Some days I think it really was, and others I think it's the only thing keeping the world from exploding worse.
Yes and no. The early days had some issues, but it also has connected us in ways we never had possible before. For instance, a lifelong friend moves across the country, you can still talk to them and see them! How amazing is that.

I think smart phones are more to blame. So much so, I am considering going back to a flip phone when my contract is up this year. Flip phones allow you to be more in the now, and limits your internet usage down to when you are in front of a computer. I think everyone's loved ones would appreciate it more if we all still had flip phones.

The internet/social media have been the worst fucking thing to happen to civilization since the dawn of said civilization. No argument whatsoever. Irrefutable proof is that we got along just fine without it for tens of thousands of years. All the internet has done is to hasten the timeline of our extinction.

Seriously... I'm with you on this. I don't even trust my smart phone, it seems to read my mind. However, the internet did reward me with the following FAFO this morning exactly when I needed it.

Its the instantness of everything.

I took instagram and Facebook off my apps and have never gone back.

Put roadblocks to it and it works out just fine.

Say it every time somebody mentions this…..Social media isn’t bad at all if you use it the way YOU want to.
I don’t ever read or see any bad shit. Only in here is where I see trump shit or anything hate related. I don’t follow any of that stuff on Twitter or IG. At all!
Only had two old classmates that would post shit on facebook I found objectionable…. Unfollowed that and that’s it. Just like I don’t watch the news. My wife either…..it’s only bad shit, so we cut that out of the rotations.
Social media has allowed me to stay in touch with family around the world and that’s what I love about it.
Social media got my daughter basically $360,000 for school.
Valuable tool if used correctly. You gotta find the bad shit, stop looking for it.

Except when the bad shit is affecting your family/could affect your family. It is hard to put your head in the sand and say whatever happens happens.

Great point

But now that I think about it, that has nothing to do with social media though does it? You don’t have to click on anything like that on social media or watch. Is that what you meant?

Theres a lot of things it can be used for, for sure.

Rare medical conditions are a great way for people all across the globe to connect. Honestly, some of the best stuff can be shared in stuff like that, thats way more valuable than listening to a doctor that hasn't even seen many patients with the condition. But along with stuff like that comes gross shitty comments from people trolling.

But also people do use social media to follow the latest news on things. Its how people see the stuff in Minnesota happening, or whoever the next group of marginalized people that is going to be treated poorly.

Not trying to be snarky. Just seemed anomalous. Like watching basketball while saying watching sports is a waste of time.
I understand completely. You were simply pointing out the obvious. I guess my point should have been more specific. I just think that, in addition to the flood of disinformation, it has exponentially amplified and spread the worst instincts of humanity. It has certainly made it much easier to scam and manipulate people.

The net is like getting into a car and going wherever you want w/o limitations for the most part. Like anything w/o moderation you can get sucked in.
When I drive to the gym in the am I see kids standing at the bus stop with their heads down in their phones.

If someone thinks Internet and social media are the worst things that ever happened, why are they saying so on internet social media site?
The question was a little more nuanced than that... it's about the internet being a double edge sword.

Yes, we have access to a lot of information that's communicated to millions of people instantly, but don't know if it's true. Yes, it makes us more efficient, but it eliminates jobs and isolates people. Yes, we can bank online and pay for things instantly, but our identity can be stolen and finances ruined. Yes, social media is great for keeping in touch with friends/family members who don't live close, but it can also send young people down the path of eating disorders/extreme insecurity or radicalize them to the point they will pick up long guns and assassinate strangers.

In other words like many innovations it has positive and negative effects. Like mass production. Supermarkets. Etc.
Exactly! And I've gotten to the point where I have to limit my consumption of "news" because I get so outraged by what is happening it paralyzes me. I know it doesn't do that to everyone, but I get to the point I don't know how to process my emotions and just need to shut it down.
