cool dude, me too. But whenever i get in a conversation about religion withg "religious" people, they cant admit that the world is more the 4-6 thousand years old, or anything else like that, like how dinosaurs either didnt exist, or were on the earth at the same time as humans.
 
That's because most religious nuts aren't open minded and refuse to expand their minds. Which in turn is the ironic thing about their religion and how they vow to accept so many things equally. Once you question somebodies belief system with your own, they feel threatened.

Ok, the easter bunny does not exist because, 1. those eggs dont hide themselves, people do, 2. i have seen about a zillion different PEOPLE claiming to be the easter bunnya t malls and whatnot. Plus i am sure you could find the souce of the easter bunny from whichever marketing team though him up.

A god isnt created dude, that is the point. If gods were created, then who/what would create them??? They have been here since the begining. Quit trying to act like god is just some dude in the clouds. God is everywhere and everything. If you dont believe in him fine, thats your beef. But why not???

No matter what religion you follow in life, the main objective for religion (atleast for me) is to have something to believe in when you need it most. I know it is a selfish approach, but only a few in this world are truly and completely religious to the extent that our religious texts want us to be. The rest believe in God to a certain extent and believe that God is there to protect them when things are rough. I don't believe in God for the sake of believing in God, but rather because I believe God is something that exists inside of us rather then a physical being on the outside. God is not "a person", but rather a prescnence inside of us. Although I am hindu and do believe in the Gods that my family worships as well, I also follow through with my own theory. Regardless of what I go through in life, I believe that God is watching and that everything I go through in life will make me stronger and is happening for a reason. God is not there so you can blame him for your problems...everyone gets dealt different cards based upon thier karma in previous lives (this I STRONGLY believe in)...and it's upto you to use the life you have been given to the best of your ability all the while believe in a prescence greater then yourself....believeing in something incomprehensible.

Sorry that was a rant, but I hope you understand the point of view I'm 'preaching'.

God is not a man, nor a woman for that matter...I know everyone has different faiths and believe as to who "God" is, but God to me is not a person...God is a belief in order to make you a stronger human being...God is not imaginable...

Theres plenty different beliefs on who wrote the Bible, but the facts are that the people who did write the Bible were Jesus's closest partners and were with him all the time. The Bible even has quotes of Jesus himself talking to the people. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit guided them while they were writing this. This is without a doubt true because a book written like that with that type of powerful writing simply cannot be written by a human alone.
 
There has to be a purpose for your life.. You just dont come here and live. My purpose is to worship god. God was just there.. He created everyone so they can worship him.. you might not understand this because ur athiest. i know its hard for you to understand but im just telling you what i believe in..

Ok then, so you know the Easter Bunny doesnt exist, well then why God? Why dont you believe in a giant Rabbit who goes around delivering chocolate eggs to kids on Easter, but yet you believe in some "thing" that no one knows what it is, that apparentley created the entire universe? I mean there is even more evidence to suggest the Easter Bunny is real than there is God!

I've never acted like God was "some guy in the clouds", I've never acted to know what God might've been, I dont even believe in God to believe he/it was anything. You guys were/are the ones referring to him as a human.

I dont have any beef, if you want to believe in God, thats fine, thats on you, I respect your views, I dont expect my opinions on this subject to change yours. This is a forum, and we're having an intellectual conversation about Religion, I'm simply trying to learn why it is you and others believe in "God" and I am expressing my views towards it.

Ok, so let me get this straight.

Some of Jesus' friends were just sitting around one day, all of a sudden they were met by this, this "thing" that no one knew what it was, yet it had the ability to talk and function with humans and sent them messages of how it constructed the universe and about how life is supposed to be?

lol, there is nothing hard for me to understand, I know exactly what you're talking about, it just makes no sense.

No there doesnt have to be a purpose to life. We do just come here and live, we as individuals make our own decisions, we have developed a society in which we choose what our purpose is. If I want to become a Doctor for example, I go and study to become one, I'm not born with the sole purpose of becoming a doctor. Religion would like you to think otherwise.

