Donald Trump Is Using False Statistics to Make A Racist Point
He tweeted a photo with completely made up statistics about black crime.
At this point, it should come as no surprise when Donald Trump manipulates the truth to his political advantage. However, presenting false racially-biased statistics a day after an African-American protester was thrown out of one of his events, doesn’t send the best message.
Earlier on Sunday afternoon, Trump did his weird version of a manual retweet of an image depicting a man (in this context, assumed to be black), with a bandana over his face pointing a gun sideways towards a list of wholly fabricated statistics.
The image alleges that 97 percent of African-Americans were killed by African Americans, while only 1 percent of murdered African-Americans were killed by police. These two statistics are demarcated from the rest in blue and red ink respectively. It also claims 81 percent of whites who are killed are killed by blacks, which is pure race-baiting at its most ignorant. The numbers in this erroneous image are attributed to the “Crime Statistics Bureau - San Francisco,” and reflect 2015 data.
For one thing, a “Crime Statistics Bureau” does not exist. The FBI is responsible for this data and they have yet to release a report on 2015, because, well 2015 is not over yet.
Secondly, whoever made that image did so with the intent of lying about the percentage of white Americans killed by black Americans. In 2014, that number was 14 percent, not 81 percent.
Additionally, in the graphic, only 16 percent of whites are killed by other whites. In the same FBI report, it clearly states that 82.3 percent of whites are in fact killed by other whites, which is very similar to the number of blacks killed by blacks (89.9 percent).
Finally, when the Daily Beast reverse google image searched the picture, the only yielded results were attributed to YouTube videos in Arabic, which featured a duplicated image of the man in the picture Trump shared.

Fact-checking Trump's claim that thousands in New Jersey cheered when World Trade Center tumbled
Urban myth
We conducted an exhaustive search of newspaper and television transcripts on LexisNexis, looking for reports from September 2001 through December 2001 that made any mention of Muslims in New Jersey celebrating the 9/11 attacks.
Regarding Jersey City, which Trump mentioned specifically, we found two uncorroborated and unsourced mentions. Neither begins to approach the scale Trump described.
The Associated Press, on Sept. 17, 2001, described "rumors of rooftop celebrations of the attack by Muslims" in Jersey City. But the same report said those rumors were "unfounded."
The Washington Post, on Sept. 18, 2001, published an article that claimed "law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river." The Post story includes no source for this information, and we found no evidence that any of these allegations ever stuck.
A more rampant rumor of Muslim or Arab-Americans cheering the attacks centered around nearby Paterson, N.J. But that turned out to be just a rumor, spawned by chain emails and perpetuated by shock jock Howard Stern’s radio show.
The Star-Ledger reported that as the rumors spread, "Paterson police rushed to South Main Street, the center of the city's Middle Eastern community."
"When we got there, they were all in prayer," Paterson Police Chief Lawrence Spagnola said.
Three percent of New Jersey residents are Muslim -- the highest of any state -- according to Pew Research Center. Suspected 9/11 terrorists had ties to Jersey City and Paterson. But there is no conclusive evidence that any New Jersey residents celebrated the attacks, and there is no evidence whatsoever of any demonstrations where "thousands and thousands of people" cheered.
Nor is there any evidence Trump saw these events play out in any way, be it on TV or in person. We reached out to Trump’s campaign but didn’t hear back.
What we did find are many stories of Muslims living in New Jersey speaking out against the attacks and bracing themselves for anti-Muslim backlash. For example, Paterson residents put up a banner on the city’s main street that said "The Muslim Community Does Not Support Terrorism.''
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop responded to Trump’s statement on Twitter, saying Trump "has memory issues or willfully distorts the truth."
Our ruling
Trump said he "watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people were cheering" as the World Trade Center collapsed.
This defies basic logic. If thousands and thousands of people were celebrating the 9/11 attacks on American soil, many people beyond Trump would remember it. And in the 21st century, there would be video or visual evidence.
Instead, all we found were a couple of news articles that described rumors of celebrations that were either debunked or unproven.
Trump’s recollection of events in New Jersey in the hours after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks flies in the face of all the evidence we could find. We rate this statement Pants on Fire.

