Brilliant and extremely important video....made my day to hear this heartfelt breakdown of what I feel has been a huge problem in hip hop culture for a long time....I feel the same about some rock or metal artists as well....this video should be spread around the globe

Fortunately guys like Kendrick lamar and j cole are hugely popular. Unfortunate thing is I don’t think people who listen to them listen to the message. Conscious rap just isn’t cool to a lot of young people. Mumble rap as it’s called such as migos and these other guys is the cool thing when really the lyrics are just generic nonsense as well as the beats. I wish that shit wasn’t cool but it is. A lot of good underground conscious rap out there but they don’t get any play so they aren’t popular.

Thats not Hip Hop bro.
That's not his point if you follow the video....it's the culture of demeaning women, violence, drugs, fast money, etc...…..I think it applies to a lot of media outlets...film, video games, music, etc.....he was addressing the lost msg to urban youth and how it's morphed and sure there's probably good stuff, but it's not the mainstream as much...I sure saw that through my son's and his friends music....had the same complaint...great video in my view

I don’t click on links like that. I don’t need to.

Mid-90s was the golden era - the stuff after all sounds the same to me.

There is TONS of quality stuff out there still.

He's not saying that there isn't. That's not what he's saying at all. DMC is saying that the rap that's mainstream is shit and that's promoting the wrong message.

He called mainstream hip hop basically disco.

I thought the part about there are no more groups was interesting. Made me realize that the majority of rap I like are from groups vs solo artists.

Last groups in hip hop I listened to that I liked were people under the stairs and Jurassic 5. Migos is a current group but their music is just mumble rap as dmc refers to in the video.

Live hip hop is terrible
personally I'm not a fan of watching somebody rap while somebody else plays records on a table....my hip hop dislike starts with the stereo replacing the band...put a lot of musicians out of work...as to comparing the Roots or actual bands to MCs...I don't see them in the same light....James Brown rapped in his songs but not karaoke style...he had a band to back him up...my 2 cents about hip hop....I do like poets who work with RB bands or jazz combos....and that's not new in music...they were doing that in the 50s...I'm a fan of Arrested Development and Blueseum….awesome stuff. The Roots can play anything from Zappa to Miles Davis..DMCs talking about the msg and culture more than entertainment

James Brown rapped in his songs but not karaoke style...he had a band to back him up

I love James Brown, have his entire catalog, but that man fucked over in pay and residuals every artist he played and recorded with.

But back to your point, in inner city schools the first thing to get cut is music and art. Rapping over records is an inexpensive and easy way for someone to find a creative outlet for music and message.

So is an acoustic guitar though..Richie Havens...or a harmonica which costs 5 bucks....poets have performed forever with just a sheet of paper...call me old school. A set of bongos is like 50 bucks....I understand where rap comes from as an urban form but have never supported the form as a musical force...personal preference..the Beastie Boys played instruments in their shows at one point. Also not a fan of poorly played music like the Sex Pistols....Arrested Development is an awesome band....I have a friend in a classic rock tribute band here in Eugene who doesn't even play his keyboards live...he has all the parts programed in a just pushes the play button....I give him a hard time about it. Not a fan of drum machines...it's like lip synching to me

I loved Count Basie and Duke Ellington but no way they could pay that many people and be competitive performing live...actually the Hammond B3 organ put big bands out of business
you'd be amazed how many band leaders pay their bands peanuts....Disco made everyone think they needed a 120bpm drum machine back beat to make people dance.....and disco did suck for that reason alone

I'm a poetry fan though.....I've played in a band that backed up some great beat poets back in the day....much better to my ear than the robotic soundtracks they use in this form....my appreciation of the form is the organic content...the lyrics and msg

What is this “hip hop” you people talk about? Why do we care about a rabbit who is “with it”? Can we talk about something else now? Maybe talk about music? Yeah, music! Now there’s an idea........

Tribe released this song 2 years ago and I've been waiting for them to finish the vid ever since.
