I can't speak for dviss, but my own take on this is that telling anyone, but especially a black person, to "settle down" about the type of racism that's infested our society for centuries and is still extremely pernicious is condescending and absolutely an example of white privilege, because white people have the luxury of "taking a breath and cooling off" since it doesn't affect them. That's classic white privilege--you have the privilege to not care and tell other people to calm down. That's not a luxury everyone has.

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding

We have a winner!

I LOVE when people just get it... Why is this so hard? It's been 450 years people.

Its one thing for @dviss1 to call his own ass black, but another for a white dude to reference a black man by his black ass

I'm an old white dude so I'm probably too entrenched in my whiteness to really have a handle on things....

but one very large component of what I view as racism is white people unwilling to grant black people the space to express their anger. I mean, if you're a black person thinking about 240 years of slavery in this country; the three-fifths clause in the Constitution; then reconstruction; then Jim Crow & lynchings; the long battle for civil rights that's still not won and seems further away then it was 4 years ago....well, you're going to be pissed off. And you probably would anyway as likely nearly every day you have aggressions, big & small, overt & subtle, of racism, bigotry, and bias directed at you and yours

who the hell wouldn't be angry about that?

yet, all the time I see white people getting outraged about back anger and determination. White people, don't fucking personalize it. Grant black people that justified and necessary space. It's the least you can do, and if you can, you should try and do more

Real speak, we need our allies to be accomplices. One of the best things you can do for us is amplify a melanated voice.

Sorry but Dviss doesn't have carte-blanche to act like an asshole to everyone he feels slighted him. Taking a breath on a fucking message board doesn't mean you need to be less pissed off about the circumstance. I get he's angry, he can still act like a fucking grownup. Let me guess that comment is somehow white privilege too.

Despite the fact my skin color might surprise you...

I meant your reasoning behind saying both Dems and Republicans have executed prisoners over time
what I meant was throughout history in this country both parties have sent people to their death for crimes. Nothing more, I wasn't covering for republicans or dems like it was implied incorrectly.

Being an asshole isn't against the rules so... Yeah I can... STFU telling me how to respond. And newsflash, you don't know me. Ask anyone who knows me from this forum personally about me. To know me is to love me and if you don't then something is wrong with you and that's a fact. And yes, your post reeks of privilege but it mainly reeks of white fragility. Look inward when you try to figure that out.

You still don't get it. First off there has not been prison reform. Understand this clearly. Secondly the topic was about a black man being killed in the lame duck a four-year lame duck president. This same lame duck is going to be executing the first woman in decades. Within the last 20 years conservatives have been responsible for the vast majority of executions in this country. Yet for some reason you want to deflect against that. And then you act stupid when you say you don't understand why. It's how conservatives typically operate. With zero logic whatsoever. There's only one reason why you would have brought up Democrats in that situation when Democrats have been historically against capital punishment for at least the last 20 years.

I'm melanated too, my man.

I think he is acting like a grownup. Grownups in the 1960s did and said a lot of the things that dviss has said and done. dviss walks the walk by taking part in peaceful protests and giving talks. Calling expressed anger "not acting like a grownup" is absolutely condescending, when that anger is perfectly justified.

And yes, your post still has all the markers of white privilege. You're right that I have no idea what color your skin actually is, but your sentiments sound exactly like the types of things unaware white people say. Non-white people sometimes echo the same sentiments and they're just as unaware no matter your skin tone.

You dont get it, go back and read my original statement that wasn't even directed at you. I wasn't singling out dems as you say I was. And please dont refer to my post as stupid.

I see, but none of his posts are in anyway condescending? The anger at that poster was not justified. But he's right, I shouldn't tell him how to act, I can only suggest to act like a decent human being.

What a load of bullshit. Whatever, carry on, I shouldn't have even gotten involved.

Your post was stupid, unnecessary, and factually obsolete.

You don't speak kindly to the people that unwittingly work to keep this racist system in place. :dunno:

These are some of the same people that have been saying "Fuck your feelings" the past 4 years.

I think what you're not understanding and is causing all this static is that your comment diminishes and waters down the current event. It's like reacting to a horrible murder with "Yeah, well, lots of people have been killed over the years." That's technically true, but practically useless, information. So sure, both parties have contributed to executions but how is that important right now? That doesn't bear on this at all, it gives off a sense of "Everyone does this, let's move on."

It's also subtly misleading because it implicitly equates the two parties when Democrats have traditionally been a lot less focused on executions and, as someone else showed in a chart, today Democrats are far less supportive of execution than Republicans.

I don't believe you intended to put across these sentiments, but that's how your post came across to a lot of people. Whether that matters to you is up to you, but I thought I'd let you know because you seemed confused by the push-back.

Totally agree, just didn't think the poster was doing that. Believe it or not I generally like your posts, just seemed over the top this time. Again, shouldn't have gotten involved.

You still don't get it. Picking up your toys and leaving the argument about racism...

Is SPECIFICALLY a privilege enjoyed by white people.

As tired as I am of speaking about this, I simply don't have the luxury...

If you think that anger at someone who was trying to be provocative about what sure seems like a racially-motivated execution by our President was "not justified" then I don't think you're very good at judging these things, which is a reason why you should stay out of the judging game, yeah.

This was my thought on the post as well. Couldn't have said it better.

Im not sure why you are so judgmental and come across like a know it all, easily, with people. I understand and support what you are standing for but to act like jerk in your no hold barred manor is outright disrespectful, I never attacked you or your comments. I have friends of all races including many black friends, that also stand up for equality and respect in powerful ways, but they dont have to use ridicule and anger to get their points across and we have a brotherhood thats fantastic. We have have earned each others respect. You've lost mine.
