Did Boston basically give him to us for free because they fleeced us so bad in that June Holiday deal?

It sure feels like it in hindsight
I think they just didn't have room for him. And when he would come in for just a few minutes he would probably try to do too much.

Dalano's 25th birthday is coming up on the 7th of November, 2024

Here's a little review of his basketball life so far:

Banton is the son of a Jamaican father and Canadian mother.[2] He grew up in the Mount Olive area in the Rexdale neighbourhood of Toronto.

He played for Western Kentucky (2018-19) and Nebraska (2020-2021). He sat out the 2019-2020 season "and honed his skills with the scout team."

On December 17, 2020, Banton recorded just the second triple-double in Nebraska men's basketball history with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in Nebraska's 110–64 win over Doane University.

Banton was drafted with the 46th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors, making him the first-ever Canadian to be drafted by the franchise.

On November 24, 2022, Banton scored a career-high 27 points, alongside four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks, in a 115–111 win over the Detroit Pistons.

In July 2023, Banton signed a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics.

On February 8, 2024, Banton was traded, along with cash, to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for a protected second-round pick.[19] On March 27, Banton scored a new career-high 31 points along with 5 rebounds and 9 assists in a 120–106 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.[20]

In Portland's season finale against the Sacramento Kings on April 14, Banton went 0–for–15 on shots beyond the arc. In doing so, he became the first player in NBA history to attempt as many three–point shots without a make.

What Banton has done shooting-wise this season is way out of wack with his previous averages.

Is he just on a hot streak? Or has his game changed somehow? I hope he gets some more playing time just to find out.

It would be crazy if this same guy just started throwing up bricks, but he's already in the NBA record books as the most epic 3-point bricklayer ever. :dunno:

I don't think his 3 pt % will hold up but I think he might be able to maintain an above average 2 pt. %

Loved Dalano from jump, people calling him a chucker while we tanked were annoying.
He is a chucker, but in the most positive sense of the word. He is endlessly aggressive, continuously putting pressure on the defense. He has a mentality that (unfortunately) cannot be taught. I wish we could put his brain in Sharpe's body. Well, probably his ligaments too...

He is averaging 6.3 FGA in 10.3 min/gm this season ... the only other Blazer that is close to that in shots per minute is Ant at 16 FGA in 32 min/gm. Last year he was a little over the FGA for every 2 minutes on the floor threshold. He is the definition of a chucker!

I've came around on Banton, he's been by far the best PG on this team and deserves to start.

I thought he was a scrub but he's proven me wrong.

I think he is the best so far, which isn't saying much. He's in a contract year, and is fighting for his NBA life, which i think causes him to call his own number a lot. He's averaging almost 20 shots per 36, but has a better than average TS%.

I'd like Simons to go so we get a longer look at him this year.

Hey @speeds - changed your view on Banton yet?
Who started calling him D.B. Hooper, that's hilarious...

His line looks ridiculous; let's push this a few months. If Toronto Mans turns into a 6-8 Jamal Crawford I would be pretty happy about it TBH.

I think it was reddit... But not 100% sure

I've become a Banton believer. He was good last year when the team was losing and half the players were out due to injury. But this year he's performing at a high level with the team winning games.

Here's some fun stats:
He's increased his scoring per 36 every year, and is at career highs for Ast/36, Stl/36, FG%, and 3P%

And he's 1st on the team in VORP -

I'm not saying he's an all-star or anything, but I think he's proven he deserves some solid rotation minutes if not even starting.

I think the Blazers best unit is:
- D Banton
- S Sharpe
- T Camara
- J Grant
- R Williams III

That's a solid balance of offense and defense.

I think the Blazers found themselves a diamond in the rough. Let's get DB Hooper more playing time!

Agreed, that is the best 5 man unit, although I wouldn't start Timelord since he has to sit B2B and limit his minutes. This would be the rotation I'd like to see;

Banton - Scoot
Sharpe
Camara - Rupert
Grant - Deni
Clingan - Timelord

Billups simply has to give him 30 min a night. Shae, DB, Scoot, Tamara all need 30+. Klingon, Rupert, Murray 20 or so.

Scoot should not be in that first group - dude isn't an NBA level player at all right now. I'd still leave him in the rotation and depending on game flow maybe he gets to that 30 minutes for some games but he shouldn't be guaranteed anything until his play improves.

Also if DB and Shae are getting 30mpg its going to be hard to also get Scoot there... I'd set the first two with bigger roles first for now. If Scoot play gets closer to Banton level then re-evaluate, but right now he is clearly the inferior player.

I am a Banton fan. I like having that taller PG. However, I am curious to see what happens when teams apply pressure late in games who have scouted him. Granted few PGs can handle a double team so there always needs to be 2 other players on the court that can help out (Shae, Deni, or Simons) So maybe he is best as the secondary ball handler and not the starting PG that a few are wanting. I guess there is only one way to find out.

With Sharpe, Deni, Rupert, etc I think we're pretty good using a team approach to pass and break any of that pressure. We don't have any Aminu wing types that can't dribble which makes this much easier to solve. I agree that it is something to monitor. If its becomes an area opponents are exploiting then we can get Scoot extra minutes or such.

OKC might be the best team at applying pressure and forcing steals, especially now that they go small with Chet injured, so we can see how this looks tomorrow.
