Was. No matter how much you want to rewrite history to make Lincoln the bad guy and the slave owners the heroes, the fact is that, contrary to your assertion, the supreme court explicitly ruled that Lincoln's action in establishing the blockade was constitutional.
It was a 5-4 decision, and yes, there was quite a bit of politics going on. But that was the ruling.
barfo
Ha! Lincoln appointed Five Justices and they can ignore facts just like today's court.
The slave owner never were right and it was never about them until Lincoln got his ass in trouble with his Federalist. He violated the Constitution in every way possible including starting war
on his own, suspending Habeas corpus, implementing an income tax (without the sixteenth amendment) etc. He made the war about slavery with his emancipation proclamation nearly
two years after starting the war. Hell, in the beginning he was only pissed about not getting the tariff revenue the south paid on the imports they needed to run their agricultural economy.
His Emancipation Proclamation deflected the heat for the war that the North quickly tired of as well as Lincoln's heavy handed transgression on their right and liberty. I think by then he
has some 13000 people in jail with their rights suspended. Later the court ruled that only Congress can suspend Habeas corpus. The bottom line is, Lincoln used the slave as pawns to
gain support for his war.
His ignoring of the Constitution set a terrible precedent for later Presidents to follow. Heck he even ignored the court when they ordered him to stop holding people in jail under the suspended
Habeas corpus.
Yes, he freed the slaves, and in my opinion, the United States paid one hell of a price, in blood, treasure, and precedent for future Presidents like Wilson, Roosevelt, and Obama.
You say, the slave were not for sale! I see no where in history that any President or Congress asked! But I do note that the United States bought out Fisherman, buying their licenses
and boats and basically gave them no choice. Heck, you could have offered the slave holders twice the value of their slaves and saved money. Much better than War. But, it did not begin
over Slaves, it just ended that way in the history books. But I am not so sure the last chapter is written, the pawns are still in play.
