The union soldiers weren't either. They were fighting to preserve the union. A house divided upon itself cannot stand, and all that.

The emancipation proclamation was made 3 years into the war.

No, it was widely known in 1860 that the election was all about whether slavery would continue. A month after Lincoln's inauguration, the first state seceded. There was no surprise 3 years later about the war being all about slavery. It was, from its start.

You're giving the revisionist history that was later written by the South.

Can't be.

Was. No matter how much you want to rewrite history to make Lincoln the bad guy and the slave owners the heroes, the fact is that, contrary to your assertion, the supreme court explicitly ruled that Lincoln's action in establishing the blockade was constitutional.

It was a 5-4 decision, and yes, there was quite a bit of politics going on. But that was the ruling.

Why no emancipation proclamation on day 1?

The south absolutely fought to protect their way of life, including slavery. The north fought to preserve the union - a house divided upon itself cannot stand.

That blows your theory out of the water.

Ha! Lincoln appointed Five Justices and they can ignore facts just like today's court.

The slave owner never were right and it was never about them until Lincoln got his ass in trouble with his Federalist. He violated the Constitution in every way possible including starting war
on his own, suspending Habeas corpus, implementing an income tax (without the sixteenth amendment) etc. He made the war about slavery with his emancipation proclamation nearly
two years after starting the war. Hell, in the beginning he was only pissed about not getting the tariff revenue the south paid on the imports they needed to run their agricultural economy.

His Emancipation Proclamation deflected the heat for the war that the North quickly tired of as well as Lincoln's heavy handed transgression on their right and liberty. I think by then he
has some 13000 people in jail with their rights suspended. Later the court ruled that only Congress can suspend Habeas corpus. The bottom line is, Lincoln used the slave as pawns to
gain support for his war.

His ignoring of the Constitution set a terrible precedent for later Presidents to follow. Heck he even ignored the court when they ordered him to stop holding people in jail under the suspended
Habeas corpus.

Yes, he freed the slaves, and in my opinion, the United States paid one hell of a price, in blood, treasure, and precedent for future Presidents like Wilson, Roosevelt, and Obama.
You say, the slave were not for sale! I see no where in history that any President or Congress asked! But I do note that the United States bought out Fisherman, buying their licenses
and boats and basically gave them no choice. Heck, you could have offered the slave holders twice the value of their slaves and saved money. Much better than War. But, it did not begin
over Slaves, it just ended that way in the history books. But I am not so sure the last chapter is written, the pawns are still in play.

Interesting take.

I'd point out the Emancipation Proclamation was made at a time the big battles were being fought on Northern soil. Gettysburg is quite a ways north.

Only 3 of his appointees were on the court at the time of the Prizes decision.

What's next on your revisionist agenda? Hitler was a nice fellow, very misunderstood? Cancer is good for you? The sun revolves around the earth?

What's next on your revisionist agenda

There is nothing revised about it. Fact are facts. Lincoln provoked the South right from the start, he left his troops in the South occupying their territory after they seceded.

He committed the first act of war, With the Blockade.

If Lincoln had lived, do you know of his plan for the slaves?

I think he was planning to start the "Black Lives Matter" movement.

I think your story is more than a little one-sided. 'Their territory"?

In my view the south overreacted and overplayed their hand. If they hadn't seceded, they probably could have kept the status quo in the south for another 50 years or so.

But that's what happens when conservatives get uppity and attempt revolution. "I want things to stay the way they've always been, so I'm going to destroy everything!"
