So why can't mainstream Islam get these people distorting their religion under control? Instead, they make excuses for them.

IMO, none of the three major religions have shown they are deserving of Jerusalem. IMO, it should be a UN protectorate, neither of Palestine nor Israel.

IIRC, Jesus is a prophet in the Koran, he's just not the son of God. Is that correct?

yes he is a prophet, the Quran says the Mary gave birth while still being a virgin. This is said to be an act by God.

I apologize but sometimes ive heard that Jesus is God in human form so "son of god"...not sure what you mean by that term exactly. I dont study religions that much anymore

He is regarded as a prophet in Islam
