Two maids get 10 years, 1,000 lashes for sorcery

Asians were accused of practicing witchcraft on their employers

Published Monday, May 20, 2013

A Saudi court sentenced two Asian housemaids to 10 years in jail and ordered their lashed 1,000 times each after they were found guilty of indulging in sorcery at their employers’ houses in the Gulf Kingdom, a newspaper reported on Monday.

Their Saudi employers reported the two maids to the Gulf country’s feared religious police, saying they had discovered that their families had been harmed because of sorcery practiced by the maids against them.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice who searched the two houses in Riyadh found talismans and other magic items in the bedrooms of the two maids, Sabq Arabic language daily said.

“The court found them guilty and sentenced them to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes each,” the paper said without identifying the maids or specifying the harm they caused.

Saudi Arabia, which strictly enforces Islamic law, has beheaded many persons convicted of practicing magic over the past years.

More than two million domestic servants work in Saudi Arabia, mostly from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Africa.

Sorry. We need them as allies to fight eternal war to destabilize all neighbors that Israel dislikes.

Go pick on secular countries. Well actually, with Iraq and Libya gone, Syria's the only secular country there. A little magic will kill or torture the remaining secularists.

Religion of Peace.

It's a death sentence. A thousand lashes is a death sentence. The ten years are irrelevant.

The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Mutaween) is the same Orwellian thug patrol that let 15 girls burn to death/get trampled in a building fire because they weren't dressed appropriately for the street. They went so far as to beat girls trying to escape forcing them back into the building. The building was locked from the outside to prevent gender mixing.

As much as I love to fight ignorant railing against Islam, I will say this: Fuck Saudi Arabia.

Can someone explain the "1,000 lashes" to me, and what that will actually entail? Is that literal, and if so, how do they administer it? Is it really a death sentence as maxiep describes? This one's new to me...

Of course liberals will say "leave them alone!". This shit makes me sick. I want to nuke the entire middle east, but it would kill lots of good people too.

That is just insane! I can't believe how backwards some of these Middle East countries are.

They must interpret the good book incorrectly huh?

You need to keep in mind that Islam is largely shameless copy of the older Abrahamic religions.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"

If you were going to set up some crazy country ruled by a literal interpretation of the morals and ethics of the either testament it wouldn't be so dissimilar to SA.

It's not something you hear about as much from other Sharia law countries as there's a great deal of variation among them. The fundamentalist countries with complete Sharia systems are often the countries from which information doesn't flow freely especially with regards to policing and jurisprudence. Another reason it's murky is that witchcraft blurs the line between hudud, crimes for which punishments are listed in the scripture, and tazir, crimes for which punishments are determined by the judge. Tazir punishments are not meant to be so severe. In terms of Islam itself, the religion is obsessed with jinn's (genies), or evil spirits, as well as evil glares, sorcery, and poisoning. Saudi Arabia is at the forefront of this awfulness. Men and women are accused of/executed for witchcraft.

I guess it goes without saying that these two women ran afoul of the master of the house (non-compliant) and were likely accused to ensure their silence/obliterate their credibility.

A 1,000 lashes would kill them. I was going to post the exact same thing until I seen maxiep already did. It's a death sentence.

Shit, so they're actually going to whip these women to death? I figured it might have just been a figure of speech or something. That's just disturbing... what a brutal way to die...

Doing a quick search it looks like they do spread them out usually.

Witches are routinely accused and burnt alive in many sub-Saharan African countries like Kenya, Tanzania and Ghana.... by Christians.

I'm not sure but I think they get their lashes over a period of time as so not to kill them and thus prolonging the torture.

And this is why some of us are terrified at the notion of combining church and state.

I couldn't agree more with Fuck Saudi Arabia.

I respect that you know far more than I do about Islam and the middle east, so I would like to hear your take on something I read today that mystifies me.

In Egypt, they have either pass legislation, or are considering legislation that will allow husbands to have sex with their wife for up to six hours after the wife is dead.

Is that an Egyption thing, or an Islamic thing? Why the HELL would they think this is a good thing for husbands to do? Do you have a sense for how Muslim women feel about this?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

"liberals" are saying to leave them alone? Who are these mysterious liberals you are referring to?

I am referring to the isolationist policy that most liberals I read adhere to. They don't want to interfere with other countries' affairs usually.

Pardon me for nit-picking, but that's non-interventionism, not isolationism.