Your purpose isnt to worship God, you choose to worship him, you think your purpose is to worship him, for what ever reason that may be, but in reality, its just a choice. I mean you dont even know what it is you're worshipping, you say God, but you still cant tell me what God is.

How do you expect me and others to take religion seriously, when each faith has a different view on what God is? Who is right?
 
I'm an athesit. I was born a Catholic because both of my parents are but I'm not involved in anything religious at all and I really don't believe in God. I don't believe that many (if any) of the events in the Bible actually took place but I know that each story has a valuable message in it so it doesn't matter if it happened or not as long as you get the message and take it to heart. Same thing with God, it doesn't matter if he exists or not, if you have faith in something and you're a part of a religion you'll probably have alot better guidance in life since you then belong to a "family" who will be there for you. IMO religions are more about helping people and giving guidance to the people of the world than believing in a God and worshiping him.

But like I said, I don't go to church, I've never read the Bible, I don't wear a cross, I'm not confirmed. I'm really an aetheist but I'm technically a Catholic because of the family I was born into. I think religion is a good thing even though I don't practice it, I don't feel that I would be much different if I was a practicing Catholic and I disagree with alot of the things the Church says so rather than calling myself a Catholic then going out and disobeying the Church/Bible (like so many do) I call myself an atheist.
 
The old testament is just a bunch of old stories found in any culture/religion of the world. The new testament is simply jesus' life as told by his friends. People take it way to seriously. It wasnt written by god or anything like that, it is simply a good book with a lot of great teachings in it. Why do you think it is called the "good" book.

Now this makes alot more sense, especially the bolded part.

I think it is great that it is making people better themselves, however I personally dont need that book (or anyone for that fact) to tell me how I should be living my life, I know what it takes to be a good person, and I am one, without going to Church, or worshipping somthing that is nothing more than a make believe character.

they are similar because they are basically the exact same thing. Both contain the old testament (not exactly, but basically the same), but the quaran instead of the bible, has muhommeds (sorry bout the spelling, but i have seen this name spelt about 100 different ways) stories instead of jesus'.

I believe that those who believe in Jesus Christ and that he died for us will go to Heaven and be with him for eternity. Other religions may believe something different since Islam has Mohammed (not sure how to spell it) instead of Jesus. The point is this thread has turned from "What religion are you" to "Why religion is wrong and horrible." Although I may think many of you are wrong or may not agree with you, I still respect your opinions and am not going to bash your beliefs simply because I do not agree with them. I do believe that many people grow up in a religious family and never read into other worldviews. I'm taking a world religions class next year so I can see more of what others believe and test my faith in the process. I encourage many of you to look into other religions and see what there views are (I know many of you are very knowledgeable of other religions, just for those of you who aren't) I just hope in the future we can respect each others opinions and rather than posting comments like " I think religion is crap."

Yeah thats true..Quran and Bible have the same message except a few things are different. Quran talks about Mohammed (as Muslims believe God's messenger).. And Bible i guess talks about Jesus (god's son as Christians believe). The reason there isn't that much talk about Jesus in Quran is because Muslims don't believe that Jesus is the son of god..instead we believe Jesus as being one of the prophets like Mohammed. But you are right..Quran and Bible are similar and that Quran mostly talks about Mohammed while Bible talks about Jesus. I just stated above why Quran talks about Mohammed and why Bible talks about Jesus. Its because if Muslims believed that Jesus was son of god..Then there would be more talk about Jesus in Quran. But there is more talk about Mohammed because he was the last prophet and because he was god's messenger. Thats why Quran talks a lot about Mohammed.

No one is saying religion is wrong and horrible, no one is bashing anyones opinions, I'm just trying to see things from your point of view, not being religious myself, I'm interested to see what it is you believe in so highly.

So you honestly believe, God, somthing that doesnt exist apparentley, sent a book down from the sky to man which became the Quaran? Let me ask you, those terrorists who kill hundreds of people, because "Allah had shown them the way", were they right to do so?

Since you did not acknowledge my other post in the previous page of this thread, I will reiterate some thoughts I posted on there and if you're confused as to why I'm saying what I'm saying, read my previous post.

