OT What NBA players will "break out" this season?

I think Tatum's going to be a big part of the Celtics as a rookie. Someone opposing teams need to gameplan for.
I disagree. Count me as a Tatum skeptic: he struck me as a bit of a black hole, and Stevens will want a good defender, something he didn't demonstrate he was.

ALSO: I think "breakout" by its very nature requires that you have played in the NBA before. Rookies don't count, and I include Ben Simmons in this.

Dribble to save your life,
Finish strong at the basket,
Rebound for shit,
Play anything that looks remotely like Defense,
Create your own shot,
and then teams game plan for your weaknesses for the first time in your career,
You just described Drazen Petrovic heading for the Nets.

You could not be more wrong. Drazen had a great handle, could finish in traffic and could create for others. Crabbe can do none of these things.

Here's a small sample:

Yeah, it's a highlight video, sure, but find me a highlight video of Allen Crabbe beating his man off the dribble, going behind the back and finishing in traffic at the rim. Go ahead, do it! Drazen did it multiple times in that video.

Can I vote for Nurk? He semi "broke out" after the trade, but the injury stopped a full fledged "break out" season.

Nurk IS going to have one. I think we all expect him to that's why nobody's talking about it. Why the league isn't, well, we know why.

With starters minutes, a full offseason of working out, more familiarity with the playbook, going through a whole training camp and preseason, and being in a contract year, I predict Nurk's line to be:

PPG: 18+
RPG: 10+
APG: 4
BPG: 2.5
SPG: 1.5
FG%: .570
MPG: 33+

IMHO this is a modest prediction but I'm predicting an MIP season for The Big Nurk.

Bullshit. You must have no clue how he played. Petro created his own shot all the time. Petro could dribble and go to the basket. GTFO

Jamal Murray, Jusuf Nurkic and Myles Turner would be my picks.

How did Meyers Leonard not make that list?

Rasta's point was before Petrovic went to NJ - which we did not see a lot of in his Blazers career - but all you really have to do is look for his Euroleague tapes from the Cibona days to see that he had the handles and the ability to attack the basket (he certainly was more comfortable creating space for a jump-shot - but he still had the handles).

Jeez, don't anger the Petro fans! Okay, okay, I'm sorry! Crabbe is no Petro! But it is also true that Drazen had a historically low rebound rate and makes Crabbe look like Bruce Bowen on defense.

Funny, I thought I was supposed to be the Euro-lover...

Wait, I think..
I don't think Crabbe is going to become Petro. But I do think he's going to be given more opportunity to do things that he didn't for Stotts. He may crash and burn - we shall see.

Find me those highlights from his Blazers days.

Hood is a great candidate.

If Nurk plays like he did with us last season then he will have what could be considered a breakout season

Jaylen Brown has a logjam but if he gets minutes he could have a nice season.

Buddy Heild and Skal Labissier for the Kings.

The point was that Petro did show a lot of the things that he did when playing in NJ when playing in Europe - where I am not certain that AC ever did, even in his college career.

Nurk's Per 36 numbers are right in line with my prediction.

On another note can anyone tell me how to share those tables from basketball reference? I see posters doing that all the time.

Here's Crabbe in SL the year he was the featured player (he got injured after about one game). I think you'll see more like this if he knows he's the starter and he's got the green light:

You're not vindicated. You should've known he had handles, could attack the basket, and create for others. Saying you didn't see it on the Blazers doesn't save you. :D

Yawn... I saw that. I watched every minute of every one of those SL games. Still no handles. Still not creating his own shot.

Well then I hereby retract my Thank You.

I think he showed it in Summer League (not the passing, sure, but a much more varied offensive game than critics like BNM are wont to argue), which is probably a good deal above the level of Petro's Yugo League.

Generally I just use the snipping tool and paste the image.

Fine. Still better at defense and rebounding than Petro. By about the same degree.

The difference with Petro is that he believed he was the best player in the universe, whereas Crabbe is a lot meeker. But that's what a change of scenery does for you. I don't think it'll be to Jermaine O'Neal degrees, but I think he'll up his per 40 numbers. Let's see who's right.

And Crabbe has always had the green light.

I have nothing against Crabbe - if there was an easy way to find it - I think you would see that I have always hoped he would break out - but that SL game has about 1.5 plays where Crabbe was not assisted on a shot - and it was in SL - where Petro showed it at the highest level of Euroleague play - which are certainly better competition than this rag-tag group of misfits playing in summer-league.

I would say that I would really be surprised if AC will ever be anything more than a role player in the league - I wish him the best, but that is my opinion. Petro showed an awful lot more than Crabbe before he got a featured role at the NBA.

Pistol Pete Petrovic was one of my favorite Blazers. I always begged for him to get minutes, was excited when he came into the game; I was bummed when he was traded, and crushed when he died.
