I may have posted this graph before but it is pretty amazing. 100 years ago, almost a million people were coal miners.

I was reading about this this morning....same article. Plastics do come from many sources that include petroleum products....coal can be used but it mostly used for tar, ashphalt, and in steel manufacturing.....and is used for heating and cooking in some countries but that is becoming less and less common. interestingly enough....Trump before becoming president was heavily invested in the steel industry...soybeans are used to make plastics....if you have a car from the 50s or before it probably had a steering wheel made from soybean plastic....Taiwan leads the world in plastic production or did in the past and they do not use coal products to make plastic...they do use petroleum though.https://www.plasticsmakeitpossible.com/about-plastics/types-of-plastics/what-are-plastics/
The raw materials for today’s plastics come from many places (some even use salt!), but most plastics can be made from the hydrocarbons that are readily available in natural gas, oil and coal.

The manufactured or synthetic plastics are often designed to mimic the properties of natural materials. Plastics, also called polymers, are produced by the conversion of natural products or by the synthesis from primary chemicals generally coming from oil, natural gas, or coal.
...
The raw material formation may begin by separating the hydrocarbon chemicals from natural gas, petroleum, or coal into pure streams of chemicals.
Also:Yes... old coal plants are being retired, and new coal plants aren't being built. It is unlikely that demand for coal is going to increase domestically. Maybe we can dig it up and ship it to China for them to burn, but they have their own coal mines.