In terms of God existence...God is not a person first of all, that is my belief...God is a prescence inside of us that makes us stronger (I would elaborate but I wrote a paragraph last time and I don't feel like reiterating everything I already said), God is an incomprehensible belief, something none of us can fathom.

In terms of the books of religion...I do not have much knowledge on any of the major books, even the ones from my own religion (Hinduism), but I just believe that all the books are written to promote a better society by other humans and people connected with God throughout the years of human existence.

Those who do that believe they are doing it for a purpose. We all have different reasons for why we do things. For example, you don't believe in God. You have a reason as to why you don't. Terrorists might believe they are doing things in the right way and using God's name to avenge what they feel is "injustice". Terorists do not just kill for absolutely no purpose, everything in life has a reason and purpose. There is a reason why there are wars and there is a reason why they uyse God's name as well. They probably feel as if there has been injustice in thier lives by another country, perhaps towards thier own country and they feel the best way for justice and peace as God intended is through getting even with the enemy.

Once again, everyone has different perspectives, and this concerns religion as well. Not everyone will take religion in the same way....some make use it as an excuse to do something that goes against that same religion while others use it as a stepping stone to achieve what others percieve as "good" things. Perspective is the key point in 'understanding' religion.

This is basically my point, there is no possible way God could exist, because everyone has a different opinion on what God is. To you, God is some sort of hidden power that everyone apparentley posses, to some God is a powerful force in the universe, to some God is a guy who sits in the clouds watching over us, if everyone has a different view on what God is, how can it be determined a God existed? It cant, God only exists in the minds of those who choose to believe it.

Basically there cant be any such thing as religion, only opinions.

Sorry, but this is absolute rubbish. So you're actually telling me, its ok for some one to take the life of another person, if that person has gotten the "ok" from God? I mean what If I came to your house, and killed everyone in your family, but I claimed I was acting on a reason given to me from God, you would be ok with that would you?

Everything in life doesnt have a purpose. What do you think Wars are/were meant to happen? That God intended for them to take place? No, thats garbage, wars happen due to stupidity. If Hezbollah had never kidnapped 2 Israli soldiers, there would be no Israel/Lebanon war. If Hitler had never invaded Poland and exterminated 11,000,000 people, there never would have been a World War 2.

Do you think people kill each other because it was "meant" to happen?

Do you think there are people starving to death in Africa because is was "meant" to happen?

Do you think we cut down rainforests because it was "meant" to happen?

Do you think children are raped and molested because it was "meant" to happen?

No. People are responsible for everything we do on this planet, there is no one you can blame, you cant blame the worlds problems on God, and stupid theories about how it was "meant to be", thats just taking the easy way out.

Of course people have different views on god! Are you slow or what?? Why do you think there are different religions then?? Different religions have different views on god! So let me get this straight, you read some ridiculous book written by some guy about how you should be living your life, and you suddenly have the answers to life? Do you honestly believe God handed a book (A book for christs sake!) down from the freaking sky, claiming it as his rules and regulations to the world!? Gimme a break.

I'm not the one going around claiming to know why we're here, when the world is going to end and what happens after we die, I mean do you understand how idiotic you sound? You're actually claiming to know what happens when we die, when we die! How do you know? How do you know there is a Heaven and a Hell? Because some stupid book told you there was? You sir are going to be mighty dissapointed when you die and find out you're just rotting away in the ground.

God is nothing more than a folk tale, a myth passed down through the ages. There is absolutley no difference between God and Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, none at all.

I mean you still havent even been able to tell me what God is, you've just alluded it. If you know so much, why cant you tell me what God is? Because you dont know. No one knows, you're worshipping somthing that you dont understand, that doesnt even exist.

No, because we know Derek Jeter exists, we can see him, we can hear him talk, we can see him play. Although some people might not agree, there is a big difference between Derek Jeter and God.

Look at it like this, say I believe in God, and I believe God is a purple squid, and you believe God is a broken tv, who is right? No one, right? Well if we're not right, what is God? God cant be anything, because if he isnt what we believe him to be, what is he?

I think you misinterpreted him. He wasn't calling people who believe in God idiots, he's just saying people use God's name in vain to commit thier actions or some things happen in this world that people say is "meant to" happen; but there is no goodness in it whatsoever and that people are "idiots" because they do idiotic things and we have no explanations to justify thier actions.