WASHINGTON POST’S FACT CHECKER DOESN’T READ THE WASHINGTON POST
I wrote earlier today about the liberal media attacking Donald Trump’s statement that on 9/11, “thousands and thousands” of American Muslims in Jersey City celebrated the successful terrorist attacks. Another Democrat who got into the act was the Washington Post’s fact checker, Glenn Kessler. He addressed Trump’s claim here, and, calling it “outrageous,” awarded it four Pinocchios.
Kessler wrote:
Trump says that he saw this with his own eyes on television and that it was well covered. But an extensive examination of news clips from that period turns up nothing. There were some reports of celebrations overseas, in Muslim countries, but nothing that we can find involving the Arab populations of New Jersey.
Emphasis added. This assertion is astonishing, because it means that Kessler is ignorant–or pretends to be–of his own newspaper’s reporting. As I wrote in the earlier post, the Washington Post, on September 18, 2001, wrote:
In Jersey City, within hours of two jetliners’ plowing into the World Trade Center, law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river.
Kessler tweeted a link to his column:

Update: Some readers have tweeted to The Fact Checker a Washington Post article from Sept. 18, 2001 as evidence of Trump’s claim. The article, which appeared on page 6, described FBI probes after the attack in Northern New Jersey, saying in the 15th paragraph “law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river.” Of course, “a number of people” obviously does not equal “thousands” — and “allegedly” indicates there is no video footage or other proof that celebrations actually took place. Recall that Trump claimed he saw this on television.
Actually, readers sent Kessler a link to my post, which in turn included a link to the Post story. (The one Kessler responded to did, anyway.) Kessler’s response is entirely inadequate:
1) The Post story said that “a number of people were detained,” but it doesn’t say how many were “seen celebrating the attacks” and partying on rooftops. Were all those who partied detained? We don’t know, but it seems unlikely. How many is “a number”? We don’t know.
2) I have already written several times that I think Trump exaggerated the story–I doubt that “thousands” celebrated the 9/11 murders in Jersey City–but Kessler (along with the New York Times, NPR, Tom Brokaw and the Associated Press) flat-out misrepresented it. Kessler said there is “nothing that we can find involving the Arab populations of New Jersey.” If he knew about his own paper’s story, this was untrue. Yet he still hasn’t either explained or retracted his assertion.
3) Kessler says that “allegedly” means there is no “proof that celebrations actually took place.” Does that mean that he knew about the Post’s article and chose to suppress it? His “fact check” doesn’t say that police investigated such allegations, it says that his crack staff found “nothing…involving the Arab populations of New Jersey.” But it took me less than two minutes to locate the Post’s September 2001 story.
In his original column he went on to say that there were allegations about Muslims celebrating in Paterson, New Jersey that have “never been authenticated.” So why didn’t he mention the investigation in Jersey City, which, unlike Paterson, was exactly what Trump was talking about?
4) Kessler also fails to address the statement by Irfan Khawaja in July 2004, which he presumably is aware of since I quoted it and linked to it in my post:
In an email to me on Dec. 16, 2003, Kovaleski [author of the September 18, 2001 Post article] indicated that his information had come from the Jersey City Police Department, and that he had confirmed the JCPD’s information via interviews of eyewitnesses of the celebration.
So the report that the Post published was not mere rumor. And, anyway, is Kessler telling us that his newspaper publishes stories that are just gossip and innuendo, so they can be disregarded and don’t even need to be mentioned by an alleged “fact checker”?
Did Kessler know about his own paper’s September 18, 2001 news story or not? If he didn’t, he is a lousy fact checker. If he did, his column was deceitful, to put it politely. So far, Kessler has refused to answer that question. If he does respond, I will publish an update. In the meantime, I award Kessler four Pinocchios.

Donald Trump is taking heat on social media for a Sunday afternoon tweet of statistics purporting to show that the vast majority of murdered black people in the U.S. are killed by other black people.
The tweet was apparently Trump’s response to a Twitter thread about support from white supremacists for the GOP front-runner.
It also comes the day after a Black Lives Matter protester said he was physically and verbally assaulted at a Trump rally.
The image Trump posted includes a list of “USA Crime Statistics ~ 2015.” The two that are highlighted are “Blacks Killed by Police ~~ 1%” and “Blacks Killed by Blacks ~~ 97%.”

