We got this guy because if Andre or Bayless go down - we are going to have to figure out how Mills does as a backup PG - and while it might work, there is a good chance it might not. He is insurance, cheap insurance, but cheap insurance is better than no insurance.

I am sure that if there was a better Center insurance available - the Blazers would have gone that way - but, generally speaking - that's why they got him.

And what happens if it doesn't? The same thing as before. We go to the playoffs and lose, and or get a 1 in a bazillion chance at a lotto pick. It's not like we are vying for a championship this year.

If Andre goes down, Batum or Rudy could step in a pinch anyhow. I know for a fact Batum can play point. He did it this summer very well.

I guess you do not think that experience for such a young team (or at least, young core) is worth it, even if they lose in the first round, and I guess the Blazers brain trust disagrees with you.

What's the downside of acquiring Diener? He's a cheap, playable vet. It's better than an open roster spot.

Well, we were getting pretty short on white players, so this helps.

Not at all. What if tomorrow Cleveland waives LeBron? We'd want to pick him up, but since KP loves all his players, he'd never consider cutting his old buddy Diener, and so we miss out on LeBron. This signing just cost us a bunch of championships. Damn you, kpee!

Does not matter, he would not be able to play in the playoffs if he is waived tomorrow.

Better a bird in the hand than a LeBron on the tree, I say.

Would we? Does he play Nate's style of ball? Would Roy feel comfortable playing alongside him? Would LeBron be cool with strengthening the team's second unit, or would he bolt in free agency?

Your analysis needs to go a bit deeper.

White Chocolate baby!

Will he be cleared waivers for Wednesdays game against the Pacers?

Given that they haven't signed him yet, it seems doubtful that he'd be in uniform by tomorrow. Kind of odd that we've heard nothing official from the Blazers on this. I wonder if they're still looking at their options.

Still no official word that we have in fact signed this guy. I'm gonna laugh my ass off if it doesnt happen and it blows up in Quick's face.

I don't know what I was thinking when I posted my last comment on this. Diener was waived on Monday and it takes 48 hours to clear waivers. The earliest the Blazers could sign him would be today.

It's official:

www.trailblazers.com

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers have signed free agent guard Travis Diener, it was announced today by General Manager Kevin Pritchard.

“We're very happy to have Travis on our roster,” said Pritchard. “He is a veteran point guard who will be a good complement to our existing backcourt.”

Diener (6-1, 175) holds career averages of 4.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 15.1 minutes in 174 games (21 starts) during his five NBA seasons with Orlando and Indiana.

The 28-year-old Diener played in four games for Indiana during the 2009-10 season, averaging 0.8 points, 0.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 6.3 minutes. He underwent surgery to repair an injury to his left big toe on Nov. 20.

After playing his first two NBA seasons in Orlando, Diener posted career highs of 6.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 20.5 minutes in 2007-08, his first of three seasons with Indiana.

A three-time All-Conference USA selection at Marquette University, Diener was selected by the Orlando Magic with the 38th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Diener becomes the 15th player on Portland’s roster and will wear No. 27.

Nice.

Dude was a decent PG @ Marquette, and was somewhat serviceable in Indy. I like it as insurance.

Sounds like a great guy. Doesn't look weird like Blake either.

I agree. What is wrong with getting him? We don't really need another big now. No thanks to Kenny Thomas. With Diener and Mills, I would do this trade next year.

Rudy, Jerryd and Martell for Ryan Gomes, Corey Brewer and a pick.

Miller - Diener - Mills
Roy - Brewer
Batum - Gomes - Cunningham
Aldridge - Pendergraph - Howard
Oden - Przybilla - Camby

That team looks like a contender.

What # is he going to wear!?! I need to order my Diener jersey!!!!

I figured it out. Diener = Dan Dickau version 2.0 :devilwink:

White Chocolate baby!

That one's taken.

I'm going with.......................................................

VANILLA!!!!!
