Something tells me Andre and Crosby will hold this spot down. From what I hear on Crosby he's got Long type of aggression out there!
 
I think 1 or 2 loses are possible now. This was a huge loss to the blind side unless Andre turns out to be major, which I doubt because he is going up against an nfl first rounder in game 2.
 
Outside of Mariota being fully recovered, I can't find any reason to be optimistic right now.

For reals? I get that it's kinda your thing, but dang that must be frustrating. 4 of 5 starters back on oline that has supposedly added bulk. Deep d-line. Routinely one of the top defensive backfields in the country. Probably top two 1-2 punch at rb (I probably would rank UGA just ahead) then a beast of a freshman behind them in Freeman, and another 4 star rb after that? A defense that is saying all the right things about being more aggressive.

I'm not guaranteeing a great year or anything. And I'm not really a sunshine pumper. But can't find any reasons to be optimistic? o_O yikes
 
The defensive backfield looks good - the front 7...the best you can say is that they have a lot to prove.

Now they have lost one of their 2 best O-linemen. That's bad for our QB, and bad for a running game that was somewhat exposed at the end of the season. IMHO, Marshall is a system back who is badly over-rated by some Duck fans. Unless Tyner steps up, I expect the running game to take a step back. (and just watch - because I feel good about Tyner's future, he will be a huge flop)

I hate seeing the team going into the season saying "well, we can win if Mariota is perfect..." . That is unfair to him and not very realistic.

who are you quoting? I've not read any player or fan saying that.

Albeit prior to Johnstone going down, most every site that does predictions has Oregon projected as one of the top 5 teams in the country & the Pac 12 writers picked them as the heavy favorite to win the conference. Two straight 1st team All Pac 12 selections attest to how good MM is and he's obviously the straw that stirs the Ducks drink. If he's not healthy, then they aren't projected as a dominant team... simple as that. The season is a gauntlet and it will take a good deal of luck to make it through without sustaining too many key injuries, but at least they've a shot of competing to make the inaugural playoff system... I'm pretty excited to see the season play out

who is the 2nd O-lineman? Johnson was the first one hurt from the bowl game. He just had another injury or re-injured.
 
Let's remember that Kyle Long came into Oregon for one year and by end of the season was blocking guys into the bleachers. Although we lost Johnstone for the year this may be just the push Andre needs to be great, if he stumbles, Hunt can come over to that position and I still think Crosby is going to be fierce and rotate in often as a freshman. Greatwood has the same look in his eye about this kid that Campbell does for Royce. Outside of Johnstone, the rest of our line is experienced and ready to rock.

We've got more running backs that are lethal right now than anyone in the country except maybe Bama and I still like us more. Marcus is simply the best so the only place I see a hair bit of tension is in the receivers, not because of talent rather just game experience. Devon Allen could turn out to be a faster slightly bigger version of Jeff Maehl and that would be a great thing. Carrington has great size too and he's the X factor I think. If he takes off with the TE's we have and our running back stable, not forgetting Marcus, you just wont be able to stop it! One more X factor and huge target for Marcus is Stanford and he's healthy this year. The key is can Marcus bring all this raw talent together? Unlike like years past and one of the reasons I so wanted Marcus to come back for this year is so he could do exactly what he did in practice yesterday, be vocal and get HIS team going. Once he's mastered the "command my team" section of his game he'll be ready for the pro's!

It could be a lot worse we could have the best receivers and backs in the country with no QB or amazing center to get the ball to them.

The worst worst case is we could run a huge TE package like Stanford does and with Marcus and our backs and our O line, just punish the living shit out of every other defense on 10 yard gains and a bruising rushing attacks at our tempo.

Sorry, what I was trying to say was that he was our second best lineman. I didn't make myself clear.

the Ducks don't run a smash mouth style running attack... they just don't. They don't recruit those type of OLineman & they don't prepare/train for that style of play. Besides all that, Stanford, Bama & the other schools that do run that sort of Offense (and recruit & train for it) don't enjoy anywhere in the vicinity of the sort of yards per rush you're claiming the Ducks would gain in a "worst case" scenario. Oregon did average more yards per rush then either the Tree or Tide last season, finishing once again in the top 10 schools in the country in that statistic. They achieve gaudy stats by spreading teams out and forcing the D to defend a variety of threats. It's not as base/macho as the sort of offense you prefer, but it's been incredibly successful. Very very doubtful they're going away from the things they've had so much success doing anytime soon.

I must admit, before Colt self-destructed I wished the Ducks would install a smash-mouth package with him in the backfield and run it a few times a game. Just a change of pace.
 
You're right we don't run a smash mouth style offense Stomp, but if our receivers freeze this year we could. I'm not saying slow down the tempo so don't go there... I'm saying utilize our very experienced O line and install our huge TE's and allow Marshall, Tyner and Royce to punish.... Tyner, Marshall and Royce are big backs not like the DAT, Barner, LMJ times. These kids have size. Tyner has speed, Royce is a truck and Marshall see his gaps very well. Take our tempo, match it with our stud O line's finesse and run some power up the 1 and 3 gaps with our monster rb's. First, no one anywhere would expect us to attack left or right of our center gap and run straight north to south, and with an experienced O line like we have that has size, 10 plays a game like this would make the D damn honest and open up our 1 cut and run philosophy. With the talent we have we could run an up tempo west coast offense like the 49er's used in the late 80's under Walsh. Montana, Rathman, Craig and Rice times. 10 yard hits to our TE's, fast tempo reset, pitch to Tyner, suck the defense in, kill um deep with Allen, Stanford and Carrington, then repeat. Marcus can easily seam the ball where he wants and if all breaks down he'll take off for 15 yard trot.

That's what I'm saying.......

Tempo stays, but utilize our TE's and punishing RB's if our receivers become unreliable do to experience!
 
Despite incredible success, "we" could ditch everything and install a completely different offense then what guys have been recruited for and whats currently being practiced... sure, "we" could. Nothing illegal about it. Similarly we could run the Wishbone. We could run the Wing T. The night before the Stanford game, we could install Mouse Davis's Run & Shoot. We could take the field in roller skates & tutus. In hypothetical land anything is possible. My money is on none of the above happening.

You're probably too young to remember, but Oregon has had many talented bigger backs in the past decade and still ran their spread. Jonathan Stewart, LeGarrett Blount & Tra Carson were all at least as big as Freeman

The only practice reports are Moseley's and as the reporter working for the school's official media outlet he only relays so much (& it's almost all sunshine). He did say recently that Jake Fischer has been working on switching from right to left tackle, which makes sense. Johnstone has been especially nimble/quick for an Olineman which is part of why he's excelled at Left Tackle. Andre has seemed more of a road grader type then nimble counterpuncher though interviews with him and others claim that he's ratcheted his game up a couple notches. As for Crosby, when asked who was standing out in these fall practices he was the first OLineman DeForest Buckner mentioned in a recent rivals interview... the 2nd was Jake who missed some time and has just been back for the last two days

We'll know more soon enough as the 2 deep will be announced shortly
