Trump just announced he will not repeal Obamacare

After meeting with President Barack Obama, President-elect Donald Trump appears to have reversed his position on repealing Obamacare.

One of the President-elect’s biggest promises on the campaign trail was his vow to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, particularly in the wake of health insurance providers pledging to raise the price of coverage by double digits in coming years. However, it appears the outgoing president has convinced Trump to keep his signature legislation. As of this writing, Trump has only said he would amend it, and that repealing the law outright may not be his plan going forward.

The position is a shocker to many, particularly Congressional Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan. McConnell has said repealing Obamacare is “pretty high” on his list of priorities for the next four years, and Ryan is asking Trump to allow him to privatize Medicare and gut Obamacare, according to Salon.

The UK-based Independent reported that President-elect Trump and President Obama discussed some of the ongoing difficulties the country faces, but also reflected on the highlights of the past 8 years, which has been interpreted as praise for the Affordable Care Act. The healthcare law, which has allowed over 20 million Americans to have access to health insurance since 2010, is proving popular in the wake of the election, with over 100,000 Americans signing up for Affordable Care Act plans on healthcare.gov in the past 48 hours.

Americans have until January 31, 2017 to enroll in or change existing health coverage for the 2017 calendar year.

Then he's going against Paul Ryan and GOP, eh? That'll be interesting seeing how that plays out.

I hadn't read that article, but another I read earlier talked about Trump "maintaining some" of the parts of the ACA instead of repealing in toto. It seemed in that one that much of it is still on the chopping block.

They'll be able to kill lots of it through reconciliation.

Trump is sending Obamacare to a death panel.

Yeah...

Trump likes main Obamacare provisions 'very much'

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he is open to leaving intact key parts of President Barack Obama's healthcare bill.

Mr Trump, who has pledged to repeal the 2010 law, said he will keep the ban on insurers denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

He told the Wall Street Journal that he also favoured allowing young adults to be insured on their parents' policies.

"I like those very much," Mr Trump said of the two pillars of the bill.

It was a meeting he had with Mr Obama on Thursday that made him reconsider his calls for an all-out replacement of the Affordable Care Act, he told the newspaper.

In a separate interview with CBS, Mr Trump said the parts of Mr Obama's healthcare bill he was "going to try to keep" were "the strongest assets".

He said that while the bill would be repealed and replaced, the changes would provide Americans with "great healthcare for much less money".

He made the statement during an interview with the 60 Minutes programme, which is due to air on Sunday.

Trump Suggests ‘Amending’ Obamacare Could Be An Alternative To Repealing It

President-elect Donald Trump gave his first extended comments on Obamacare Friday, suggesting he may be rethinking the wisdom of taking a sledgehammer to the law, as he has promised to do. But it’s not clear whether Trump meant to signal a shift in his position, or whether he was simply speaking off the cuff.

In his first interview since winning the presidential election, Trump told The Wall Street Journal he was still committed to moving quickly to deal with the Affordable Care Act ― a program, he said, that is offering coverage so expensive that “you can’t use it.”

But Trump also mentioned that he would look at parts of the law that seemed to be worthwhile, including protections for people with pre-existing conditions who previously had no access to insurance. One reason, he said, was that President Barack Obama urged Trump to think about those provisions when the two met on Thursday. “I told him I will look at his suggestions, and out of respect, I will do that,” Trump said.

By itself, that pledge doesn’t signify much. Repeal advocates always talk about keeping provisions like the pre-existing condition guarantee ― which is highly popular, although difficult to make work without some other elements of the law in place.

In addition, Trump’s specific commitments on health care policy, like his commitments on all policies, have been inconsistent and sometimes contradictory. They are difficult to take seriously.

But Trump said one other intriguing thing about the law. He vowed that “either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced.”

Note the key word: “amended.” That could have a little more significance.

From his campaign speeches, he liked a few things about it, pre existing conditions coverage and parent plan till 26. It would probably be suicide to take away the pre existing bit, even for him.

If I had to guess, he probably won't change it much on the surface, he's just gonna make some people pay more for it. Very poor people won't be affected, but the inevitable expanded Medicaid cuts will make it harder to qualify for the cheap or free version. Upper middle class people are going to get tax breaks and health savings accounts, but pay more out of pocket. The trick is figuring out what to do with the people who are too poor to do that, but make too much to qualify for the discount. Basically the 20 million people who have insurance now, that didn't 8 years ago.

I would love to see him figure it out. Unfortunately the heritage foundation and the Paul Ryan types are going to push him to strip federal money from it, they need the money for bombs. (had to get one dig in, happy Veterans Day!)

How weird would it be if he didn't repeal it though, and just changed it a little, maybe more progressive, for the better even? Would his voters be angry? He should just do that.

The Trail Blazers have now defeated the Kings in seven straight meetings, their second-longest active streak against any team (Lakers, 8).

Which is FUCKED UP Because it was written by the Heritage Foundation. Mandate and all. It's a Republican plan through and through. It was Bob Dole's response to Hillarycare. Which is why these conservatives should be ASHAMED for calling it a "government takeover of healthcare".

He was so excited he posted it here.

Obama care is a shit pile, but I DID like very few aspects of it. SO if he fixes it, and keeps the semi-good things from it, I am OK with that. I am sure he is trying to compromise a bit beings that half the fucking nation hates his guts.

Mandating that someone has to pay an insurance company is a government takeover of healthcare, whether Dole or Ryan or Reagan or Lincoln said it. Nothing about health care became more affordable. It just that the American populace picked up the bill for those that insurance companies deemed too expensive to make money back on.
MRIs are still $2k or more. Pills are still expensive. People are being charged $50 for an emergency room band-aid. Etc. I'm ok with a wholesale reform of this.

Trump will one by one accept all the work in progress in the oval office....if he doesn't, he'll have to work on another plan and he doesn't really want to work

The government mandates that you buy car insurance.

Is car insurance a government takeover?

I'm thinking that we need serious tort reform and to put big pharmaceutical companies in their place for price hiking drugs that cost the tiniest fraction of the cost they charge for them...that's where I'd begin with healthcare reform....I've had no problems with Oregon Fair Health plan....so far it's been affordable and worked for my family
