I'm dealing with plantar fasciitis for the past 8 months and it sucks. But its finally now getting a little bit better.

These have helped me the most of everything I've tried... with Brooks shoes and any other shoe I wear... been wearing them 100% when I am not at home.

the key is a shoe/arch support that keeps your foot from flexing in the middle... and of course good cushioning on the heel
and I wear cork sole slippers when at home.
never ever go barefoot anymore.
lots of calf stretches and massages
use a heating pad on my foot first thing in the morning

Brooks shoes have been my favorite when running and just walking around. Their designs have gotten better than they were 20 years ago.

Nike has cool designs but their running shoes are bad.

Embrace the dad shoe era!

Brooks will outlast Nike, sorry to say. I have wide feet and Nike's run narrow.
Brooks are very comfortable.
Just bought my first pair of Skechers slip ons, they have wide and extra wide. Not bad for casual wear.

My wife had horrible plantar fasciitis. Finally, a year later ended up getting two steroid shots in her heel. Hurt like hell, but fixed it pronto.

I am old (60). Not as old as some of you fucks, but old. I have type 2. I did not take it seriously, and because of that I have neuropathy in my feet pretty bad. Nothing helps. With my other shit, working out is a bit tough, but I did start doing tai chi. I slimmed down slightly, but what it has done more than that is increase blood flow. Slightly better feeling in feet.

Take care of yourself and continue getting in shape

Hit that scale this morning before our flight out of town. 255lbs FAMS!!!
Has to be my first time in the 250s, easily since I was in my mid 20s……
Shared my journey, kinda’, on social media for the first time today, besides with you guys here.

Nice work!!

:smiley-beerchug:

Good for you brother. Curious how you changed, if you changed your diet? I can safely say that my loss of of weight is pretty much all dietary. Just now starting to mix in exercise. It’s obvious, but I didn’t realize the fuel you are giving your body, good or bad is what it’s all about. I’m no expert, but I wish that had dawned on me sooner.

As my electrophysiologist told me when my AFib was ramping up and he wanted me to lose weight, it wasn't so MUCH how much I was eating, it was WHAT I was eating. When I started making better choices, the weight started to come off. When I threw in a morning walk, it got even better. And now that I am better about keeping more active, I can afford to "cheat" every now and again as a reward. That shit tastes so much better when you have had to earn it and you don't get it very often......

Glad for all your progress. Diet is super important - yes might be the single most important factor.

I have been amazed at how important sleep is. Thats something I always overlooked as I thought if I could train my body to function on 4-5 hours of sleep I was gaining more "life" than others. Totally believe thats false now. Instead I believe good sleep is reducing my biological age and will extend both my healthspan/lifespan. I like one comment I heard that said if longer sleep wasn't important than why didn't hundreds of thousands of years of natural selection favor humans that functioned best on 4-5 hours sleep vs 8 hours sleep? Obviously there is an advantage to being productive more hours of the day. Would seem that your body has tons of repairs happing in those extra 3-4 hours of sleep that are critical for short term and long term health.

Exercise of course is important too. Increasing V02 max and increased muscle mass have a higher correlation to reducing all cause mortality than majority of harmful lifestyle choices combined (overweight, heavy smoking, heavy drinking, etc). Increased strength (ie muscle mass) increases healthspan as you age too - some people in older years say "oh I'm too out of shape to easily go up those stairs like decades ago" while really they are just weak and a stair step is now 80% of their one rep max while if it was 40% they could easily go up far more stairs. For moderate cardio it improves the functioning of your mitochondria to burn fat for fuel. Many people with metabolic dysfunction can't effectively burn fat for fuel, they can store sugar as fat but they can't burn it. Moderate cardio trains your body to burn that fat as well as open up glycogen stores. Now when you eat foods that previously raised blood sugar it just gets stored as glycogen in your muscles and you avoid insulin spikes. So exercise gives you a lot of flexibility in having a totally healthy diet that would be unhealthy if more seditary.

Finally as you improve greatly in one area I've noticed you basically must improve in another area to continue further improving. That is you can't maximize any of diet/sleep/exercise super high if any one of those areas is deficient. They all are related. Sleep gave me the mental focus and discipline to make improvements in exercise/diet that I could never do if I tried to improve only one of exercise/diet first.

I have read nothing but how important consistent sleep is to all aspects of health. That just isn’t an option for me and never will be. Not until I retire. So trying to deal with my crazy schedule on 10 hours of sleep one night and 4 the next while changing time zones constantly will continue on.

I bet you @crandc might even consider switching teams to get with this?

Yeah you might not be able to get excellent sleep, but you can probably take steps to get the best sleep you can with all the limitations and restrictions you have.

Perhaps you are already doing a great job of this.

Some people will not even make the effort or overlook sleep importance so I think that is the difference.

Yeah I have crazy work schedule at times and young kids - some nights I just can't get great sleep. But trying to do my best is a hell of a lot better then watching hours of TV before bed and eating 4th meal or such.

In bed….I’m watching shows/movies in my iPad or on instagram right up til I feel sleepy. Also listen to podcasts as I fall asleep.

Had a check up today. Four months, since I started this journey. They said my blood pressure is looking fantastic. Said I don’t need to come in every month now, every three months. Weighed in at an even 250 pounds this morning. went to the beach with the wife this weekend, for the first time since mid October, I had french fries and a cheeseburger. Tasted damn good. But I could only eat half of each. I will admit that it messed with my body. I was on the toilet for the last couple days. Still haven’t had any soda, and don’t plan on it. The doctor said that it’s OK to have a cheat meal every now and then, but if I’m gonna feel like that after, I don’t think I will do it again anytime soon. Would love to hear from you out there, that are also working on your weight and health. Would love to hear updates, keeps me motivated!
Down 55 pounds since October and 85 from 2018!!!!!! LFG FAMS!

Good on ya. Keep it going

I am in Greece, still able to mostly eat well, but sheep yoghurt with honey and walnuts is hard to avoid. Also had a glass of Sahlab one night, but generally, I am not doing too bad eating here.

Food there is amazing. Enjoy your trip!

Funny what you said about body rebelling. Went to lunch last weekend at Italian place in San Francisco. Had aperol spritz, very mild cocktail, before lunch and ice cream sundae for dessert. Combination of alcohol and dairy did a number on me. I will spare you the details.

You know you're getting old when your doctors are retiring. My podiatrist was latest. Went to another doctor in practice. Because I was new, her assistant asked me a long list of questions that seemed to have nothing to do with feet. Then I realized of course they are all diabetes related since so many people have foot trouble from diabetes. I don't have diabetes. Just sore feet. We didn't evolve walking on concrete.

My doctors were retiring also and I'll admit to some serious anxiety about finding new ones. But in the end (with some due diligence and candor up front) it turned out to be a real improvement over the old timers. I had my old GP for roughly 35 years, and while I was generally satisfied, he was kinda stuck in his ways (and the past) and I was getting frustrated by the time he pulled the plug. When I went "shopping" for another GP (and cardiologist) I made it clear that I wanted someone who was younger and more progressive (medically speaking), a good listener with good people skills. In the end I feel like I hit it out of the park (and my GP is MUCH closer home). I feel like (as a senior citizen??) I am treated with more respect and "heard" by younger doctors. I also find it easier to call bullshit when I feel the need. I kinda wish now my original GP had taken an earlier retirement........
