Two way contracts

He's doin work here! We need this skillset of the bench.

MIL was so desperate for help on the wing, they signed Pat Connaughton. Come December 15, we need to convince them Nik Stauskas is an upgrade over Patty Baseball and trade one of our surplus guards for one of their surplus bigs.

They currently have five centers and four power forwards on their roster. Lets work out a trade that balances the rosters of both teams (and no, not Tyler Zeller, we have the big white lottery bust position filled on our roster).

Zeller was surprisingly effective last year.

MIL seems to be hoarding big men the way POR is hoarding guards.

Is he really off the table? Is his deal guaranteed, or could he still be cut between now and opening night?

Although they don't give specifics on his contract, this article in the Milwaukee Sentinel implies that Woods' contract is not guaranteed, that its a training camp invite with a chance to make the roster. They mention that Woods, along with Shabazz Muhammad are non-guaranteed contracts:

"He is expected to join the Bucks for training camp with the opportunity to compete for a roster spot, similar to Shabazz Muhammad,"

They also state that MIL currently has 22 players on their roster and will need to cut that to 20 by the start of training camp, and of course, they will need to cut that to 15 plus two 2-ways by mid-October.

MIL obviously needs to cut some of their bigs. Giannis will eat up most of their minutes at the 4, with Ersan Ilyasova getting most of the back up minutes, followed by D.J. Wilson (guaranteed contract) as their 3rd string PF. At center, they have Brook Lopez, John Henson, Thon Maker all on guaranteed deals, plus Tyler Zeller, Brandon McCoy and Woods on non-guaranteed deals.

Since Zeller makes the most and MIL is hard capped, I expect he'll be cut before his deal becomes guaranteed. That leaves Woods and McCoy competing for one (if that) roster spot (possibly a 2-way). With six bigs already guaranteed contract, will MIL commit to carrying a 7th big man. That seems excessive for a 15-man roster. Maybe they cut Zeller and McCoy and offer Woods a 2-way contract.

Of course, Woods could decline their offer, we don't have anything more to offer him but a 2-way contract as well. MIL seems to have the inside track on signing him, but with their glut of guaranteed contracts at the 4 and 5, he'd actually have more of a chance to actually see NBA minutes in POR with our lack of front court depth.

FYI, it's "Wood" not "Woods".

Caught you slippin!

Evidently McCullough got a two way offer from a team but turned it down because he’s looking for a guaranteed contract, and if he doesn’t get it, he’ll head overseas. Playing overseas will be good for his game imo.

I’d still sign Brandon Sampson. Shit maybe even give him one of those exhibit 10 deals; training camp invite that could turn into a two way contract. Only problem is since we don’t have a g league affiliate, we couldnt offer a bonus. Still, beats sitting on the street.

How could we give him an Exhibit 10 Contract with a full roster?

The same way we can invite players to training camp.
I guess the better question is why?

We don't have room for another big league contract so why would we sign him to an Exhibit 10 instead of a simple Two-Way, since the Exhibit 10 would turn into a 2-way contract?

Because it gives the team flexibility in case someone better pops up for a two way spot.

Bump. think Portland will be active on the waiver wire to fill those two spots. Any names that are on the bubble that also qualify for two way deals?

Maybe. Neil's weird. He likes fringe NBA players but doesn't seem to like the G-League.

What part of this confuses you? That he likes fringe NBA players? That he doesn't seem to have an appreciation for the G-League?

What does any of that have to do with what I asked?

I said maybe because he likes reclamation projects and fringe NBA players which are usually two-way contract players, but two way contract players spend a lot of time in the G-League (which Olshey doesnt seem to vakue) and last year he signed a guy who was injured all year and didnt even play, as well as Baldwin who was extremwly obvious.

I asked what bubble players (meaning guys that might get cut by other teams) are out there that also qualify for two way deals. “Maybe” isn’t an answer.

How the hell would I know what bubble guys that haven't been cut yet that Neil will pursue with a two way contract? Jeez, I was more-so pointing out a contradiction in Olsheys ways, I didn't know you were desperate for a "yes" or a "no".

