I didn't read the whole article yet but as far as we know his twin isn't gay correct? I guess twins don't share everything.

Sorry, that sounds like a bad joke but didn't mean it that way...

Late last summer Jason called and said that he was coming over because he had something to tell me. This was nothing new. We speak multiple times a day, always have. He's Tio Jason to my three kids. He's like a brother to my wife. He's my twin, eight minutes older. We live only a few miles apart on the west side of L.A. But while most of our conversations are quick and light, this one was different.

"What's going on?" I asked.

He sat down in my living room.

"Jarron," he said, "I gotta talk to you about something serious."

He was very simple and matter-of-fact.

"Jarron, I'm gay."

"You're what?"

I won't lie. I had no idea. We talked, he answered my questions, I hugged him and I digested what he had told me. At the end of the day, this is what matters: He's my brother, he's a great guy, and I want him to be happy. I'll love him and I'll support him and, if necessary, I'll protect him.

What does Jason want out of this? He wants to live his life. He wants a relationship, he wants a family, he wants to settle down. He wants to move forward with his personal life while maintaining his life as a professional basketball player. That's all, really.

This announcement will be surprising to some people. I already anticipate the questions: "Are you the gay twin or the straight one?" This is uncharted territory, and no one can predict how it will play out. It's a big deal -- but it's also not a big deal. When the media crush is over, Jason will have the strength to deal with whatever challenges come from being openly gay.

As for us, we're still going to give each other grief. (He's still going to be a terrible golfer; he's still the guy who could help more with changing my kids' diapers.) We'll still be competitive in our way. As kids we were always pushing each other, whether it was for good grades or for possession of the remote control. As NBA players we both wanted to be stronger, so each summer we would have a "liftoff" to see who could put up more weight.

Today, Jason has taken a huge weight off his shoulders. And I've never been more proud of him.

Very well-written "coming out" article. Classy dude. Awesome that he came out during free agency--any team that signs him knows what they are in for in terms of locker room potential problems/PR problems/heckling. He could have easily came out after getting his contract signed, locked in his money. Guys got big balls that I'm sure deserve the fondling whatever man gives them.

I'll probably take heat for this, but so much for genetic factors. I'm pretty sure there have been twin studies that show this as well.

What ever happened with the other big guy who came out? I think he was retired at that point, right? It will be interesting to see how people deal with it.

John Amaechi. I think he had just retired before coming out but someone else can confirm.

Yeah, I remember the SI piece on him. One of his former teammates was asked if he suspected, and he said something like, "We always thought he was a little different. But we just figured it was because he was English."

I love that quote. Makes me laugh every time.

I think being gay as a genetic thing, isn't black and white. Just like obesity and heart disease and cancer. It is a predisposition.

e:please do not associate being gay as a negative because I listed negatives. =\

Good for him for being so brave. Hopefully the talk of 4 current NFLers coming out is true and hopefully one day an athlete coming out isn't seen as something that is newsworthy.

And I'm sure your wife laughs along with you...

What about right/left-handedness? Aren't there sets of identical twins that have different dominant hands? Does anyone claim that that's not an inherent characteristic, that lefties aren't born that way?

"Next on Sports Center, what does Jason Collins' decision to come out mean for the Lakers and Tim Tebow?"

Glad that jason Collins can live openly and free and I wish the best for him.

Its dumb that in the 21st century this is even news. I care about if these guys are good basketball players, not if they are gay or straight. As should everyone else. I hope my kids can grow up where this stuff isnt news and people dont judge sexual orientation.

It is interesting (and sad) that he is 35 years old and his twin brother never knew? Talk about keeping a secret. Man that had to be tough to hide all those years.

Stein tweeted that there a bunch of real bad comments at the bottom of the article, but I checked and can't find them. Props to this guy, wish him luck.
