Rumor What's going on in Portland?

It’s bad these days. Those who fail to acknowledge it are in denial.

Many parts of the city look like a 3rd world country.

KOIN just had an hour special the other day about how fucked up the city has become.

I have a granddaughter that was discussing with a few college and career councilors about various schools to attend in a year, both advised because her age not to attend PSU because of the mess and harassment down at the park blocks. I told her I would take her down there and she can decide herself. Thats where I went early in the 70,s and wife got her Masters. For councilors to be directing kids away from PSU is unfortunate.

I drove through Portland for the first time in a long time on my way to go get my second COVID shot out at PDX.

Our city is a shit hole now. There is literally graffiti along the entirety of the free way from 405 out to 84 and all the way to the PDX exit, with tents and camps sporadically placed throughout. This is what lawlessness looks like. The Mayor and his people are so scared to stand up to the protestors and the vagrants that they have completely allowed the city to fall into disrepair. It looks like a city in dystopian future. I have never in my life seen it this bad. Our beautiful city now looks like a dump.
Yep, I've driven through a couple times. Looks like a total shit hole!

Yeah. I heard on the radio today that wheeler and appointed Sam Adams’s plan is to build camps in neighborhoods around town and relocate them there.

i mean... im at a loss for words other than im sooo glad i got out.
I contend that the only real solution starts with closing the wealth gap.

Rumor has it they’re all getting bus tickets to Canby. The fairgrounds is going to become a tent city…….. :bgrin:

As corporations dole out less than living wages, our own U.S. government looks the other way. Our U.S. congress is every bit as inhumane as our ruling class is.

Things are only going to get worse.

So the city announced FINALLY that they are going to start to be more aggressive cleaning up homeless encampments. They concluded that their passive approach "has not been effective."

Wow, we got some real geniuses running this place!

Seems to me that our homeless population knows it can do whatever it wants, wherever it wants. Tent here, there, garbage, just do your thing. Maybe they should feel like they can't and they might be encouraged to change their ways. If they have to live in a homeless shelter in a vacant warehouse somewhere and cant have bonfires on sidewalks, they might not have as much fun and figure something out. If not, no problem, but you arent throwing up a campsite on the freeway. They have got to figure this out, bring in experts from cities around the country - or world - who have tackled homelessness, and solve it.

I dont buy closing income gap, comes anywhere close to solving homelessness. Ive know a number of individuals over the years that choose to live amongst homeless as its insulates them from addressing addiction issue's. There is help available but mant choose not to change. Yes, a percentage are dealing with mental issues and there is help for them too. And there are many that simply are lazy or don't want to work or try and get on their feet.

I don't think there is anything "fun" about it, but it can't just be anything goes. I work in the Pearl. There were 3 homeless people sleeping on the street and two new tents here this morning. WTF Portland?

oh man your a out to get blasted. Lol

i said basically the same thing last year and was laughed and mocked at and considered heartless, i think was a word used when i claimed the homeless have help, are mostly teens and addicts and most can make a choice to get better or not.
Thats why i disagree with paying any money to house the homeless. Because i beleive most in this city will just abuse the grants or free things they might get.
Just like my father who i cant help until he decides he has a problem requiring help, the same goes for the bulk of the homeless.

but last year the homeless are there because of covid. Not because of being lazy teens or drug addicts.
Lol.
Anyhow im with you. There is help already. What most need is a swift kick in the ass to get off their ass and get productive.
How many tents have you seen with people sleeping inside or outside in the middle of the day?

Nice to see so many finally coming around to realizing the homeless are not helpless in portland.

So you agree with Adams and Wheeler that putting the homeless in neighborhoods around town will accomplish this?
Not to butt in, but yes, I do. If they are putting them in apartments. That would be far better than a centralized location keeping them all together.

Our congress is a PART of our ruling class. That's where they come from. Need publicly funded elections ASAP, and increased disincentive to go from congress back to the private sector.

Agreed. The solution is to put them in homes. That's the most effective, lowest cost way it's been solved without violating their rights.

I don't care if they want to be addicted, as long as they have a secure home with heat and water, help available (for addiction, mental illness, etc), and aren't living on our streets and in our parks. They can stay in that apartment addicted for their whole life if they want to refuse the best help we can offer. That's their choice, IMO.

If that's their most appealing option then aren't we failing as a society?

It costs us nearly a living wage per person ($30k per year) just to allow them to be homeless. It costs us more than that to jail them. How about we just give them keys to an apartment and start saving money (it would cost less than $15k per year)? We have more than enough vacancies...

We will have to agree to disagree for a few reasons:

first the homeless are already spread out. The narrative that its jsut downtown is way off base. they are all along 205, johnsons creek trail, etc etc etc.

Second they wont be given apartments from what i gathered. Just minimal shelters in existing neighborhoods

lastly, i highly doubt anyone who owns a home would like a homeless camp set up next door to them.

i do not believe for a second housing them will rid portland of the problem. It will Just put us further in debt. Because we will still be paying for al the clean up they require, plus funding the roof over thier head.

They didnt put them in neighborhoods around town. The homeless population has exploded and they have no where else to go. Its only going to get worse.

They tried to open shelters across the city, but everyone turned their noses up and made a fit. So, now the sidewalks are full of camps.

Sorry you had to see that

I think its possible to build homeless communities within the State that are available to those that want to reside there and contribute in some way. Communal living where all things common. This State has enough property in different locals where communities could be built and managed. If they have drug or alcohol addiction offer free help. Same with mental issues. Encampments are popping up all over Portland. Why?

Housing them would cheaper then letting g them be homeless or jailing them. Why not do it. It would get the majority off the street. A big clean and then we wouldn't have to keep cleaning if we can successfully keep the homeless housed.

Otherwise there will be more and more homeless people and there will be less space and they will be camping outside of people's houses.

Yes. Dignity village is a good example of this.

Truly, you have no idea what you are talking about. Zippo.

My oldest daughter lives in Southeast. The problem is so bad that she and her husband decided to do something about it.

They went on the GoFundMe and raised $2500. Then during the winter they went out three different times with home cooked hot meals for people. They also brought new sleeping bags and warm socks. She said they need was enormous. They couldn't give the stuff away fast enough. It was people displaced by Covid, job losses, drugs too, you name it. Teens? Nope. Addicts? A few.

"There is help already." Get a clue. Example: My daughter put together packets for women - tampons, shampoo, sanitary pads, band aids, etc. That was what was needed most. People wanted socks that are not wet. Must be nice in your warm home, life of relative privilege, money, etc judging others who have had such a hard time they live ON THE FRIGGIN STREET IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR COLD, WET WINTER.

So I laugh at you too and but I don't "consider" you heartless. You have proven it.
