What YOU guys need to realize

I'm so confused in saying this...I, agree? with DaRizzle? I just feel dirty now.

I'd be disappointed if they didn't make playoffs, but adding 4 new guys to the mix (at least 3 who will probably play a lot of time) will kind of throw things off a bit. They're going to have to get that chemistry from last year going again. I don't think it'd be a fail if they missed playoffs, but I would be disappointed.

Well this thread isnt about the Lakers but at the time nearly everybody agreed with the trade. Lakers needed a big man desperatly..Kwame also led to Pau :devilwink:

The situations are completely different. Do you guys have the best player in the league entering his prime? No. Me personally, I was hating Kobe more than anyone else in that whole situation.

Just as long as you admit that there were a lot of opinions going around in Lakerland that might have helped you that year, but not been good in the big scheme of things... And as long as you can admit that many Laker fans had incorrectly labeled Bynum a bust and were freaking out...

The teams situations were different, but not the stupidity of fans and their ideas. That's all I'm saying. I just love getting preached to by people who do the exact opposite of what they're saying, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Im speaking for me..not a billion internet retarded Lakers fans. I was always against Kidd just for his age and salary. He is no savior so what would have been the point at that time. Fans wanted to trade the savior :tsktsk:

Within my circle I heard nobody calling Bynum a bust up to that point..just a project

I'd agree with DaRizzle's original post.

Let 'em play and see what happens; in a town as sports-poor as Portland, it's non-stop Blazers coverage and obsession all year 'round. We need to see what these guys can do together, separate the wheat from the chaff, and probably make a roster adjustment or two before we are really at the upper echelon of the Western conference. Right now, I still believe we are very much an 'on the bubble' playoff team.

45 or 46 wins would probably be my over-under for the Blazers this year, so 44 wouldn't be a major dissapointment. I think finishing @ .500 would be under-performing, though.

We travel in different circles then. My circle encompasses the majority of reality.

For the record, I'm with you as far as your original post goes. I'm not shooting the message, just the messanger... :stirthepot::pokecrap:

To me, the success of this season is measure by how well our big three develop- I expect the playoffs- but if I could get 2 out of 3 of the big three at near all star level and the other at a good level- then this is more important to me than playoffs. In other words, if we look strong at the 2,4 and 5 but miss the playoffs because our point guards all suck- I could live with this.

Now, the enjoyment of the season is heightened by the playoffs.

I think having higher than normal expectations for a fan base is a good thing.

Your team isnt built for this year.Unless you HONESTLY think they have a chance this year to win it all(rocketeer, Kingspeed) then you gotta view this year just as development for the next year. Everything will be much more clear by then. There are a lot of opinions going on around here that might help this year but not be good in the big scheme of things...Let the team play and grow an identity. Dont try to start labeling people incorrectly and then freak out when they dont live up to unrealistic expectations.

This thread isnt me trying to talk trash about your team at all. Even the best players in the league needed a few years to realize their potential.

This seems a bit obvious. Not many think we are going to win it all this year. Making it to the playoffs would be a successful season. It'd be really nice to make it into the second round, but most likely not this year.

I just think we are looking for improvement and a playoff spot...

Beyond that its all gravy.

In the offseason my prediction was 52 wins. 50 would be very realistic. However, management
waited 2-3 weeks too many getting Oden ready. If Oden was in basketball shape starting game 1
of the season, I'd stick with my 52.

Now, Oden's injured again, and we're small again. What's my modified prediction? We need to
go .500 until the new year when Oden should be in game shape, and then continue at a rate
of 52/82 the rest of the way. Of course that assumes the schedule difficulty is uniform, it's not.

I don't really call that patient.

Shouldn't we believe that our team has a chance to make the playoffs.......It's going to be a long season anyways, why not believe in the talent that Portland has now? I'm sure that we'll have some nice wins this year, we have already had a blowout with more to follow I'm sure, but I think that this team could make the post season....it's going to be a learning season yet again, but I like what is already on the books as far as talent, now will it all fit together? I guess we'll see soon enough.

Hell yeah- we're making the playoffs- we will keep getting better as the season goes on. Even playoff teams get blown out from time to time. Heck, teams in the playoffs get blown out and sometimes come back to win the series.

It's only 3 games- wait 20 games or so and then we can take a better early measurement.

Last year was still a bit of a fluke to me. They had one incredible run where they won about a third of their games... all in a row. The team overachieved last year in finishing at .500.

Ed O.

Yet probability says that doesn't matter.

41 wins is 41 wins, right?

If I toss heads 41 times in a row, then toss tails 41 times in a row, how is that different than tossing heads, then tails on each successive toss?

I would consider 44 great if we play all year without Oden but if Oden comes back healthy I fully expect us to be at 49-50 wins. He should be able to make a 9 game improvement with a premier center.

With Greg out the first 2-4 weeks I don't think we'll reach 55-56 wins as I originally predicted. It will more likely be 48-50 now. Hopefully enough to make the playoffs.

So if they miss the 8th seed by one game with say 44 wins then the season is a failure?

Not necessarily a failure but definitely a disapppointment. A failure would have to be based on considerably less than 40 wins for the season and no marked improvement shown for any of the team's players. Based on last year's 41 - 41 record and the current team roster, it is not unusual for Blazer fans to project and expect the team to be back in the playoff hunt with more than 50 wins this year. The addition of Oden, Rudy, Batum and Bayless this year should be worth at least 9 more wins over last years record.

If I remember correctly, the Blazers started out slow last year, too. But already in the 3 games of this season, we have seen improved play by LaMarcus, Sergio, and Batum, while Roy is being Roy and Rudy is being Rudy. The results, the Blazers have defeated the Spurs - the first time in years. And while 1 - 2, it is not uncommon to lose on the road early in the season to two teams that had 50 + wins last year.

I do agree with you that this young Blazer team needs to develop more experience playing together and a greater team identity. Also that Blazer fan expectations should not be overly high or unfair. But with this said, I expect that later on in the season, as they get more experience, the Blazers will tag both the Lakers and the Suns with losses. Looking forward to next time around.

Go Blazers!

It's playoffs or bust for me.

The good news is that we see the bad habits and troubling patterns early and have plenty of time to correct them. It's nothing some moves by KP can't correct. I just hope we don't sit on our hands too long without making moves.

With a third of the season gone, I thought it would be interesting to revisit this thread.
Have people's expectations changed?

What would make this season a success?

Will this be a 50 win season?
I think we'll go 48 - 34 and make the playoffs but not have home court advantage

Oh god...when I saw this bumped I thought somebody was shit talking to me or something...lol

i thought 53-29 since July, still sticking with it. Roy is still getting better by the day and Oden is only growing more confident. If our damn bench can just bring it night in and night out, Ike over Channing should help, we will be in great shape.

If we don't make the playoffs, I will be severely disappointed.

And what YOU (DaRizzle) need to realize...

... is that the clock stops when a ref blows the whistle!

I have a random question for you. Is your avatar from an actual movie scene where that was supposed to happen, or was it an outtake or something where he just decided to feel alba's booty?
