Hey Wheels, what'd you think of Arsenal's summer? Is Ozil enough?

Ozil is a HUGE shot in the arm, but Gunners still behind MCFC, maybe Chelsea, and probably ManU before the end of the campaign.. basically the points were mostly lost to those clubs last couple of years, which widened the gap between between 1 and 3/4. Ozil at least gives AFC the chance to get points from those matches now. I still think another FWD is needed, I really wish they could have gotten Ba on loan (though he wouldnt have helped vs Chelsea) and that other Forward was needed before Podolski was out for 3 months. #3 is still reasonable this year (unfortunately)

So, do we have to beat Mexico now?

I think technically we don't. But it'd put ALOT of pressure on the next 2 games (and we might need help from others). Hopefully we win tomorrow and Panama beats/ties Honduras. If both of those happen, we are in and have the last 2 games to possibly try out some new players.

I'm curious who is playing tomorrow. Due to suspensions, injuries and other issues, I have no clue who our RB, LB (I don't really like Beasley back there), 1 of the CB (Why the hell did Brooks fly back to Germany), CM (no Bradley or Cameron), RM (don't like Zuzi) and CF (no Jozy).

We might look like

Howard
Bedoya Goodson Gonzo Fab
Beckerman
Jones Mix
Donovan Johannsson
Dempsey

I want to see Guzan, but I doubt Howard gets replaced. Bedoya has been playing well as a FB in a 5 man defense in France (voted best player in a close 2-1 loss to PSG). Beckerman (usually I hate seeing him out there) provides cover for 2 attacking FBs. Maybe Sascha can play that role. I don't know too much about his game, but he did play well at Bosnia. Jones was decent after his horrible 25 minute start on Friday, but I think with Mix he'll be asked to do less distribution and therefore will look better (plus he won't have to worry so much about getting a yellow). Front 3 make the most sense to me since Aron is on fire right now and the only other option is EJ who I don't want to see out there as a starter. Not sure of the formation of the front 3, but those are the guys I think will be out there.

No matter who starts, its going to be nervy as hell. We have huge question marks all over the place and Mexico will be playing desperate.

Oh, and then there is this (the reason CB is a question for tomorrow). Fuck Campbell and fuck the assistant ref who called the foul. Campbell should be shown a retroactive yellow, Besler's should be reversed and the linesman should be suspended.

I am supposed to go to Brazil to work the World Cup.......If the US doesn't even make it, that would kinda' suck!

How's SoCal treating you Chop?

SoCal is good, but I miss the NW. I just realized its been 7 years since I've lived in the NW. How's your sister liking it down here?

Working the World Cup will be pretty sick, regardless of if the USMNT make it.

She's good, loving it down there. HCP Jr. just went down to spend 10 days with her and other family.

I want to bet you something that Liverpool will finish higher than Arsenal.

is that Joel Campbell on loan from Arsenal??? If so... F that guy and I hope he never gets first team minutes with the Gunners

I know they kept mentioning that someone was an Arsenal player on loan in..maybe Greece. But I don't remember who they were talking about.

What a stupid Yellow by Altidore at the end of the Costa Rica game.

That said, tomorrow is a much, much bigger game for Mexico than the US. If Mexico doesn't get 3 points, they are in serious trouble of not making it to Brazil.

yeah I believe he is on loan to Olympiacos. Embarrassing

Looks like we're starting (not sure how they are lining up exactly):

Howard
Fabian - Goodson - Gonzalez - Beasley
Jones - Beckerman
Bedoya - Dempsey - Donovan
GAM

Don't like EJ up top. Maybe he'll score off a header w/ his size. I think Beckerman in there means we'll play pretty conservatively to start, hopefully wear them down and then strike in the 2nd half. I guess I can't complain too much with that mentality, considering we gave up a goal in the opening minutes in CR. I'm guessing 2nd half subs of Bacon for EJ (or Dempsey if he looks shitty again) and Mix for Jones or Beckerman. Not sure what the 3rd will be.

And for HCP, this game is on at 5 on ESPN

Yeah, yeah, I get it. You don't care and you find soccer boring. Guess what, no one gives a shit that you don't care.

For those who actually care, here are the goals.

For EJ, I've said it before, I don't like him as a player. But, if there is 1 thing he does better than anyone else in our player pool, is get up for headers. He really should have put one away in the 1st half, but I can't hate on him too much this game (even though he didn't do all that much other than the headers). Hopefully his concussion isn't too bad.

Goal by Donovan, assist by Dempsey, but this score was 99% all Mix.

Now that we've qualified, time to get guys like Brooks, Aron, Brek, Lichaj, Kljestan and Mix some real burn to see how they'll do.

didnt you know!!! Baseball has ∞ more action than Soccer!! :MARIS61::MARIS61::MARIS61::MARIS61::MARIS61:

Haha. Don't you know, 1-0 in Baseball is a pitchers dual. Dos a cero in soccer is a snoozefest.

Looks like some people cared. ESPN broke the single game record for a non World Cup game. The old record was from the game at Azteca earlier this year. I'm guessing this doesn't include whoever had Spanish language broadcasting rights (maybe Univision). Yes the ratings are even close to football, etc, but they are growing and growing in the right demographics.

It's crap like this that gives soccer a bad name in America. This was Besler's yellow against Costa Rica that kept him out of last night's Mexico game. FWIW, the officiating crew in this game were all from Mexico.

Yeah, shit like that kills the sport. Too bad football, baseball and basketball players get a pass when they do it coughDerrick Jetercough. To be fair, the ref had a good game. That call is 100% on the assistant ref (well, excluding the player). If the linesmen tells him Besler kicked Campbell (and he trusts his linesman), then he has to give the yellow. Unless there was some preplanned plot, which I guess wouldn't be shocking. I'd love to say the US is above that, but last night Dempsey, our supposed star, was flopping around like a fish. He needs to cut that shit out quick. Oh, and start playing better.

I don't put it on the center official at all, but Campbell is too good of a player for that garbage. CONCACAF and FIFA need to take a lead from MLS and review cards after games on video.

When I first saw this thread I thought it was the new title for the TMNT movie U S Mutant Ninja Turtles

I've just realized that I now enjoy watching/following soccer more than football.

Football is so boring.

If soccer is a really major league sport why are you posting about it in a basketball off-topic board rather than a soccer board? Don't they exist? Or are soccer fans too boring for you? :dunno:
