Unions, America's Backbone

I wonder how many of those union workers have already found a new job. Considering it has been close to a month now, if they haven't found a new job they would have been better off taking an 8% salary reduction.

Please, BB. They don't need to work. They have 99 weeks of fun coming up. Why do you need a company to pay you when you have unemployment?

You can't afford fun on an Unemployment check.

I didn't have a problem using it, since I paid into it. I also was pretty scrupulous about following the rules for doing so, though I've found out since that many aren't.

Do you want to ban unemployment because of a few bad apples?

No. As I said, Unemployment Insurance is something that should be used by people who paid into it if they need it. Same as flood insurance, car insurance, etc. If my apartment burned down I would expect GEICO to reimburse me for my belongings that I've been paying to insure, and I wouldn't feel any shame in using it. Same with UI. Especially with the added benefit of making sure my kids were fed.

However, I don't think 99 weeks is good (iirc, it's supposed to be 26), and especially if it's subsidized by the government.

In my experience, unemployment isn't fun, and if it goes as long as 99 weeks, is pretty fucking depressing. The longer you go without a job, the harder it is to get a job. That hole in your resume gets bigger and bigger. I was fully unemployed about two years, and was covered for 72 weeks iirc. back in 2001-2003. I was able to get a part-time job in late 2003, which lasted me until 2005 when I finally got picked up for some temp full-time work again. After that, it was clawing my way back into the workforce. I'm years behind on my 401k, and I always feel like my next paycheck could be my last. For people who give a shit about their lives (and that number is surprisingly high), unemployment is something that gets worse the longer it goes, until it stops. Then, it doesn't magically get better... it's just the same misery with no money. Thank god for my parents, or I'd have been homeless.

Top scale at 33/hour. That's more than 60k.. you do the math you're the Stanford guy.

HAHA! So $66k a year, instead of $60k, is balla status. You know you're living the dream when $6k per year makes a big difference. Makin' it rain!

to be fair, thats enough to make it rain one extra time per month, not too shabby

and for a single 20 something, 66k buys alot of hula hoops and pac man video cartridges or whatever the youngins are into these days

$66K ain't bad. People can crack their shit. But that's above median. Reviewing OR/WA stats, $66K is a solid figure, especially in one's20's. is it 1% level? No, but why crack shit? I know people my age with great educations and solid jobs, and they are happy at $50K. It ain't how much you make but how much you spend.

I know you're just cracking shit, Brainiac, but still, you're one in the crowd. I'd like to know how many people here make a legit $70K plus. And then who's under 45 or so?

Edit: I should say, "This is reasonable, unless you're in a union. Then you have the system bent over a barrel, and should be making double, or you're 'underpaid'."

Nope, we get about 10hrs of OT a week. Average top scale driver is earning between 80 and 100k with no college education and no student loans. Max out at 8 weeks vacation a year. The best healthcare coverage you'll find around.

Baller status? That's you that said that. I'm happy with my career decision. You can feel free to think about me though, you seem to like to take the time to put thought into my personal life.

Doesn't seem like a very Stanford thing to do.

Who wants to be average or at the median? It certainly isn't something to brag about.

What are some "Stanford thing(s) to do"?

For one, I think someone with a Stanford education wouldn't be insecure enough to try and mock someone that has a good paying job. Little things like that.

If I had a Stanford degree I'd be out making a difference in the world, not picking petty fights on Blazer message board with the little personal information you have about that person.

Makes me believe the Stanford thing is just a big charade.

Maybe he's just posting here while his PC runs c:\cure-cancer.exe?

Why can't you go make a difference in the world without a Stanford education?

You always deflect and make it about me. Something tells me you don't get laid very often.

i dont know what cracking shit means

i was being sincere though

Thanks, Mike Hummel. All these guys changed the subject once you proved them wrong. As you told us, the owners engineered the union vote, by cutting and cutting, to sell the company at a higher price. I read that elsewhere, but had forgotten it among all the propaganda. The media has misreported all union news since the late 1800s.

In my experience right wingers always change the subject or resort to personal attacks unrelated to the issue when the facts are suddenly on the table. I have seen shocking consistency on this since the strike started.
