The NBA has informed teams the new cap is expected to be at $99 million for the 17-18 season.

The most recent projection in April was at $101 million.

Before that lowered projection, it was at $103 million and was at one time projected to be as high as $108 million.

The cap for the 16-17 season was $94.1 million.

A drop in the number of playoff games played contributed to the drop, as did teams spending more in 2016 free agency than anticipated.

yep and this only exacerbates the awful signings we made last summer and the "handcuffs" tighten, I'd guess we dump at least one salary with a pick if we can, other teams with capspace are getting more leverage and we get less

So even MORE over the cap? Great....

Neil, you've got some work to do. And if it involves giving up 1st round picks to get rid of your mistakes, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

he was spending like a drunken sailor and this is turning out to be a very bad hangover

What was the reason Paul didn't allow the Hawks permission to speak to him again? I don't get the love fest for this soap actor who is soooooo full of hot air. This on the eve of another day in which he's going to default his way through another draft and going to disappoint ONCE again! Well...we'll just wait for FA before we wait for the Feb Twenty something trade deadline. Only to have some Neil homer say "Just wait! He's going to knock it out my of the park at draft time!"

I seen enough three years ago.

Ugh.

This gives Neil the ammo to use an asset/pick to cover up his mistakes.

The number crunchers had to know of this eventuality. Three or four months ago the news came out that the cap was going to be lower than expected. 3 million isn't going to make him change his decision making process. What??? He's going to dump a player he wouldn't have before this shocking news.... Come on.

I love how people turn on the GM for things working against him. If it were the opposite, fans would still find a way to bitch.

Same fans to claim they know what's going on in he organizational moves.

Yup. We could still have Patternash.

This news makes our bad contracts worse, and a little more difficult to move.

I don't think this news makes a huge impact on the Blazers' fortunes, but it definitely puts a crimp in the idea that those contracts will look better as the cap just keeps soaring and worse and worse deals are handed out.

Everybody is getting their panties in a wad over how a less than 2% drop in the salary cap effects our payroll and completely ignoring this:

"A drop in the number of playoff games played contributed to the drop"

This is the direct result of CLE and GSW waltzing their way to the finals. Hey Silver, you dip shit, this is why having two super teams and 28 sacrificial lambs is bad for your league. It costs everybody money. This is why you need to address competitiveness at the league level and not just tell the have-nots they need to play catch up when you helped stack the deck against them

BNM

How do you fix it though?

You guys do realize that if the owner wants to sign a player, to an obscene contract, it's pretty much going to happen right?

er, I mean. # FIRE OLSHEY

Once again Paul Allen the guy who writes the checks signed of on these contracts knowing the tax ramifications. Overall Neil has done a damn good job and the cap/tax situation should be none of our business or concern.

We have no one to blame but ourselves. We made dumbass decisions and overpaid at least 3 guys on our roster.

Why blame Silver and GS/CLE? When NO overpaid our guys, KD had already signed in GS. We should have predicted this drop in revenue and planned the payroll accordingly.

Just be glad we got lucky and Parsons didn't come over.

That's the thing, Parsons was NeO's first choice. Thank goodness he decided to go elsewhere. We could be even worse off. At least Turner plays.

can we have a two tiered GM system? Neil does the draft/trades and someone else does the FA signings

You guys realize Paul Allen has say right? It's his damn money to begin with if he wants to spend it on luxury tax who really gives a fuck? It's not like miraculously we were going to become a FA playa anytime soon, and all our guys will still be in their prime when those contracts expire.

But does he want to spend it on luxury tax? The chatter around the Blazers looking to drop salary suggests otherwise, though nothing is certain until we actually see what they do. If he doesn't want to pay luxury taxes, then these contracts hurt a lot if the Blazers want to re-sign any other players--like Nurkic, for example.

If he's willing to start paying the luxury tax, then yeah, I guess these contracts don't really matter.

But there is also counter chatter saying fuming salary isn't a priority at this moment. I think the will look to make trades for shorter contracts but it's not the main focus right now.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect it to be the main focus right now--they have a year, so they don't have to do anything drastic yet. Also, I think it is possible that Allen will start to pay luxury tax, but I don't think it's a given. If the team doesn't do a whole lot next season, I think he'll be very reluctant. If they push through to the Western Conference Finals or something, then I could certainly see him doing it.

Just because he is the owner, we cant question the money?

It inhibits our ability to be a long term contender because penalties and fees compound in more than just money restrictions. you know this right? Its not all about the money but the potential to inhibit future roster formings?

The fact is regardless of IF he wants to spend it, he may not be ABLE to spend it in a year or two if we remain over the cap and get into penalties.

Yes I'm fully aware that if we are over luxury 3 out of 4 years it compounds. It also isn't assessed until the last day of the regular season. We really don't have to worry till say trade deadline 2020. Sure some preemptive moves would be good but that doesn't mean we have to throw picks away this summer, we have time to be more patient for more favorable deals.

Being over the tax also:
  • Reduces our MLE
  • Eliminates our BAE
  • Prevents sign-and-trades
It's not just the eventual financial penalties.
