OT What's up with Batum?

There are 192 guys in total over 6'8 in the league. There are only 20 NBA players over 6'8 and 31 years old. Only 10 who are over 32. Batum is 32 next year.

There's a great filtering around that age, and Batum's contract is the only reason he hasn't already been filtered, I suspect.

He might get a vet minimum 1 year deal, but I wouldn't want Portland to offer it.

yeah, he's getting up there in age for a SF

and he was always injured...never severe injuries but nagging injuries that recurred. IIRC, 3 different times, two in Portland and once in charlotte, he had to spend a good part of a season with a brace on his shooting hand because of a wrist injury. That probably explains why his shooting got worse and worse

That's weird: on the one had, there's no way LeBron is 6'9". On the other, there are about 4 players on that list no longer active, so it's even more dire.

Yes, most fans underestimate the physical decline of players over 28. I think it's because some hall of fame guy's play at a high level way into their 30s. But that's so rare and so few players. Peak years are usually 25-27 or so and then players decline.

But you regularly see these enormous guys in the UFC who are still fighting at 35 to 40 years old. You would think getting your face pummeled and ligaments wrenched would age worse, but it doesn't seem to.

But most of them aren't as tall. Perhaps it's a leverage thing, where longer limbs have more problems.....

Why would you care about his compensation? It didn't hinder us in acquiring other pieces. Probably the best 4th or 5th option in the league while he was here. What you should be upset about was his replacements.

I am just disappointed that he didn't reach what he could have been. Or it seems like he wasn't trying hard enough to reach it given the players that he played with Roy, Mathews, Lillard, ROLO. All have hearts for the game and always gives their 100% on the court. If only he get a little bit of that rubbed off onto him and show up more often for his team.

Understood. I just know he was the prefect compliment to those teams on both ends. And as far as him reaching his full potential, He blew my expectations out of the water. I don't expect anything from anybody picked past the lottery to be honest.

That's not a problem with Batum, that's a problem with management.

Batum reminds me of Derrick McKey - another excellent role player (the Pacers traded Detlef Schrempf for him and got better) who everyone expected more from. Remember, Batum is one of very few NBA players to have a 5 x 5. (We are lucky to currently have another!) Also, he was great at everyone's fave play: the chasedown block.

Which is exactly why management was smart to trade him before his next contract came due and made it a Charlotte management problem. He was a solid player, but just not 25 mil solid.
