Victor Claver

So how much will Claver end up costing? Sounds like both him and Freeland will get more then rookie contracts. With the economic slowdown I had thought oversees teams would tighten their pockets.

I'd be very excited with Claver or Freeland on a cheap rookie deal but if either one costs more then $3million I'm not sure I want them to come over.

As reported by me like 2 weeks ago, Victor Claver is parting ways with his Spanish team and heading to the Blazers, according to Quick on the radio

Bad news for Babbitt.

Claver can shoot the ball very well too but has the ability to put the ball on the floor. At 6'10+, we can go for an ultra big lineup:

PG: Lillard - 6'3"
SG: Batum - 6'9"
SF: Claver - 6'10"
PF: Aldridge - 6'11"
C: Hibbert - 7'2"

Noice.

I think you will see that Claver is more of a stretch 4 than a 3

I'm curious if he can demand more than a rookie contract? If we are going to sign him and Freeland to bigger deals it might happen right on July 11th. We could lose our cap room by the 14th if both Hibbert and Nic are here so we probably have to sign the euro's right away.

But if we can get Claver on his rookie contract (which is more dollars than Claver's) that'd be much better as we could sign other free agents first.

I remember hearing that about Freeland, I believe because he would join us after his rookie deal was up or something like that?

Nic knows Vic quite well:

I think so.

That was a year before Nic entered the draft, when Claver was a projected top-10 pick.

I don't have much hope that he'll be better than Babbitt. I hope he proves me wrong.

He has more experience than Babbitt got at lowly Nevada. He'll be what Babbitt will be in a couple of years--Babbitt on steroids. Pretty scary.

Luke's going to take steroids? Who'da thunk it.

Real high on Babbitt, eh?

I think he was saying that as a negative. I view Babbitt as a D-Leaguer. I don't think he should be on an NBA team. With him saying that Claver will not be better than Babbitt, is saying that he is not an NBA talent.

I got high on Babbitt once, lasted at least 36 hours. Woke up missing my eyebrows, with a used tampon in my shirt pocket and a recently fired pistol in my hand.

Hah, I know. I just wanted an opinion on Babbitt. Maybe I'll create my next account as BabbittHoF....

tester551 is right, I was saying it as a negative. Babbitt has one definite NBA skill though, and that's shooting the three. If he has confidence he's probably around the tops in the league at shooting the long ball. Claver seems very well rounded, I'm just skeptical of that type of overall game translating to the NBA well. Again, I hope he proves me wrong.

I think he's also good at finishing, driving, occasionally putting the ball on the ground, and seems to be a good weakside rebounder. There's at least tools to potentially hone in. But I agree, he'd have to put it together pretty quickly and that's probably unlikely. Like you said, hope he proves us wrong.

I think Babbit showed that he's not just a d-leaguer. He shot 43% from 3pt range, and showed tenacity and athletisism (at least in terms of jumping). Being able to shoot like that earns you a spot on most nba benches.

Sounds like a good time for:

They're honestly not particularly similar, at least in game style. Babbitt's deficiencies on defense come from him being rather lumbering of foot. Claver is much more nimble. But Babbitt is (stay with me on this) more of a banger. That is, he'll take the ball inside and try to (honestly) muscle it a bit. Claver is more finesse. Babbitt is just conceivably a stretch 4, but I don't see Claver as anything but a tall SF.

Claver looks as slow, if not slower, than Babbitt to me, and I think he has less hope of being an actual SF than Babbitt. 6'11" guys that aren't very athletic just don't make it as SFs. He'll be a stretch 4 in limited small lineup minutes.
