Event Trent Jr and Simons to the G-League Baldwin Recalled

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

Evidently (according to Holdahl) both will be back with the team this week. The plan was just a temporary stint. The Blazers didn’t hold any practices because of their busy schedule so those two went down to the g league to get playing time. Will be interesting to see what happens at the deadline. I hope they stick around, but they could also represent value in a trade. Both had successful stints down there.

What a surprise, local media a step behind.

Trent and Simons are both still with their respective teams.

Trent’s game just ended.

37 points
13-28 (6-13 from deep)
5 rebounds
3 assists
1 steal

Dude is ballin’

They decided to keep them down there to keep building trade value! Trent is doing his part.

Simons struggled again. 10 points on 3-12 shooting with 5 turnovers. Even the g league is a big step up from where he was last year so it’s not totally surprising. But yeah, he’s years away. Trent is physically ready for the league now. I’m starting to wonder if Trent is going to be another one of those big school guys that got overlooked because of all the talent he was surrounded by. It’s the g league yes, but he looks like an alpha dog. I can see why Olshey considered picking him in the first.

I think he's a year away from contributing, but Trent is a regular rotation guy next year (assuming they don't trade him).

I still feel Simons has a higher ceiling, but that's not a guarantee. Trent could well end up being the better player.

That’s a whole lotta words for a whole lotta nothing.

Not hating. You’ve mastered what I do.

Wes Matthews anyone?
Wes had terrible handles and a chest high dribble....couldn't finish a layup or fast break too often...prototypical Bruce Bowen 3 and D guy...but Wes was an elite defender...he's not quite that today

Has a long way to go to be Wes defensively. Also think Wes was a better all around athlete.

Gary is definitely the better shooter at the same age and more comfortable creating in the mid range though.

You think Wes in his prime was a better athlete? Trent tested really well in the shuttle and both verts, I just don’t think he leans on his athleticism as much. Matthews never struck me as a great athlete.

I think Wes was a little quicker in his movements, better at tracking guys defensively and a better lateral athlete.

I'm sure you can attribute some of that to just playing with a higher IQ and with more intensity though. We'll see if Gary gets there. And I think he'll need to if he wants to be an impactful player. Doesn't bring enough outside of shooting offensively to get away with being a low IQ / apathetic defender imo.

Way too soon for for that assessment. Wes played 4 years in college. Trent played 1.

Here's a full game of freshman Wes for context. Dude was a killer defender even back then.

Not sure Gary ever gets here as far as being an effort, little things, intensity type of guy Wes was/is. And I'm not saying he needs to be to make it...Wes was truly special in this regard.

I wrote it in a manner that IF one of the two of them blows up or is a bust, I won't be tied down to one declaration or the other. Ambiguity rules!

Solid stroke as a spot up guy. He may have more athleticism but doesn't use it to create shots. He is shooting over very limited defenders in most cases and many of those shots he wouldn't get in an NBA game. Can he create more of those on his own? Who know.....but nice to see him getting some confidence down there at the G and producing. Just not seeing much explosion. Not to the level of Biggie by far but still pretty grounded. If he can learn to use his body to create space, then fine.

I think E'Twaun Moore is an apt comparison. They're like the same size.

He already does. And he knows how to create space, he just does it in a subtle way. Just check out the first play from yesterday’s highlight video. Hes also good at creating space at the rim using his body. He’s already got NBA strength. Just wait until his man strength kicks in. He’s going to be a bully.

I also like that he came in with a rep. as a bad defender (which, presumably, is why he went late in the draft), but that hasn't been the case in the NBA.

Trent? He has played 33 minutes total in the NBA in 7 games, all of which were in garbage time. How do you know either way if he's a good defender or otherwise from that sample size?

Because I'm also looking at SL, GLeague.

On offense he reminds me of another 2nd round pick Neil selected...... Allen Crabbe. I think he can be better than AC on defense.

lol dude you explicitly said in your post "in the NBA."

People getting too combative here.
You have to be IN THE NBA to be in these things...

Regardless, I don't really care about what "in the NBA" means. All I meant was it's all the data we have, and his defense has been much better than we were led to believe.
