Interesting. What with all the talk of federal pandemic benefits being the cause and all...

Didn't that end in September?

not sure. I just know i see them everywhere. Even got a letter from a vendor today stating they have to increase costs of services due to escalated employee wages in order to try to hire quality employees.

Yeah. We're getting the same letters from our vendors. Even had some say they aren't doing our work because they need to focus on their higher volume customers because they can't get employees.

Of course, those places tend to be the ones which treated their employees like dirt...

My theory is everyone got used to not working, so they are chillin.

or just provide minimum wage.

Funny you mention that. The one who sent us the letter, Ive visited. Filthy place with minimum wagers no doubt and they are constantly screwing our orders up…

Which reminds me of that Frank Layden (former Head Coach of the Utah Jazz) quote: "Sometimes I get the urge to jog......Then I lay down until the feeling passes."

Yeah, it was coming. The quarantine showed a lot of people that their time is far more valuable than they thought.

Especially boomers who were hanging on to their jobs out of habit.

COVID taught me to really get into my wife. I just wish I hadn't added 15 lbs. in the process.

Lol, yeah I hear you there. And I REALLY couldn't afford adding the covid-19... Alas, I did.

But for me it was just keeping my kids busy. We didn't have time to eat right and be everywhere to keep their extracurricular stuff going. Usually having to organize and/or coach it ourselves.

I mean, I'm sure we could have, but we were struggling with it even before the lockdowns.

The first post in this thread nearly a year and a half ago. Remarkable. Hey, I was born in Portland and always have high hopes for the city. That's a hard nut to crack these days, though.

I have never in my over half a century of adult life, seen a needle in Portland.
Lanny, Im nearly, nearly, as old as you are and last year when I had to go visit my doc at Good Sam downtown I couldn't believe how many tents were up. And while walking to the hospital I noticed a couple needles along the way. There was a guy lying on the sidewalk that I didnt know was alive or dead so I asked the dude standing next to him if he was ok and the guy on the ground rolled over and said yeah man thanks for asking got any spare change. I gave the guy a couple bucks. I remember back in the sixties people in the same area panhandled all the time. And did drugs. Didnt see as many homeless and tents though.

few months back i picked up my mother from the train station. I parked across the street and it has a small brick wall about 3’ tall. As I'm parking, i watch a guy(mid 30’s?) with a backpack and skateboard plop down with his back to the wall, legs sprawled on the sidewalk and proceed to inject into his arm a drug. Right in daylight.

I'm sure he would have shared if you asked nicely.

And we're paying $40k per year for him to do that out in the public. We could put him in jail and pay $60k per year for him to do drugs there... Until he gets out and goes back to doing it in public.

Or we could spend half to a third as much to house him and help him find treatment which would more likely be effective since it would be his choice.

Did he do any cool skate tricks?

im all for as this as long as he also isnt committing other crimes and it also has to be forced voluntary. Meaning he has to want it and volunteer but also understand if he fails he gets locked up.
Ive never said I'm for locking up drug addicts for using drugs. Im for locking up drug addicts who commit crimes to support their habit.

Agreed. Nobody is opposed to locking up criminals for committing violence or theft. Regardless of their involvement with drugs.
