No I mean if we just attach pick to dump a deal. Nothing in return.

Last year people wanted us to attach two firsts to trade away ET or Meyers. I didn't get that either. Attaching picks to shed contracts makes sense if you are trying to create cap space to sign players into (like Nets have done with Crabbe, or Knicks with Hardaway Jr and Lee). If all you want is to get rid of a player just so he doesn't play, it's a bad move.

We would get a trade exception.

But I agree, that would be a stupid move.

I was staying out of it because technically they are both right.

Trading away a contract doesn't open up cap space. It could possibly give the team the higher MLE but that still depends on what we do with guys like Aminu and Layman.

Besides, this conversation is a little pointless when teams aren't going to waste cap space before this free agency period for the 25th pick.

Yet again coming back to the drum I've been beating for at least a decade now. Why the hell is the draft before free agency?

The time to trade our pick with a contract was at the trade deadline, if we were going that route. Without giving an offer a team couldn't refuse (i.e. the Nets giving up two 1sts for one year of Crabbe) there isn't a super realistic way to cut salary other than to wait at least 10 days after free agency dies down and do what Denver did last year. That's most likely too late though for the purposes we need to clear money for.

I definitely misspoke saying "cap-space", but they could, in theory, open up the full MLE, which was the point I was trying to make.

Zag when everyone Zigs. Trade 25 and our unprotected 1st in the Outstanding and Amazing and Unprecedented 2003-wannabe 2021 draft for the #5 pick in a "3 person" draft.

Draft a rookie version of Rodney Hood whoever that is ..2 way player....

They will go with the best defender in the draft! Thybulle

Cause that's what the Blazers do
not normally except maybe Collins, but hoping this year is different and instead of bpa go for the guy that commands respect on the D side of the ball.

Meh. He only works if you think he will be an actual 3-and-D guy. If he is just another good-motor-can't-shoot guy, then even in this draft we have a chance to do better.
I don't think it this guy I believe it will shooter just last year he going out to find shooters. Maybe loosing Curry and Hood it will a shooter it has Windler writing all over it.

maybe. I remember Gary Payton couldn't shoot a lick when he entered the pros but after couple years and he improve big time.

The same could be said about Jason Kidd. Not to be contrarian, but we are talking a different style of play and a much different level of talent.

I predict that we will buy a 2nd rounder to get Jaylen Hoard. And I would love this move.

Obviously, there was an element of luck involved - but it seems the Blazers got it right by keeping the pick. I'm going to give Olshey the benefit of the doubt that he anticipated it was going to be a weird night and that some very respectable talent would be available in the mid 20s.

Kwahi Leonard wasn't a good 3 point shooter coming out of college (25% at the college line), but has developed into a very good one and clutch as well.

Hoard's future in Portland will depend on his defense. I know his shooting percentage is low from 3, but he has a good looking shot. Stotts and his staff have been very good at making poor shooters become decent and decent shooters become good. With a little coaching and a ton of shots with the assistants, he'll be a good shooter. He can create off the dribble and is a good passer.
I think the FO is hoping he can become Harkless/Aminu on defense with more diversity on offense. Even coming close to that would be a success for a non-drafted FA.

I bet the Blazers will keep the pick and draft Nassir Little.
