Wes not ready - Maybe by Christmas

Wes did end up with a max contract but only because DeAndre backed out of his deal. When the Mavs offered Wes a contract DeAndre had committed to sign there. At that time the Mavs told Wes they'd give him all the money they had the ability to pay him. It only ended up being a max contract when DeAndre left and the Mavs had additional cap space.

So DeAndre double fucked the Mavs; he left them and it made Wes' contract far more expensive.

What a dumb mistake. Management painted themselves into a corner by offering a variable, not fixed, amount. That's smart only when it might go down, not up.

Go Wes! I'll give Cuban credit, he said his offer to Wes could work out great or be the next Tracy McGrady move of the season

We should have resigned him.. Believe it or not, I could care less if LMA left (although of course I wish we traded him) but letting Wes go was the biggest one that hurt we should have resigned Wes to what he wanted. Mind you we aren't even in a hurry for this year he could have taken his time even taken the year off if need be. Looking at these videos makes me wish we resigned him and moved forward with a DAME and WES future..

Hes looking damn good and hes not even close to being fully healthy.

From what I saw in those two videos there's nothing showing me he's looking good...he looks sluggish and slow..which is to be expected

Wes probably didn't want to sign here for a rebuild, who knows though. Him leaving definitely stings the most.

Teams can offer partially guaranteed contracts. Cuban chose not to.
You think Wes or any other player would sign a partially guaranteed contract? In my opinion teams should have options should big contracts on players in these types of situations don't work out. Maybe not right away but they should have some options.

Sure they will if that is the only contract offered to them.

Would you sign a partially guaranteed contract if a fully guaranteed contract were available?

Such as? What options do you think teams should have on large contacts that wouldn't overwhelmingly provide advantages to the richest owners?

Make the players pay for their own medical care, then the incidents of fake injuries will go away.

No way man; fake injuries pay. Wes' fake injury got him a max deal. Any chance he gets that deal if we lose in the first round while Wes is actually on the floor? No way. Wes faked that achilles to show everyone how bad we were without him.

I reacted right away when he said he wanted 15mil and to be the go to guy on offense...then started doing Laker talk show host all summer. I love Wes but he didn't do us any favors this time around

Why should he? Yes we gave him more money than anyone expected him to get to bring him out of Utah, but over the course of that deal, he became underpaid.

And it's not as if we even offered him a deal this offseason, so why should he be expected to do us favors?

His demands weren't us asking him favors...he did what was best for him and I don't fault him for it but never would have given him 70mil for 4 years.

I'm sure the fans would go wild....

Me neither; when he said he wanted X dollars, he priced himself out of Portland, probably on purpose.
I don't think there ever would have been an offer to Wes unless LaMarcus decided to stay. If LaMarcus stayed, Wes would have been paid whatever it took to keep him.

I would have been STOKED. Wes is my favorite ex-Blazer still playing.

It is Matthews' karma which keeps getting him overpaid.

Subliminal tapes telling you how indestructible you are...do they make them for NBA players?

On the topic of guaranteed vs unguaranteed contracts, what if each team was only allowed to tender one guaranteed contract offer every other year* - all other contracts would be unguaranteed.

*I'm not sure why I suggested every other year. Perhaps to reward teams/GMs who are able to plan ahead? Perhaps to limit the number of guaranteed contracts in the league?

I want a true minor league system in the NBA with every team able to bring guys in and send guys down to the minors without risking losing roster spots. More players on rosters, not a lot but more...nobody wears a suit unless injured. You could keep guys from summer league and get the end of the bench guys playing time when they weren't getting minutes. Would be even better if the Blazers minor league team was based in Eugene~!

Wes is an undrafted FA who had a lot of potential, but had some obvious flaws. He was a hard enough worker to overcome them.

We signed Wes Matthews as he was, his name is Cliff Alexander.

and we got him a lot healthier cheaper than today's model.
