque, Dellavedova consistently tops every category. "He is the highest ever," says Bennett. "He has figured out that this leadership thing is really important. He understands, if I'm a little better leader, that will make us a little better team."

A few years ago Dellavedova, a psychology major and an avid reader, read an article that noted that some of the best players in the NBA, including his childhood hero, Steve Nash, were also the best at distributing fist bumps and pats on the back to teammates. Since then Dellavdova has made constant contact and positive reinforcement such a priority that Portland coach Eric Reveno has said the Gaels remind him of a women's volleyball team, touching hands even after failed plays.

"You watch us play; there's never a dead-ball or free throw situation where he doesn't get the whole team in the huddle to let us know what play we're going to run next, or to compliment somebody on something, or to tell somebody something they can do better," says Levesque. "He's always lifting the team up; he's really a coach on the floor."

Still waiting for anybody to report this as any more than speculation.

Given how much the Cavs have done to keep LeBron happy, it would be very strange for them to let go a player he went out of his way to praise in the finals.

Why does every NBA city in the league report more about what the Blazers are interested in doing than all of our Portland reporters put-together?
Because it's safer to make shit up about teams outside of your own media market?

Id give him whatever as long as the 2nd year is a team option. Paying $10M for him now doesn't make a difference, it just depends on next offseason

Now that would be nice.

umm, no, younger cheaper guys with a higher ceiling.

Agreed, but does that mean you would rather have Delly than Mo? I think that's a no brainer and I thin there are a few more Mo's out there we can get that would be better than Delly.
Who?

See above? :) Not sure at the moment, and I know we have money we need to spend, but it doesnt mean we need to spend it at this moment, and their will more than likely be someone better available via trade and cap space by the trade deadline I am thinking.

He would probably be our backup point guard/defender off the bench? I like his toughness. Not sure where his ceiling is.

I think that's exactly where he fits in, too.

He's not going to move the needle in making this an above .500 team. But he will set a great example for the young guys of getting after it. This team isn't going for next year anyway. It's going for three years down the line. But getting someone like this who might not be here when we reach the goal might turn out to be instrumental.

Why wouldn't he be here? He's only 24.

You're talking about magical players. Who exactly should we target? Does that player actually exist?

I disagree completely. There is no one next to target exactly because we currently have too many unknowns. My opinion is we need to let the season begin and let these guys show themselves for half a season and then figure out what the need exactly is. Right now, CJ is NO's back up PG and if CJ works out, then this is not a need. a Starting SG would be more important. But none of this comes to fruition until we see how they play together and against others.

We have too many "X" factors at the moment to target specifically.

Got to I say I like Dova. Whatever he doesn't have in natural ability he makes up for in all out hustle. Watching him play defense in the playoffs was akin to some old animal death struggle you used to see on Wold Kingdom.

What do you disagree with? I was asking a question.

I did forget Cleveland signed Mo Williams. Along with Kyrie, Shumpert, JR Smith likely resigning, they won't have near the opening for guard minutes next season.

I wonder if we do a declining contract starting at maybe $6 million, then ~$5.5 and ~$5.0 with those last two years being unguaranteed. It would likely cost the Cavs something crazy such as $30 million to keep Dellavedova next season when adding the luxury tax. So if they don't match we'd have him for a year and if he plays great we keep him around. If he dissapoints we cut him for the cap space next summer.

Having Pressey and Frazier doesn't exactly make us "set". I'd be surprised if both even end making the team.

It's a perfect rotation, who do you need at backup PG Chris Paul? Pressey and Frazier are both above average backup PGs in terms of potential and ability, they are currently willing to play of the bench and give you different kind of styles to choose from behind D-Lill. I don't just think we're set, I think this 3 get even more than 48 minutes-per between them and that D-Lill gets some solid minutes at SG.

Potential sure but ability (as far as NBA) you are stretching. Plus POR has already come out and said that CJ gets some PG minutes.

You just answered your own rebuttal. With CJ getting PG minutes too, we are more than set.

CJ should be starting SG. Frazier is that good, he would surprise a lot of people when he gets minutes. Pressey is also a very good effective player, I've seen a comparison to Barea maybe also mighty mouse because he's small and a good scorer. This is a very fine rotation IMO.
