Portland Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey joined Joe Becker of KGW on Sports Sunday for a brief interview.

Here's a transcript.

How excited are you?
I'm ecstatic. It's great. It was a little tough for awhile. The gym was empty after free agency and summer league. We had a great day today. We had about eight or 10 guys in here today. They got to play some full court. We've got a great coaching staff. The guys have been on the court active every day working guys out. All the young guys are excited. LaMarcus [Aldridge] did a great job, he's a real leader. He's the one who orchestrated these voluntary offseason workouts so I'm excited about him kind of taking over the locker room and being a solid voice of leadership for the young guys.
Damian Lillard
I think he's going to [have success as a rookie]. That's one of the reasons we drafted him that high. Obviously this organization has been looking for a franchise point guard for a long time. The great thing about drafting Damian was, we not only felt he was the best point guard in the draft, we felt he was the best player on the board when we selected. So it made it very easy for us.
Expectations for Victor Claver and Joel Freeland
The way I think Terry [Stotts] wants to play, the kind of culture we're trying to build here. Team basketball, trust the pass, share the basketball, trust your teammates, ball movement, player movement, playing that type of style, open and flow. The natural feel that international players have, that their first instinct is to pass is really going to lend itself well to gelling with Wes [Matthews] and LaMarcus and Nic [Batum]. When I met with Nic after we matched the offer sheet, that was one of the things he was excited about, a little more international flavor of the team. Not culturally or in terms of his peer group, but his style of play.
Expectations for Nicolas Batum
I thought he played well [in the 2012 London Olympics for France]. He struggled against Team USA a little bit early but you've got to remember he didn't go against contact until four days before the Olympics because of his contractual situation. He was basically dummy offense and drill work. It took him a little while to get a rhythm. I thought he played well, he made shots, he rebounded, he was very good defensively. I think he's going to make a big jump. I think Terry is going to be good for him. He's 23 years old. Nic's a kid. He, Eric Gordon, Roy Hibbert, a lot of the guys, that signed big contracts this summer, the level of expectations is going to increase. I think Nic's going to embrace it. It was one of the reasons we were so anxious to embrace the offer sheet. When we met with Nic prior to him signing it, that was something he really wanted. He wanted to embrace being one of the leaders on the team. Having more responsibility on both ends of the ball.
Hard to be a GM with so many second-guessing observers?
When you have an owner like Paul [Allen], it's not that hard. We'll see on October 31, I'm sure it's going to get a lot harder. We have unlimited resources here. We have a great practice facility that we're going to work on expanding and bringing in new resources there. We had the ability to go after any player that we wanted to. There's a great tradition here. So far, it's been incredible. My family is really happy here. I was lucky to inherit a really strong staff. The ability that Paul had to trust us when we wanted to hire Terry Stotts, that he was the right guy for the job. We were able to go fill out the staff we felt were good complements to our roster composition at this point.
Season open against the Los Angeles Lakers
I can't escape them apparently. Mitch Kupchak is probably the best General Manager in the NBA and he did a phenomenal job this offseason. I couldn't pick a better opponent for opening night to get people fired up. And when guys come into camp on October 4th, to start pointing to that game as the first experience for Damian Lillard, Meyers Leonard, Joel Freeland, Victor Claver and Will Barton and these guys. For a guy like LaMarcus who we think is going to be an All-Star this year, it's a great chance to play against some of the supreme talent in the league.
Brandon Roy's return with the Minnesota Timberwolves
I think everybody here wishes Brandon well. They want Brandon to do well. He's clearly a part of Trail Blazers history. He helped rebuild an organization that was in a difficult position at the time. He and LaMarcus kind of put the organization on their back. Things happened here health-wise that were out of everybody's control but at the end of the day I'm sure Brandon will get a great welcome and we're going to go out and do our best to beat them. They're a division rival and we think we have a pretty good small forward and two guard here too.

Interesting that he used the "franchise" tag with Lillard already. Team really has high expectations for him.

Don't get me wrong--I think he has franchise-level potential. But man, that's setting the bar pretty high before one game has been played.

His comment on Nic, "Having more responsibility on both ends of the ball", has me a bit concerned. Our GM thinks a basketball has ends?

Damian and Nic are possibly the only reasons why I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

Aldridge? More than anything, I'm looking forward to seeing him in his first full post-McMillan season. With Stotts, Lillard and a stockpile of power forwards masquerading as centers, this is the first time in 8 seasons that you can actually start believing the hype that we'll have a more uptempo team.

If you were to design a prototypical power forward to play in a faster tempo offense, you could do a lot worse than just going with LMA. He and McMillan were never really a great fit, but people just didn't notice because there was never anyone to compare him to (and nobody cared because Roy and McMillan were a great fit).

