Affluenza..... What THE ACTUAL FUCK....

Ethan Couch, ‘Affluenza Teen’ Who Killed 4 While Driving Drunk, Is Freed

Ethan Couch, whose trial for killing four people while driving drunk sparked widespread conversations about the privilege of being raised wealthy, was released from a Texas jail on Monday after nearly two years.

Mr. Couch, 20, became known as the “affluenza teen” after a psychologist suggested during his trial that growing up with money might have left him with psychological afflictions, too rich to tell right from wrong. He attracted further attention when he and his mother, Tonya Couch, fled to Mexico in an effort to evade possible jail time.

He served his 720-day sentence in a jail in Tarrant County, and was freed about a week before his 21st birthday.

Ms. Couch, 50, had been freed on bond while awaiting trial on a felony charge of hindering apprehension. But she was arrested last week after the authorities said she failed a drug test, violating the conditions of her bond, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Mr. Couch was 16 in June 2013 when he and a group of friends stole beer from a store and had a party at his parents’ house before going for a drive. He struck and killed four people on the side of a road near Burleson, Tex., a Fort Worth suburb, and a passenger in his car was paralyzed and suffered brain damage.

He had a blood alcohol level of 0.24, three times the legal limit in Texas, hours after the crash.

He pleaded guilty in 2013 to four counts of manslaughter and a juvenile court judge sentenced him to 10 years of probation, defying prosecutors who sought a 20-year prison sentence. The victims’ families were outraged, and critics felt he got special treatment because of his wealth.

In December 2015, a six-second video that appeared to show Mr. Couch at a party where alcohol was served — a possible parole violation — was posted on Twitter. Two weeks later, he and his mother went missing.

They were arrested about two weeks later, about 1,200 miles away in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they had changed their appearances and ditched their identifications. Mr. Couch was brought back to Texas and placed in juvenile detention, while his case was moved to adult court.

In April 2016, Dee Anderson, Tarrant County’s sheriff, said Mr. Couch had created “zero issues” since beginning his jail stint that January.

“I do believe Ethan Couch is not the same person he was when he came to jail,” he said. “The time he’s spent, it’s a rude awakening for anyone.”

Under the terms of his probation, Mr. Couch will not be permitted to drive or drink alcohol, and cannot leave the Fort Worth area without approval from probation or court officials. He must look for a job and perform community service.

In a statement, Mothers Against Drunk Driving said it was “small consolation” that Mr. Couch would remain on probation.

“Two years in jail for four people killed is a grave injustice to the victims and their families who have been dealt life sentences because of one person’s devastating decision to drink and drive,” the organization said. “The 720 days Ethan Couch served for his crimes shows that drunk driving homicides still aren’t treated as the violent crimes that they are.”

Harlem ain't Texas.....anyone who's grown up in America knows damned well this rich kid is getting away with murder...ran away from the crime to a foreign country with mommy and changed his appearance...yeah....that didn't quite happen in New York City.....easy to get to Mexico from Texas...fucking lawyers can interfere with justice for anyone who can pay the big bucks

Judges don't ever give people of color light sentences...nope, never.
Of course they do, but it’s a numbers game. It’s easy to choose one here or there. But look at the aggravates. Percent of jailed population of different ethnicities. Length of time of similar crimes in aggregate.

When it comes to affluenza there may be a couple things going on. It might be that the white kid is viewed differently then the Black kid, or it could be a numbers game, more super wealthy whites means that many more chances for the affluenza defense. But I can find a single example of that defense being used to defend a black kid.

I didn't follow it that closely but I bet money the kid's family knows someone.

That the justice system isn't fair has been obvious to all of us for decades.

But there are a couple types of unfair that may be at work here. One type may the the one eluded to by @dviss1, the racial component. The other unfair component may simply be the rich vs non type where justice can be bought. Both or just one may be in play in this case.

But why is the first reaction in a thread like this to point out - Whites too? There can certainly be a valid discussion on this topic, but it’s hard to do that when the initial response just seems purely dismissive.

Because the thread title was "what if he was black?"

So instead of trying to answer that, you switch it to - blacks get off easy too

It’s a valid question, what if he were black? He would have to come from an Uber-rich family, would it go down differently?

I hate how you come in here and defend idiocy... It's like all the time. You bring some small size bullshit to "prove a point" that you're not proving.

How come you ALWAYS see that side and don't even attempt to see it another way?

This MF got off because he's white and rich (fucking affluenza????????????????????) and you just can't bring yourself to admit it.

You Would NEVER trade the way you're treated in society for the way we are.

Not even if they were murdered FOR being Trans? Yeah sorry, I care more about victims of hate crimes because those are TOTALLY preventable. So... There's that...

He doesn't want to discuss that. He wants to justify it by deflecting the question and retreating to his safe enclave of "let me Google some shit to try to prove a point when the numbers have never backed my stance".

It's his go to response.

Of course I wouldn't. I've told you that a million times.

I googled black guy got light sentence and had tons to choose from.

I don't think they're preventable. There are core reasons why people commit acts of violence.

1) Money

2) Crime of passion (IE walking in on your wife with another man)

3) Hatred - which to me is a byproduct of something else. If you are willing to kill someone because they're black or they're trans or a Jew or whatever, there's something deeper wrong with you. I'm sure there are plenty of racists out there that would never kill or harm someone..... they're just racist pieces of shit and they judge people based on their skin, but that doesn't make them take the jump to violence. It's the same with school shooters. Millions upon millions of people are bullied every year, but only a few will pick up a gun or a knife and lash out.

So to me, there's just crazy pieces of shit who harm others, whether it's because they're another color, or they're gay, or whatever...... there's no fixing that person. They are broken. I am 100% certain that you can cure racism, but you can't cure crazy.

In the past, these crazy fucks would go off to war and die on some battle field. We weeded out the nutjobs because there was a place to send them. This is probably the longest sustained period of peace that we as a race have ever had. Yes, we've had conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan, but we haven't had a major world war that killed millions since the 40s. I personally think that's why we have seen so many shootings and violence. Those people would have been drafted and sent overseas where they could kill to their hearts content, and they'd probably die in combat.
