I forgot that Bill Oram came from LA, after covering the Lakers.
Didn’t happen when Paul bought the teamNew ownership
Didn’t happen when Paul bought the team
Didn’t happen when he built the Rose Garden
Grease the palmsIt's not gonna happen either. hell they had a city that doesn't even *have* a team host it (granted, they have plenty of hotel space...but you'd think that the NBA would put cities that actually have teams, including one for 5 decades, ahead of a shiny object).
My biggest complaint about going to concerts and games at the Moda is getting in and out of the area. Traffic around the Moda is shit. I-5 being only 2 lanes in each direction is ridiculous. I like Max and the streetcar for getting there, trying to use it to leave is a madhouse.
This combined with almost nothing to do outside of the moda within walking distance.
If they rebuilt AROUND the moda, it would do far more to increase chances than improving the moda itself. The traffic is soooooo bad. but if we had things to do within walking distance after the game i think it would help disperse the traffic. Not everyone is hitting the onramps at the same time. The area around the moda is complete shit.
Make the Moda/MC/CC a small city inside the city. Mono rail transport with the stops at various bars and shops plus venues. How sweet would it be if they had a giant roof top bar on the MC.

Build upward. Create a Casino/amusement park and have there be access to a number of huge resort style motels.
Everything from swimming to spas and fine dining all in a complete package.
Real talk time, I love Portland. I know this city and its history better than most.
When they talk about Portland not having enough hotel rooms that is an overly simplistic take that has not been explained in detail to people.
It's not just rooms, it is also what goes with rooms, things like places to eat and entertainment.
Besides the game, where do 10-15 thousand people go to eat and for fun near the Moda center?
What is there to do in Portland?
The Portland area's biggest tourist attraction? Ilani Casino.
The new convention center hotel will be bankrupt and closed by the time we eventually get an All-Star game.
The citizens of Portland were sold a bill of goods about the convention center expansion and co-financing the convention center hotel. "Build it, and they will come!" But they're not. If you were going to hold a large convention somewhere would you pick Portland? Here are the Top 10 most popular convention cities:
The top 10 cities are:
Portland's rank, 38th on some lists, and unranked on others.
- Orlando, FL
- Washington, DC
- Las Vegas, NV
- Miami, FL
- Chicago, IL
- San Diego, CA
- Phoenix, AZ
- Atlanta, GA
- Dallas, TX
- New Orleans, LA
This doesn't mean Portland is bad, or the NBA hates Portland, it just means we can't handle that big of an event.
What? I grew up with all of Tom Potters kids. Literally went to kindergarten with Katie. Used to get rides in Tom's police cruiser. Known them all my life. Tom loved sports and loved baseball. He just had much bigger issues to deal with and a police department that was making more money off of selling cocaine/meth than arresting the people selling it to the kids.Keep the name Portland Trailblazers and move the team across the river to Vancouver where developers understand how to get a thriving downtown waterfront going.
Seriously, I don’t think Portland has ever had a mayor who gave 2 shits about sports. Who was it? Potter? That said that bringing baseball to Portland was absolutely dead last in his priorities? And that was before Portland had the problems it has now.
Great take. I agree. A bunch of work is being done. The Blazers are working on big plans for renovation of Moda to prepare for the Women's Final Four. The Iconic roof just got a new coating on it. I personally would love it if they opened up the sides with more glass. The seats most likely will be replaced. But please keep the multi color Blazer theme with the seating. Too many of these renos use just black seats. I love the Moda Center. Ball Arena in Denver is a nice arena, but doesn't let you know where the heck you are. It could be in any city in the world. The bones of the Moda Center are good. The design stands out compared to most cookie cutter designs today. Chase in Frisco, Boring, corporate, can with seats in it. It would be nice to have a little more seat space upstairs. It's tight up there. But i am excited about the Blazers plan for upgrades, both to the team, and the arena. And the big plans for the neighborhood are very exciting. Portland is on it's way back. Those casting stones better worry about their own back yards.
The Moda Center will be closed from early July through mid-September while it’s being revamped, according to Chris Oxley, the general manager of Rip City Management. Renovations include replacing the steel lower bowl structure and upgrading some seats.
Why only some of the seats? Just do all of them! Don’t be so greedy.

There are a fuck ton of strip clubs though. Probably the most per capita in the country.Just think how incredibly shitty it is around the Moda Center. And I don't mean the homeless even, though they contribute. There is nothing there. There's a wacky transit hub and the Left Bank building has and Upright Brewing, but other than that? Jack's maybe? The area is not All-Star Game friendly. The entire campus kind of sucks. You have this old building with ivy all around it that should probably go, several terrible parking lots, the aforementioned Jack's which is okay, I guess, and a PT place which is nice but really you need to be invited to go there. Off campus you have a few shitty hotels (although up the road they've built some nicer, bigger ones), storage places, an oncology clinic (weeeee that sounds fun), a couple of apartment buildings, and what? The freeway? A couple of busy roads, MAX lines all over, a grain silo thing, train tracks...hey maybe walk over the steel bridge and check things out...nope.
I mean, we are never going to get an All-Star Game unless the arena moves or something.
Does The National Basketball Association look at this as a positive deciding factor? There are a fuck ton of strip clubs though. Probably the most per capita in the country.
The NBAPA probably does...Does The National Basketball Association look at this as a positive deciding factor?
