Parents of transgender first-grader file discrimination complaint

(CNN) -- A transgender rights group announced Wednesday that it has filed a discrimination complaint in Colorado on behalf of a first-grader who was born a boy but identifies as a girl.

The filing stems from a decision announced last December by officials at Fountain-Fort Carson School District that Coy Mathis could no longer use the girls' bathroom at Eagleside Elementary.

Mother Kathryn Mathis said she and her husband were shocked.

"We were very confused because everything was going so well, and they had been so accepting, and all of a sudden it changed and it was very confusing and very upsetting because we knew that, by doing that, she was going to go back to being unhappy," she told CNN. "It was going to set her up for a lot of bad things."

Coy was born with male sex organs but has identified as female since she could express herself, her mother said. The child had attended classes during her kindergarten year with no problems and no complaints from anyone at the school, Mathis told reporters at the Colorado Capitol in Denver, where she was flanked by her husband, Jeremy, and four other children.

I don't know how I feel about this. I understand that this nation is moving towards a very accepting lifestyle change; but I think allowing an 6 year old boy to go to a girl's bathroom doesn't sit well with me. I understand that many believe lifestyle, like transgender is considered genetic, but they still have male organs and I think it would confuse them more if they saw that their junk is much different than girls.

Also, what about high school, when the boy now is mature and so are the girls? Does he get to shower in the girl locker room too?

I think its weird and I would be weirded out by it. I wouldn't really oppose the person in question being there, but I'd naturally be weirded out by it.

Like it or not, school isn't just about this person. It's about how they fit into the group. They may want to use the girls' bathroom, but how does it make other girls feel?

The solution is simple: just have them use a private bathroom I'm sure is at the school.

I get the larger argument: your psychology may not match your biology. However, it's not up to the school or the community to adjust to that condition, rather the individual. I feel sorry for this kid, but as a wise philosopher once said, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.

IMO, until you are biologically a gender, you should continue using whatever bathroom facilities that you are biologically. You shouldn't be able to choose based on a whim.

I hate that the entire school, and all of it's teachers and students are forced to accept something because of one person. Like schools no longer being allowed to say the National Anthem before class, or unable to have the word Christmas in school because it has the word Christ in it.

I feel bad for the young child, but I agree with Maxie on this. It should not be up to the school to conform, or the kids in it. It should be up to the family and child that identifies as a girl.

really tough situation, but the school shouldn't be in any trouble for protecting the other students.

So if my son wears a dress to school and says he is a girl now, should the school let him shower with the girls after gym?

or now you will all call me captain because I identify with captain Kirk, and I am a starship captain?

What, exactly, are they being "protected" from?

So if my son wears a dress to school and says he is a girl now, should the school let him shower with the girls after gym?

So you're assuming this is just some whim on the part of the kid? And you know this because?

or now you will all call me captain because I identify with captain Kirk, and I am a starship captain?

Sure, why not? What's the harm?

I agree. Its okay to make the entire school uncomfortable because one child thinks he's a girl? I think this will open a huge can of worms if these parents win a lawsuit. I can see many parents suing schools for their 16 year old she/boy wanting to take showers with the gender he is more comfortable being.

1. Why?
2. What part of your biology determines your gender? Have you heard of AIS, and other intersex conditions? Do they have to have separate bathrooms? Or what about people who are transitioning - do they have to have undergone full surgery to meet your important and not-at-all whimsical standards?

You shouldn't be able to choose based on a whim.

I don't see why not, but even if I did, that's a total red herring because the original case has nothing to do with "whims".

Maybe the other girls that are uncomfortable taking a piss with a boy gendered kid?

Where to start.

1. Perhaps you were unaware, but they don't have to share stalls.
2. "Boy gendered kid" begs the question.
3. Since when has "discomfort" come into it? Do racist kids get their own racially pure bathrooms?

Then make a "transgender" bathroom then.

Your sex organs. You can bring up statistical outliers for everything under the sun. But if you have a penis, go to the boys room. Vagina, go to the girls room. Its not that fucking hard. If you're a hermaphrodite, you can go to the bathroom in the teachers lounge.

If you "identify" as a girl yet there's nothing to back it up except "because I said so". Then yes, it is on a whim.

Its easy for a man to see there being no problem with taking a piss with the opposite sex; but females are a bit more timid.

As for your racial discomfort. Well, I don't see how this relates. A boy with a penis being in the same bathroom with girls is much different than taking a piss with a girl of different color. Sorry, that strawman doesn't work.

How nice of you to speak for all "females".

So it's a special kind of discomfort. The girls' magical "penis sense" will be going off as the kid sits urinating in the stall next door.

Are we going to bring "separate but equal" into this arena too? If I decide that I like the girls bathrooms better--not because I "identify as female", but simply because they're cleaner and smell nicer--am I being discriminated against on the basis of gender? Are separate boys/girls bathrooms a violation of the equal protection clause?

What's that got to do with urination or defecation? What are you worried will happen?

Chaos.

we have boys and girls rooms for a reason. Girls don't want dudes pissing on the toilet seat. they will feel uncomfortable if a guy is in there while they are taking a dump or whatever.

Just because someone says they are a girl, yet has a penis and everything biologically similar to a boy doesn't mean you can use the girls room. Its weird and uncomfortable.

If the girls bathrooms are cleaner and smell nicer, then maybe you are.

I'm still trying to work out what everyone's afraid of. What's the big deal?

Pot calling kettle black?

If you don't think the girls or the entire school doesn't know that this boy wants to be a girl, then you are extremely naive.

If there is ever a place to teach understanding and acceptance, it is in an educational atmosphere. If this makes kids uncomfortable, well imagine how they will feel in the real world. Time to learn about this topic and proper ways of dealing with it.

Heck, getting to school on time, homework and certain teachers makes kids uncomfortable . . . is the goal of school to teach or make kids feel comfortable. I say take kids out of their comfort zone and make them deal with situations that are uncomfortable so they will be prepared for it in the real world . . . wait I think I'm having a flashback to my high school basketball coach speeches . . .

By the same token, what's the big deal for this kid? It's just a bathroom, right? Why does the child care so much which one is used?

The fabric of society will collapse.

By the way, were you aware that unisex bathrooms already exist! No wonder society's going down the tubes.

we have boys and girls rooms for a reason.

Do tell.

Girls don't want dudes pissing on the toilet seat. they will feel uncomfortable if a guy is in there while they are taking a dump or whatever.

That's the reason? Wow. Well clearly that's important enough to trump EVERYTHING. (Does the fact that I don't want dudes pissing on the toilet seat either make me a girl? I always worried about that.)

Just because someone says they are a girl, yet has a penis and everything biologically similar to a boy doesn't mean you can use the girls room. Its weird and uncomfortable.

Again, wow. What a sensitive flower you are.
