I've let my Athletic subscription expire - anyone care to summarize?

Typical Quick background piece, points of interest for me: He is close to his older brother older went through a pretty similar draft night going unpicked. Nets wanted him at 58, with contingencies, but his brother warned him off. Dropped weight after summer league after feedback from Chauncy. Good piece overall.

isn't it funny how Olshey's name is completely absent from the article? it's like he's being completely whitewashed. There was a whole section on how Chauncey's very first call as a head coach was to Watford, but nothing at all about Neil.

Props to those who saw something in Watford early. Question for those who watch games on the regular: do you have any hopes Watford can turn into a Draymond kind of player? I know you can’t teach intangibles, which is essentially what makes Draymond a “star”. But Trendon is actually 2-3 inches taller with 1.25 inches longer wingspan. Was Draymond any faster at 21 than Watford is right now? He’s picking up on NBA defense rather quick and seems to have gotten more confident scoring around the basket. He certainly seems like we will be a more efficient scorer inside than Draymond ever has.

Draymond had one of the highest Bball IQ’s in the game. Everyone who plays with him say the same thing. While Watford is a good Bball player I’ll hold judgement comparing him to level of Draymond.

Oh don’t get me wrong, not trying to say Watford is going to ever be like Draymond by any means. I’m just saying that it’s good to even find guys that can flash similar skills from two-way contracts.

nah, Draymond is one of one. If you wanna compare Watford to someone a little more realistic I’d say Nance. They’re the same size and play the same way. Nance is more athletic but that’s mainly just on paper nowadays, he doesn’t really play above the rim, and hasn’t since he was a Laker.

Has anyone seen any sort of time line or update on Trendon? I thought it sounded like he would not be out long, but there just doesn't seem to be anything out there on his recovery or a timeline?

What happened to Watford? He's incredibly fast moving with the ball this season. If the defense isn't paying attention he can get to the hoop in a flash.

I like it ! Such a Smart player too. Needs to cut down on the TOs a bit and he'll be a very solid player

Seeing Trenton on the summer league champs he had a great two man game with our guards. He could overpower smaller defenders or go around slower footed bigs. Some of that is translating to the real games. He's a great option on the bench.

I struggle to think of a comparison for Trendon. Maybe Justise Winslow?

They definitely are similar.
Watford finishes at the hoop much better than Winslow. You never know what you're going to get from Winslow shooting-wise.
Last season Watford had the floater that seemed to be pretty consistent.
I don't think Watford can elevate to block shots like Winslow, but they both know how to get in front of the guy with the ball (eubanks too) and disrupt the flow.

I was wondering if Watford would make any difference coming back to the team. Didn't seem to need him that much. He can't shoot from outside.
The answer is definitely "yes" , especially with puppet master Billups running the show and players randomly being injured or being held out of games.

Is one of the Blazers' strengths our versatility? We have a LOT of players who can handle the ball and play solid defense.

Absolutely, having forwards who can handle the ball is huge. Teams will continue to trap Dame and Ant, having multiple ball handlers at other positions can only help. Love that guys like Watford, Winslow, and Hart are relentless at pushing the ball up the court. Yes, the turnover numbers will be higher, but we are seeing a lot more easy shots.

Relentless and dependable.

He can't shoot from the outside.....yet. Even though he was only 4-16 in the summer league, his shooting form from deep looked pretty good. I would be surprised if he didn't become a decent 3pt shooter by next year.

Trendon can shoot, and is much bigger, no I wouldn't compare them.

Good question though, I'm not sure. Reminds me a bit of some roles Shawn Marion played for Dallas; but obviously Marion was more athletic and as an all star just on a much higher level.

Has some Gerald Wallace in his game; but again not as athletic.

Sticking with Blazers; maybe 36 year old Juwan Howard?

Or Stacey Augmon (although Augmon was more a guard than center)

Detlef Schrempf?

Rubean Patterson similarly had some versatility but was a way worse shooter; although probably quicker to guard smaller players.

Jerome Kersey might have some similarity; he would probably play a bigger position in today's NBA.

Overall just shows Trendon is a unique type of player.

I like Watford. I think he could be an important piece for us.
He has that Josh Hart "dawg" in him...if he gets his 3 pt shot percentage up, he'll earn minutes. He's not the "go to" guy in the 4th qtr though...and tanking he had to do that ...he's also not a center. Like to see him get his rebounding up as well. Affordable swiss army knife guy coming off the bench is good to have.

Glad to see him working on his outside shot. If he can become consistent out there, it will open his driving and floater game a lot.

Nice to see him working on it and that they recorded only the makes. Would like to see his wind up/release get a little quicker. Currently, that is allowing a defender to close a lot of space to challenge the shot.

His rebounding numbers would go up, if he wasn't always so worried about boxing out. Sometimes he seems so intend on boxing out he missed the board. Hopefully that improves with age. I think he can be a good bench player.

It is a slow release but I care more about his percentage from 3. He won't be a high-volume 3 pt shooter. He will take them when he is wide open and if he is guarded by a PF and they rush out to block it, he has the handles to drive right past them. So as long as his release helps with his accuracy...keep it. Love his floater

really small sample sizes but last season, Watford shot 60.2% on two's, (which was 2nd on the team-rotation players, behind Eubanks), and 39.1% on three's (2nd on team behind Grant). Even with the advisement about sample size, that's still pretty encouraging. And, with a 12% rebound rate and a 16% assist rate he demonstrated decent offensive versatility. And, he's still 22 on a real bargain contract