At least I know how to turn the snark off.

I wasn’t asking you specifically, so maybe don’t respond??? Your two cents isn’t needed everywhere.

Could Phoenix cut Bender? He’s looked pretty bad and they’ll need to cut two players to get down to 15. He has a team option for ‘19 that obviously won’t be picked up, and he’s buried on the depth chart this year and wouldn’t play anyway.

I’m wondering because he fits Olsheys MO and (theoretically) also fits Stotts’ system. He’d also be eligible for a two way.

like you said he looks bad...

There’s a reason players are on two way deals. They have flaws, they’re not developed, etc. I’d take a chance on a lottery pick that hasn’t turned 21 yet.
Bender played in Israel before the draft and it was evident he's over hyped. still very young but I didn't see much in him

Not knowing Bender's personal story, it doesn't really make sense for a guy like that to play on a two way contract. He could go back to Europe and make so much more money. He'd probably only accept an actual full NBA contract. The only way that wouldn't be the case is if he is set on making the NBA thing work and is willing to grind it out in the G-League to make that happen. I could be wrong but Bender seems like the type who wouldn't want to deal with that grind.

It’s a lot easier to get back to Europe than it is to get back into the NBA. Europe will always be there as an option for Bender. While it’s a comfortable life, it’s nothing compared to the potential earnings in the NBA. Plus he’s still so young. Most guys that end up going back don’t do it until later in their careers.

In this theoretical scenario, he’d still get paid his $4m, or whatever he’s set to make. Spending a couple months in the g league could be worth it as long as theres some sort of handshake agreement that eventually he would get converted (ala Baldwin) to a regular contract.

I’m gonna go a little outside of the box.

Anthony Bennett.

Yeah yeah bust, whatever. If he didn’t have desire, he wouldn’t be wasting his time in the G league.

His numbers last year

14.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2 spg, 1.8 apg, .470 FG %, 42% 3PT (on 6 attempts a game) 77 FT %

Still only 25 and qualifies for a two way.

This sounds just like the type of player that needs Stotts and Portland.

Bennett’s sudden shooting ability isn’t due to a technique change, or one-on-one work with a three-point specialist. It’s actually simple; he found something he’s been searching for his entire career.

Confidence.

“Just having someone there that believes in me and tells me to keep shooting is definitely great to have in your corner,” he said. “While I’ve been [in Maine], I definitely have that from everybody. Down the line from the coaches to the players. It’s definitely an important piece to anybody’s game, just having that confidence.”

“Definitely a lot more comfortable,” Bennett said in regards to the corner shot. “Like I said, I’ve been working on it. Just working on the consistency as well. Coach gives me the confidence to take them. He draws up plays to shoot the corner three as well. Just having all that around me just shows that everybody is confident in my shooting ability.”

In addition to having the entire team behind him and believing in his ability, Bennett cited the ability to play “carefree” as a huge reason for his numbers in the G League.

“It’s definitely a big piece, especially in the system I’m in,” he said. “The coach that I’m playing under really cares about effort on the defensive end, or just effort in general. Just playing under that, playing under him and with these guys has kind of helped me to I guess, relax on the court, and play relaxed. The G League is definitely a place that I feel like you can come back and get your confidence.”

With newfound confidence, Bennett still wants to prove that he’s no fluke.

“Just being able to prove to myself that I’m here to stay,” he said. “That I got picked No. 1 for a reason. Just got to fix up on a couple of things and remain healthy. Just go out there, play carefree like I’ve been doing and remain confident.”

Yeah know its easy to tear this idea up, like really easy... Anthony Bennett well he hasnt worked out, but yeah know what I wouldnt mind giving it a shot, its kind of an unconventional idea but if it works that’d be pretty fantastic.

I mean he looked better in the g league than biggie did, and it doesn’t take long to tell how much more athletic he is. And it’d be a two way contract. No downside. It’s just a little annoying seeing all these guys available that are better options than Biggie knowing deep down Neil isn't gonna do anything anyway.