I'm really looking forward to how Aldridge, Batum and Lillard look in a completely rebuilt offense. And for that matter, even Matthews--he's a guy who can't create, but in a faster tempo offense I think others are going to create a lot of really wide open looks for him where he can thrive.

Damian is getting the Royal Jelly treatment.

The thing I'm most excited about is an offense with much more player and ball movement. With a healthy Brandon Roy, and a healthy Oden, a slower paced, grind it out, milk the shot clock on every possession offense might have made sense, but with this group of young, athletic guys, more movement and a faster pace will help create more open looks and easy baskets. That will help build the confidence of the young guys.

I actually think this team is going to be better than most people here think. Last year was a total disaster. Nothing fit right. The personnel didn't mesh well together, the coach and system was a poor match for the roster. Remember, it was just a couple weeks before the season started that we found out we'd lost both Brandon and Oden forever. Nate never really adjusted. Whenever the game was on the line, he always went back to the Roy ISO - only with Jamaal Crawford masquerading as Brandon Roy. The result was something like 2-11 in close games during the first half of the season. The players quit on the coach and each other. It as painful to watch.

This year the team is very young and inexperienced (at the NBA level). It will take them a while to mesh, which is why I'm glad they are getting together early for these voluntary off season workouts. But, unlike last season, I think the players will fit well together and the roster is definitely a much better match or the coach and the system he plans to run.

I think (hope) this team will surprise a lot of people. They may get off to a slow start and will struggle at times (like any young team), but I think they will compete on most nights. I'm not willing to bet money on it, but I would not be surprised to see them challenge for the 8th seed in the West. Hard to say with so many new, inexperienced guys and so much player movement in the West. My expectations may be a year too soon, but I really look forward watching Lillard and Aldridge play together, the continued improvement of Batum, the development of Leonard, Williams and Barton and how well the Euros adapt to the NBA game.

I wouldn't put too much weight into what Olshey says publically. When it came to coaching, he publically said at one time that "Kaleb was his guy"

Franchise PG today . . . trade bait tomorrow. :)

I must be dreaming. Don't wake me up.

I think Matthews benefits from this big time. And Batum. And the fans.

I know one franchise in one sport is different from another franchise in another sport, but the Blazers do bear a lot of resemblance to this year's Oakland A's. Who were expected to be in the cellar and (as of today) are in the playoffs, after a bad start.

So the A's have a bunch of tall black guys and Euro's on their team?

I'm with you. I think this team is going to surprise some people. Stotts got a very young Milwaukee team with Michael Redd and a bunch of role players to 40 wins. Look it up--their second best player was Bobby Simmons.

Aldridge is an All Star. I think Lillard is about 2-3 years away from being in an All Star game. 40 or 45 wins isn't really that unrealistic for a young team with two guys of that caliber and some decent role players.

His comment on Nic, "Having more responsibility on both ends of the ball", has me a bit concerned. Our GM thinks a basketball has ends?

Actually, some thought that Nate coached as if the ball had ends.

Too many young rotation players to expect .500, but I'm hoping Stotts can make this entertaining. We can thrill to the change in style on the court, and to individual improvement in young players. Stotts was head coach in bad situations, so we'll see what he does on the trifecta. Before that as a Sonic assistant coach, he was invisible, and I was surprised he got head coach jobs.

If he gets us to .500, I'll be hot for Stotts. Great Scott!

I predict a more uptempo fun to watch brand of basketball and 30-36 wins and the # 6 pick in the draft next season.

I swore Charlotte was going to swoop him up right away!

I would think many bad teams wouldn't be that interested in him. His brand of slow ball may be effective, but it doesn't put fans in the seats on a team lacking talent.

He's very good at developing young players though.

He's very good at developing young players though.

That's his rep. Is he really though? Would Roy, Batum and Aldridge be drastically worse players with different coaches? What kind of a job did he do developing Randolph?

I've argued before that he's pretty good at getting the most out of guys with limited talent. Blake, Przybilla, Outlaw, Jack, Webster, Khryapa...I'm sure there are others. Lots of examples of youngish scrub/role player guys who have some of their best years under Nate. His low possession slow pace style probably makes it easier for less gifted people to avoid mistakes that cost wins.

But is he a coach who helps create/improve featured players? If he'd been coaching the Thunder the past 4 years would they be any better than they are now?

I don't know. It's interesting to think about....

He's accustomed to Paul Allen wages. He started at $5M per year and ended at 7 or 8. Charlotte's the cheapest team and he and they didn't talk very long.

He has a big adjustment to make in pay expectation, which will keep him unemployed.

This article makes me :-)

Had we had more ball/player movement we would of beat the Mavs in 11'

Yup. He's probably gonna wait until his current contract ends after this season, and he stops getting paid before looking for other jobs.
