Curious how you define it as a western. I always thought of a western as made back in the days of horses and cowboys.
Me too, cup. A modern Western is more like just a modern story set in the Western United States. A true Western is set in the old West.

There are some movies placed in the following categories: revisionist, contemporary, and neo western.

I just looked it up in wikipedia. Saw the cast. Love Tom Waits and Liam Neeson but can't stand Tyne Daly.
Interesting looking story but I really prefer the older classics.
I also looked up the Cohen brothers.
The best movies by the Cohen brothers in my book are Fargo and O Brother Where Art Thou with No Country for Old Men being in third place, both of the best two movies were nominated for several awards and won quite a few of those. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was nominated for just a few awards and won none.
No Country for Old Men? Nominated for many awards and won many of those.

Blazing Saddles...funniest western ever made!

The Night of the Grizzly

Red River and The Ox Bow Incident

I also enjoyed their version of True Grit.

Looking forward to watching a couple of fairly new westerns, The Sisters Brothers and The Dark Valley.

Just saw the Sisters Brothers last night. Expected a fun natured comedy (been so used to seeing John C Reilly in comedies). Not really a comedy. A good movie. The pace feels too slow at times. Phoenix is of course the unhinged one. Reilly can kill some son of a bitches just the same though. Don't fuck with the Sisters Brothers.

The mini series “Godless” on Netflix is really good. The remake of True Grit was awesome. The Revenant was badass also.

If we're going with mini-series, I'll take "Lonesome Dove". Robert Duvall was great as Gus.

Of course, the line, "Thanks for the poke, Lorie darlin'" kind of gave a new twist to the meaning of "cowpoke".

Duvall was pretty good in Open Range

Robert Duvall is a superb actor, especially in Westerns.