The message immediately took off on the social media platform, with thousands of people retweeting it and liking it within an hour. But many also lashed out angrily against the real estate mogul, calling Trump a racist and questioning the veracity of the stats.
Indeed, an initial search to confirm the numbers couldn’t turn up a “Crime Statistic Bureau” in San Francisco.
However, the percentages do, in some ways, align with Department of Justice (DOJ) findings from several years ago. A DOJ study released in 2011 reported that 93 percent of black homicides were committed by other blacks between 1980 and 2008.
In 2014, that figure was roughly 90 percent in 2014, according to the latest DOJ numbers.
The category tweeted out by Trump that doesn't jive with DOJ statistics is “Whites Killed by Whites,” which Trump’s tweet indicated was 16 percent.
According to the department’s 2011 report, 84 percent of white homicides were committed by whites between 1980 and 2008. That number was 82 percent in 2014.
Trump has been roundly bashed during his presidential campaign for disparaging comments made about Mexican immigrants, Syrian refugees, Muslims and black people.
The candidate didn’t step away from any of his recent remarks during a Fox News appearance Sunday morning, even suggesting that the Black Lives Matter protester deserved to be assaulted.
"Maybe he should have been roughed up because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing,” he said.

They were alleged and no one could confirm those words were said. Even all the video didn't have any proof these things were said.
Regardless, the dude is a criminal and decided to show up at an event to start trouble. It looks like he found it. I hope he gets jail time for endangering the lives of innocent people.

No, you stretch the meaning of basic beyond reason. It has nothing to do with black or white. When you crash an event with the intent to disrupt, with an out of place display,
often suggests ass kicking needed. Throwing a black cover over the transgression doesn't make it acceptable.

Carson backs off support of Trump's controversial claim US Muslims cheered on 9/11
Ben Carson on Monday backed off his initial support for Donald Trump’s controversial claim that American Muslims were cheering in New Jersey on Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center fell, as the assertion was decried elsewhere as untrue.
Carson was asked about Trump’s comments at a press conference Monday in Nevada. Asked if he’d seen the footage Trump first referenced over the weekend, Carson responded that he had.
“I saw the film of it,” he said, adding that he saw it in “newsreels.”
Asked to expand, the Republican presidential candidate said: “There are going to be people who respond inappropriately to virtually everything. I think that was an inappropriate response. I don’t know if on the basis of that you can say that all Muslims are bad people. I really think that would be a stretch.”
But hours after spearking to reporters, Carson's campaign changed its position in an interview with ABC News.
"He doesn't stand behind his comments to New Jersey and American Muslims," campaign spokesman Doug Watts told ABC. "He was rather thinking of the protests going on in the Middle East and some of the demonstrations that were going on in celebration of the towers going down.
"He doesn't stand behind his references and apologizes for the mistaken references. It was a mistake on his part and he clearly wasn't really thinking about New Jersey, he was thinking about the Middle East."
Trump, however, wasn’t backing down on his claim that he saw “thousands” cheering in Jersey City, even as the city's mayor said the front-running Republican presidential hopeful has "memory issues, or willfully distorts the truth."
Trump first told the story Saturday at a rally in Birmingham, Ala., as he pressed the need for greater surveillance, including monitoring certain mosques, in the wake of the Paris attacks.
"I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down," Trump said.
Trump repeated the claim Sunday in an interview on ABC's "This Week" after host George Stephanopoulos explained that police had refuted any such rumors at the time.
"It did happen. I saw it," said Trump. "It was on television. I saw it."
"There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey, where you have large Arab populations. They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down," he said.
"I know it might be not politically correct for you to talk about it," he added, "but there were people cheering as that building came down, as those buildings came down. And that tells you something."
In a statement, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop criticized Trump for his remarks.
"Trump is plain wrong, and he is shamefully politicizing an emotionally charged issue," said Fulop. "No one in Jersey City cheered on September 11th. We were actually among the first to provide responders to help in lower Manhattan."
