What happened to Nurkic?

I don't care who did or didn't play. If you don't play with effort you don't play in the game.
No Portland player showed effort last night.
Players and Coaches rightfully deserve some heat.

Oh sorry they played with effort for the first 6 minutes of the 4th quarter.
You know when the Nets were throwing up airballs, having turnovers... You know things bad teams do when you play defense against them.

Nurk scoring 21 points in 3 quarters isn't "effort" to you?

Really?

Pray tell....what IS effort, then?

I've read that Vanterpool was apparently yelling at Nurk for not playing drives on defense the way he was supposed to/ playing poor defense for much of the third quarter. And apparently Nurk wasn't listening. Has anyone else seen this being said? If it's true, I can kinda see where Stotts is coming from. The biggest issue I've seen with Nurk is that the dude can start feeling himself and taking bad shots/playing lazy defense. That being said, it seems like something that should be emphasized after the game.

Sure Nurk was having a good offensive game but what was he doing on the other end? I definitely saw some matador defence not just by Nurk but almost everyone on the roster. All comes back down to accountability. Sounds like Vanderpool called out Nurk for his lack of effort on the defensive end. He should be commended for that because the head coach would never do that.

you do that to Nurkic, you better do that to Dame, CJ and rest of the guys
no double standards man

that shit sounds to me like they expecting only Nurk to play defense, cause he can and cause majority of our players sucks at it, they dont have to do it

if you can play defense - we gonna yell at you when youre not playing it right, but if you cant play defense - you get a free pass

Nurk (and Davis) were consistently left on an island against guards. That's either on coaching or our own backcourt.

Who was playing in the 3rd quarter when the Blazers got killed?
We actually won the 4th quarter.

This reminds me of the Clippers under Bill Fitch when they were threatening the worst record in HISTORY and their "best" player was probably Pooh Richardson. Fitch was so disgusted at the five on the floor that he just picked 5 people off the bench and sent them in and sat EVERYBODY. The team nearly came back to win with guys who probably wouldn't've made the D-League all-stars. It was great. Of course Fitch could do that because he was a crusty old bastard who had zero fucks left to give.

Maybe it would be good to have ONE backcourt starter who's at least half-decent on D? Look at how the Pistons got Avery Bradley and suddenly they're no longer a sad-sack team.

Why didn’t Nurkic play in the fourth?

“I thought with their small lineup, I thought defensively we were giving up too much when he was in the game and I liked Ed’s athleticism.”

you fucking motherfucker, even so, defense was shit with Ed Davis too, but guess what, Nurk was our best offensive player you dumb fuck, so if were bad in defense with Ed Davis too and he cant score on offense, YOU BRING NURKIC BACK to score some shit on offense and Im pretty sure hed do some shit on defense too, small lineup or whatever, hes youre best defensive player you prick

and its not just Ed Davis, Dame & CJ couldnt do shit on offense, so you basically had no offense... god he was out of his depth, or to be exact, he is for the whole season now

You are misreading Stotts. He's saying "Nurkic repeatedly failed to do what we asked on D so I sat his ass down."
Of course he knows Nurkic is good on O. But actually, not necessarily better than Davis:

are you even serious right now... Im missreading Stotts, but guess what, so does big majority of our fans and were wrong, but you understand what he said just right, ok then... Nurk not necessarily better than Ed Davis on offense, my god... I dont know why even Im replying to you

ANYONE who thinks that Nurk was the problem last night is a fucking moron.

And anybody who thinks that anyone not named Terry Stotts costed us that game is also a fucking moron.

Apparently one of the symptoms of Nurk Fever is blaming the coach when we underwhelm.
You should expect Coach blaming, we could be 17-1 and there is are quiet a few vocal posters who would be saying that one loss is on Stotts and he needs to be replaced. I'm not saying Stotts doesn't need to be replaced but from reading this forum last year it shouldn't come as a shock that Stotts will be one of the scapegoats this year regardless if he is the problem or not.

I don't really care what Portland does on the offensive end. Never really have as they're a good enough offensive team to beat anyone.
Defensively however I saw the entire roster standing and watching. Too busy not getting back on defense, not closing out, and letting defensive rebounds hit the floor. Or worse yet, watching a Net get an offensive rebound on a put back.
However I can look past the rebounding. My big issue is watching straight line drives from the Nets out of the pick and roll.
That's on Stotts, that's on the players, that's on the entire coaching staff.

The Nets are a drive and kick team. You better be ready to defend against that, it's not complicated. Close the fuck out, move your feet.
Portland frankly only played well for 6 minutes last night on the defensive end. Rest of the game was utter garbage and it's on the players for lack of effort, and coaching staff for lack of preparation/unwillingness to sit people down.

I just got done reffing, and coaching after it. I saw more effort from middle & high school kids than I saw last night from adults being paid to play basketball.
The entire organization showed up last night expecting to win. 'Oh it's the Nets they suck, we can just go through the motions and win the game NPNP'.
Fuck that noise.

The only time I'll ever complain about watching the Blazers is when they don't give effort on the defensive end. Last night I had many complaints.
(there is a reason why I hate watching Nards play basketball, he half asses everything and is only into the game when he wants to be.)

Fair enough. Personally, I believe it's kind of hard for your Center to play Defense when he's doing it all alone, and when he's not playing in the 4th.

But that's just me.

Last night was on Stotts. Not the team. The team has a lot that we should hold them accountable for. However, last night was not one of them.

Nurk was coasting on D, and was told multiple times to correct it, and he didn't. Let's see if he sulks and tries to pout his way out of town again. I really hope he learned his lesson and responds with greater effort and focus this time, not with petulance and victim-whining...

Well you don't call out one player not playing D when other guys on the team playing half ass too. Coaching staff going piss this big guy and sign big ass contract to make Olshey either match or let him go. But Stotts D philosophy it not good with the players he has and he refuse to change up.

We will find out how great a leader that Dame is because it will take him to keep Nurk head on straight.

If Vanterpool is calling Nurk out on defense (which I applaud), is he also calling out Dame and CJ? I haven't heard that yet so until he does that to the biggest offenders, I'm not that impressed.

I saw him call out Lillard during a different game(this year) when Lillard decided pointing and telling his teammates to switch was more important than fighting over the screen.
Other team hit a shot, Vanterpool was instantly up and telling Lillard that was unacceptable. Lillard to his credit was listening and it didn't happen again the rest of the game.

If what you describe is true, Vanterpool should be promoted immediately. X’s and O’s, to me, are less important than a coach who will hold all his players accountable for their effort night in and night out.

Thank you for sharing. I hadn't seen that but it is good to hear.

I want to say it was in the Memphis game?
I'm not sure. I just know I said towards my tv. 'wtf kind of defense is that'.
Then I was dumbstruck because I saw a coach stand up and start talking to Lillard, with Lillard paying attention.
As that's not something you normally see in the NBA, let alone on the Blazers.
Figured out after the game it was Vanterpool via google. As I don't really know who the assistant coaches of any team are.

I'm also still waiting for Nurkic to back up his "I think this team can be a bad boy team" comments.
