Yes I'd do it. We have this one-time small window to get a FA with cap-room and if Hedo is the best available option then take him.

My worst fear is not doing anything rather than overpaying someone.

How much would Artest cost?

7, 7.5, 8, and 9?

Certainly less with as much or more production.

He doesnt fit the culture? I disagree. He is a hard worker. He plays the game the right way. He is a good team
mate and outside of his past problems, he s been a quality guy.

With our group of guys he would continue doing well I think.

If the Magic manage to land Sheed, you can crown them before the season even starts.

...as long as they are all healthy, then I would have to agree with you. Sheed is ready for a change of scenery and a little extra motivation these days [Detroit / Michigan in general are very depressing places right now]

A couple things to keep in mind. A free agent can only get 8% annual raises. A deal netting him 50 million for 5 years would need to start just north of 8.5 million per year.

Its a starting point in a negotiation. But I bet he gets 4 years and $40 million, and it should be us who gives it to him.

eww.

like someone said, that's gonna be one hell of an

Good point about 8%, but over 5 years at 8% raises (from the initial year), the salaries would look something like this:

1: $8.17m
2: $9.4772m
3: $10.1308m
4: $10.7844m
5: $11.438m

Total: $50.0004m

The raises would be .6536m a year.

I totally disagree about Artest. I do not want that headcase anywhere near this team. We do not have A Duncan/Ginoboli or Jordan/Pippen type core to deal with him (thinking of Rodman).

It's 8% over the previous year, isn't it? So the raw amount would change every year. Also, you added 16% for year 2.

Year 1: $8.50M
Year 2: $9.18M
Year 3: $9.91M
Year 4: $10.70M
Year 5: $11.56M

Total: $49.84M

So almost exactly like that, I think.

Yes. Goddammit. Excel skills fail. Common sense fail. Math fail.

I am shamed.

I like Artest better too. Signing him would also severely weaken a conference rival.

OK. I made a logical mistake before, but I have licked my wounds and shamed myself BUT need to point out that the raise is consistent from year to year: it's 8% of the first year. It does not compound.

So... 8.5 base would put it at 49.3 total.

A first year salary of $8.62m puts the raises at 0.6896m, and the total at 49.996.

1: 8.62
2: 9.3096
3: 9.9992
4: 10.6888
5: 11.3784
Total: 49.996

I think. I'm more mixed up today than normal :)

You guys done quibbling over a few hundred thousand? For gods sake, Ed McMahon died!

Honestly, I am less concerned with the dollars than with the length. 3 years/$30 million would be more palatable to me than 5 years/$50 million.

I could live with 4 years and a team option for a 5th for Hedo, he is a very unselfish player as well. Like one poster said above, i'd rather overpay than stand pat and do nothing.

Yikes, yikes, yikes.

Hedo is coveted by some because he was pretty much the best one to create with the ball in his hands in Orlando. He will not be the #1 option doing that here (and one would hope with Bayless's development, not even #2) - so - his services are not that important here. 4 years? 5 years? That's way too long for him. 5 Years with the last two being the team option is as long as it should be.

artest please @ 35mil for 4 years!? like people have said before not the headcase he once was.... hes no longer ron ron... just artest.... next year he will just be a symbol.... like φ or something

Too long and too much.

For those who worry that Artest doesn't fit the chemistry of our team, try imagining how Turk will fit in 3 years from now when we want to start Batum but are still paying Hedo $10 mil per. He'll be overpaid, so we won't be able to trade him. We'll have Aldridge and Roy at the 2 and 4, so there's really nowhere else to put him. We're fucked. But Hedo is a "character guy." So we'll have that going for us.

So just so I get this straight....

To make all of you happy we need to bring in someone young, cheap, and on an all-star level.

i dont want really any more rookies other than the ones we got from the draft this year and i dont even really want them all... i like pendagraph and mills seems exciting... but im not to sure about claver or cunningham as i dont know much about either.... but i dont really wanna trade for another guard because that basically means we give up on bayless and i like the little ripped dinosaur that he is....

That would fantastic - but I personally do not think that Turk is a huge upgrade as the big FA/Trade target - especially not for so long.

If all we do is get an upgrade at PG defense and call it a day - I would be happy, if we can do more - I will be really excited. This team is a 15mpg more for Oden from being a real dark-horse contender as is.

If we can get El Capitan or Turk - I would go for El Capitan every day of the week and twice on Tuesdays.

I agree with most in here and that is to much for Hedo but I would still take Hedo at 50 million for 5 years over Deng at 70 million. I don't think Deng can even beat out Batum next year. Deng is done IMO or at best will be just a role player and at least Hedo has a couple more good years left and maybe more.
