Russ ive always had a weird love / hate thing going on with his game... He’s one part amazing, its rare to see an athlete play with that much energy basically every night. The dude is pure fire. On the other hand, he can be like the brickMaster4000 sometimes, and his fire can and is used against him way too often. Its like the rage turns on and he just becomes his own worst enemy.Absolutely. Take Russell Westbrook for example. Portland fans hate the dude so much a Triple Double is a bad game.
Exactly my point. I found out in like, I don’t what year, actually it was at the Blazers NBA Draft party the year we took Martell Webster, that there was a place on the internet that you could chat about the Blazers. So that night I joined BBF. I was blown away that you could just sit there and talk hoops with strangers. Been Hooked ever since. This is the only site I visit. There were arguments back then, but now it seems like instead of just having a difference of opinion, so many are outright trying to disprove each other. This thread might not be about you but that sure is a great post.
Blazers are entertainment. S2 is entertainment. I come here to hang and laugh. I work at work.
I guess you know how to get a rise out of him better than I....
Were all just a bunch of basketball geeks with opinions. At the end of the day, from the bottom of the BBIQ to the top, its just opinions. Its why you see so many NBA coaches with different philosophies, theres no perfect plays that scores every time. Theres no perfect mind that gets it right every time.Exactly my point. And as far as it being entertainment, that’s exactly what I use this place for. I go by the eye test. Never look at stats. Haven’t looked at the standings honestly once this season.
Guy said I post nothing but twitter and Instagram links on here like I wasn’t supposed to. Didn’t realize that was looked down upon.
I actually just wanted to see what peoples opinions were on how you measure and prove knowledge.
I have not looked yet either. Could not tell you what place they are in? I do know their record is 5-8 right now from watching games.Haven’t looked at the standings honestly once this season.

i will start looking at standings in march.
7) Have a YouTube a channel.What makes an expert?
1) You need to know something about competition, sports, and basketball in particular.
2) You need to know something about the salary cap.
This is huge, and why it's hard to listen to most "fans." They may have a lot of knowledge about basketball, but their "trade ideas" are ridiculous.
3) You need some sort of critical thinking to go with some basic understanding of logical fallacies.
4) You need to know when to defer to the judgment of others.
What's great about s2 is that we have a ref expert, international scouting expert, salary cap experts, tech experts... We have members who have great insights. We have members who'll spend too much time (imho) tracking down relevant stats and other info.
5) You need to be willing to change your mind.
You need to be willing to admit your mistakes, and move on.
6) You need to have a little fun.
It doesn't matter how much of an expert one is, if they are an asshole, period.
@HCP is really good with 1) and 6), but not great at all of the others. This may be why he was "called out". OTOH, sometimes s2ers are "aggressive", and sometimes s2ers "don't get" his humor.
WHich brings up and interesting point. Does a fans “FANATICISM” interfere with their knowledge of the game? Their hate for another team change their opinion?
Ya see, this is what I expected from you. At what point did I make this about me?"Hi, I'm John Lukrofka and I want attention from a bunch of geeks".
Well said.I don't think there's any doubt when you watch one team more than the rest, you're going to lose some perspective. I think there is a chunk of people who watch the Blazers more than all other 29 teams combined, which would make it hard to evaluate how the roster compares to other teams. Having said that, there is NOTHING wrong with someone who loves the Blazers, doesn't have the time to watch many other NBA games, and has strong opinons.
See, this makes me think you didn't read my post completely. I wasn't the one who questioned your basketball knowledge. I simply pointed out why I could see someone else posting why they think you didn't have much knowledge because you don't drop it on here. I also didn't say your jokes or Twitter posts were a bad thing either.Exactly my point. At what point did I make this about me?
Got called out by some random guy on here in a thread earlier and it got me to thinking.
Right on, I hear you. Ya, if people are using this joint as a measuring stick of basketball IQ, something is very wrong with them.See, this makes me think you didn't read my post completely. I wasn't the one who questioned your basketball knowledge. I simply pointed out why I could see someone else posting why they think you didn't have much knowledge because you don't drop it on here. "Hi, I'm John Lukrofka and I want attention from a bunch of geeks".
But Sly you can plainly see that was the reason why I started the thread. To see what everybody else's opinion was about themselves and what they think of hoop IQ. I didn't ask anybody to give their opinion on me.Ummmm... kinda with your first sentence.
I didn't ask anybody to give their opinion on me.
You haven't given your opinion man. What makes somebody knowledgable? Playing the game, watching the game, studying the game?See, this makes me think you didn't read my post completely. I think he needs to tell someone that they gotta quit having other stuff on the screen when the games going! Lots of missed plays this year has me really questioning their basketball knowledge!I think you're a very nice guy.

Everyone but you on this forum has little to no connections to talking with actual NBA players, coaches, GMs, or whatever. This is all we have man!Right on, I hear you. Ya, if people are using this joint as a measuring stick of basketball IQ, something is very wrong with them.
Ya see, this is what I expected from you. At what point did I make this about me?
I thought it was a cool idea to see why people think they know more than others. What makes somebody an expert. Because somebody comes on here and posts a bunch of stats, do they know more..... as opposed to somebody who coached for 30 years.
Curious why you wouldn't just give your opinion and felt you had to post this.

All the above. Playing the game, even if it is just for fun helps you learn strategies and gives you a sense of just how spectacular some of these guys are. Watching enough basketball is certainly helpful. I've watched every Blazer game since they've all been on TV. That alone makes me pretty knowledgeable about them like most others in here. Studying the game is great but it doesn't do much if you don't know what to look for.You haven't given your opinion man. What makes somebody knowledgable? Playing the game, watching the game, studying the game?
Just had a great conversation on the plane with Assistant Coach John Mccullough. He asked how I got into the business and then I asked him. He told me his story as a college player and as a pro before he got into coaching. I would consider him an old school Xs and Os coach as opposed to an analytics type. I don't think you can get a coaching job and stay in the league without having tons of hoop knowledge. But you also have to have opportunities right?@THE HCP
Im kind of curious, you run in basketball circles as a Job. You talk with players and coaches and scouts at least once in a while. BBIQ has to come up here and there how do they judge it?
They can come on the internet and laugh and say we dont know what were talking about it and that may be true, but tomorrow they could get fired and it might question if they know what they’re talking about right?
Anyways, has it come up, like when they’re evaluating a coaches performance or a scout, or determining if you know what a basketball is, what do you think they’re looking for?

No one would ever get hired off the streets with no coaching experience so yeah connections are everything.Just had a great conversation on the plane with Assistant Coach John Mccullough. What if you are a childhood friend of somebody who grew up a coach and he gets you a job on his staff. Can you obtain knowledge by osmosis? (I had to look that up)
Do you naturally getting smarter about the game by being in coaches meetings and clinics.....one would hope.
What do you think?