It's not a matter of opinions...it's a matter of perspective on religion. Basically, as I said before, people NEED something to believe in, something to hold on to so they can, even for a second, erase thier fears. It's a belief. We can never PROVE God existed...if we proved God existed, it's would be pointless I believe.
There are so many religions in this world...why? Because everyone has a different belief as to what "God" is. It's not opinion, it's perspective...it's what we choose to believe as to what God is. My perspective as to what God is differs from that of a Catholic...however, we both believe in God, just have different perspectives as to what "God" is.

No, I mean, if you take that action and believe you did it for God, ITS YOUR BELIEF. Obviously I wouldn't be okay with it but THATS YOUR BELIEF. In my religion, cows are sacred animals...I live in the Western world...any religous hindu person that sees beef being sold everyday in mass quantities may find that sinful and atrocious but others are completely oblivious as to the "sacredness" of beef in my religion. This is because they believe in religion from a different perspective then that of a hindu. In the end, one person cannot be responsible for others beliefs. I wouldn't be ok with you harming my family for God...I wouldn't be ok with you harming my family period.
Just because you say you do it for God doesn't mean it's okay. It just means your perspective of the reasonings of God is a little jaded and moreso perplexed then that of other people.

Look, basically, God has given us this world....what we do while we're in here is our business....everyone is responsible for their own actions. That includes politicians, lawyers, druggies, hypnotists, anyone....but in the end, everyone needs somehting to believe in.

You may not believe that a God exists but in the deepest darkest moments of your life when you have no one to turn to but yourself, when you're in a state of personal torment and you feel no one will ever know what you're going through....what are you going to do? Where will you get the inner strength to continue?

Once again, actions of humans are thier own fault. How is it God's fault if some people in this world decide to do insanely cruel things??

There are 6 billion + people in this world...each one of them has problems....each one expects God to solve them...God cannot solve every single one problem that everyone asks of them...and that is because the reasons problems exist in the first place is for us to learn from them.

Believe it or not but around the time I joined this site, I was strictly an atheiest....I believed in God to a certain extent but I doubted God because I felt the cards of roadblocks I had come across in life at such a young age were unfair. I look back at this and laugh now....because now, throughout these 3 years I have found happiness, only to lose it again...and I have lost it for a reason. Everything I have gone through has taught me one thing or the other. And nothing can shake my belief about that now. So, in the end, my tribulations made me a stronger person, which I believe is the main point of religion in the first place.

I cannot explain why there are so many people in this world starving and dying but personally I believe it has to do with karma, in combination with the overall stupidity of mankind. Our world is so based on power, greed and rising on top of the ladder that an economical imbalance is bound to happen with the current format we live in. Although it is not easy to comprehend an "equal" society based on what we have been exposed to since we grew up...but can you imagine if you were born into a world where everything and everyone was equal....wouldn't it be difficult to comprehend a system of life as the one we are accustomed to in this world now?

God has created beings. This world that we are surrounded by may be a product that can come into perspective by ways of science, but how do you explain humans?
How do you explain existence itself??

Okay, we evolved from monkeys, that's great. But who created the first monkey? I'm sure the first species (of any kind) on Earth was not a result of the "big bang" or any other scientific theory?? It's cool that we evolved from something but how was the source of that evolution itself created from?

People who blame God for thier problems are really just weak in faith or just need a source outlet for thier anger. Everything does happen in life for a reason if you look at it. The past influences the present and the present will come to influence the future.
 
I haven’t read this thread since my post, but I’m going to give my basic over view. It is hard to explain religion, or god to a person who does not have faith, because that is the general bases of religion. There is no way to explain religion logically, because it is something beyond our understanding. I am a very religious person (bible study, church, etc.) religion gives people a sense of fulfillment; as though they are, part of something bigger than them. I am not going to sit here and try to explain faith, because it’s really something that can’t be supported by facts. Discussing faith on an internet message board is pretty pointless. One person who you have never met is not going to change what you have been raised to believe your entire life.
