UPDATE: Blazers will be sending their TV & Radio crews w/ the team on the road

Sounds like the franchise is going bush league now.

Maybe the franchise is just ahead of the curve. Maybe paying guys to stay at home and using opponents' camera shots is smart. Hopefully shrewd decisions like this are symptoms that the ownership group is ready to cut costs elsewhere to make overspending on the roster and therefore winning more palpable.

(if this is fucking up the income of @THE HCP I'm not cool with it at all)

Unless there's a no latency thing they can do remotely then it's going to suck and be awful to watch period. It's going to sound cheap.

You won’t see a change in home broadcasts at all….major difference on the road though…..but seems like you guys didn’t notice the difference during covid. During those shows, we only have control of 1 camera. All the other cameras were working for the other team. Makes my job insanely tougher, our director and producer as well. Doing some major rethinking about my career at this point. Already booking myself for a TNT playoffs run next spring. And got offered their baseball playoff package in October this fall. Who knows at this point….time to start working on our budget here at home.
SideNote: As this is the last year my daughter is home before she leaves to college, look like I’ll be around more, so that is a positive.

I dunno about anyone else but I noticed all broadcasts during covid stuff was really hard to sit through.

I hate that you're taking a 30% cut. Family time, yay! But man... Why did they make this decision? It seems so... I don't know, stupid and needless for a billion dollar owner.

Damn. I'm sorry to hear that you're getting a pay cut.

I hope they jerk their heads out soon.

After going over some numbers, looks like I will be taking roughly a 30% cut in pay. Kinda tough as the kids are in and about to go to college……

That's a big cut. That's messed up they have to screw over the little guy. Not to mention they are sacrificing the quality of 41 games. I don't agree with giving employees and fans the shaft to save a buck. Come on Blazers.

Wow dude sorry to hear that shit man. That’s a huge decrease. Ya should boycott or do a strike that’s absolute bullshit.

What the kind of penny pinching shit is this. Travel costs for broadcast crew is less than a rounding error. If that!

Curious why are you taking a 30% pay cut if you're still working the away games but just in Portland? Did you get paid more while out on the road for away games?

Hey everyone,

There is a good chance anyone affiliated or working for the Blazers, cant give their opinions on this publicly.
Lets let them divulge if they care to do so, but lets not keep asking them to speak on it, potentially putting them in a corner.

Just my two cents.

He roasted them for doing it pretty much.

In the last two full seasons, many teams cut back on travel for their broadcast teams as a safety measure during the height of the pandemic. But to my knowledge and from asking around in other markets, the Blazers are the only team currently planning to do this, at least on the television side, this coming season. Not that other teams doing the same thing would make it more defensible, but the Blazers being the only one of 30 teams making their broadcasters call games from home is glaring.

This news comes on the heels of the Blazers' first season under a new local broadcast rights contract after switching from the now-defunct NBC Sports Northwest to ROOT Sports last summer. Throughout the year, there were widespread complaints from fans about the channel not being available on some of the most widely-used streaming platforms, such as YouTube TV, Sling and Hulu. As of this writing, fuboTV and a new platform called Evoca are the only streaming services that carry ROOT Sports. And now, even the fans that do have access to the channel will be forced to watch a compromised version of the Blazers' broadcast for 41 games of the year.

Even purely as a cost-cutting measure, this move doesn't make much sense. Broadcasters fly on the team's chartered plane (no extra airfare) and stay at the team hotel on the road. Over the course of the season, the Blazers are saving at most a couple million dollars on hotel and meal per-diem costs for a handful of broadcasters and crew members, which is a drop in the bucket for a professional sports organization. The end result is that the fans who pay for cable or streaming packages to watch the team will get an inferior TV product.

The only logical explanation for this kind of move is that the organization is in the process of cleaning up its books ahead of a potential sale…but owner Jody Allen's official, publicly stated position is that the Blazers are not for sale.""

From what i just read the Blazers are the only team in the entire league of 30 teams doing this and they want to look into other options that the cost cutting might present. He specifically noted streaming services as many are still upset about the change to root.
Glad you will get some more time with the family and i'm also glad you are good enough at your job that you have options and can actually look for way to improve your situation.

  • No G-league team
  • Broadcasters not traveling on the road
  • No interviews for a new GM

We are the only team in the league to do any of those things, let alone all of them. Jody/BK might just think they are smarter than every other owner and franchise.

That's so fucked up. hopefully things will get better again for The HCP and his colleagues

This is adding to the decision to possibly quit my season tickets.

if the team wants my support it better start supporting its employees!

I really do feel for HCP, Demers and the rest of the talent/crew that are taking this kind of hit. It's gotta be a dream job for most of them and to have to take even a 30% cut in pay is a decent sized hit, but on top of that to know that you can't do the job the 'right' way, I'd be furious. It would be interesting to see how many people can tell if the broadcasters are there, I'd assume pretty much every one here could, if you're posting on a Blazers forum, you're not a casual fan. I'm not so sure the casuals can tell a difference though. The good news is that with our broadcast crews, they will know the guys still and hopefully bring a decent amount of insight. I know the ESPN crews doing late night P12 football from their homes feel like they got handed a roster 10 minutes before the game and did no background work at all, those broadcasts are nearly unwatchable.

We definitely noticed the difference. There was no reason to complain about it though. It was during and pandemic, and we were just happy to be able to watch games.

Don't forget gifting starters that we paid assets for to her brothers former business partner. I don't know any other teams doing that either.

So are we officially a farm team now or is Jody being vindictive? All the moves of the last few years look like someone trying to purposely drive the fanbase away.

Like she cares to tell the truth. She could easily also just say “we changed our mind we are selling”
