The Charlottesville case has again spurred a discussion about describing far-right violence as terrorism. After the al-Qaida attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism was associated primarily with radical Islamist groups based abroad.

The State Department has a list of nearly 60 groups, all foreign, that are identified as terrorist organizations. The vast majority are radical Islamists. And the government can charge a person — American or foreign — with terrorism on behalf of these international groups.

Consider this hypothetical: If the Charlottesville attacker emerged from the car and said he was acting on behalf of the Islamic State, he could be charged with international terrorism, according to Katyal.

Inside the U.S., the political debate appears to be shifting, with growing numbers calling for far-right extremism to be identified as terrorism. But that's almost entirely a political discussion, not a legal one.

On the legal front, there's still a good deal of resistance to creating a criminal charge of domestic terrorism.

"It's an incredibly broad label," said Hina Shamsi, director of the national security project at the American Civil Liberties Union. "There's a real danger of the government criminalizing ideology, theology and beliefs rather than focusing on specific criminal acts."

Denny, the much maligned and discriminated against road ragers respect your brave efforts at protecting their freedoms of not being called a terrorist when they decide to intentionally plow their vehicle at high speeds into a crowd of people who are protesting their beliefs on a national stage.

I think he quoted the patriot act, which has been opposed by civil libertarians since it was proposed.

He quoted the dictionary. I don't think anyone opposes the dictionary, pard.

NPR gets it. Read it and maybe you will, too.

I wonder, if Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton were president, would we be implored to be "guarded against WhiteNationalistoPhobia" after this incident?

This particular incident under these particular circumstances would not have happened if Bernie or Hillary were President.

I oppose the dictionary simply because fuck spelling. Spelling literally ruined my GPA in middle school. Fuck that noise.
Ban the dictionary.

This Trump Q&A. When you think he can't make things worse, he seemingly finds a way to do so. What an embarrassment.

Yes, they were quietly rallying and the other people did not have a permit which I guess is now a capital crime.

...compared with Nazis.

Sure, there are a lot of liberals working for NPR. But they are, from the point of view of this liberal, annoyingly even handed and have righties on all the time.

It's both offensive and promoting the hate mongers.
I think you are correct, but it also can bring awareness and and discussion that can lead to improvements.

I know you don't agree that the president should have said more, but forego that bent for moment. I want people to understand that words of the president have consequences. By showing that daily stormer shit, and how the white surpremisists feel emboldened by Trump not immediately condemning them, that stormer shit might have what I view as a positive effect and convince someone that what the president communicates matters.

You may dissagree with me but I believe the more we sweep this issue under the rug and claim it's just a tiny group not influenced or emboldened by those in power placating them for votes, the worse off we will be.

After WWII many holocaust museums put Nazi propaganda exhibits up. Was that offensive and promote hatemongets? Yes, but I'm sure you can see the reasons why it was still a worthwhile exhibit.

Go back and look at your definition of terrorism. Break the law to influence policy.

My concern isn't about calling this person a terrorist, it's about protecting everyone else from being called one and prosecuted as one when what they do is inconvenient for the government.

The asshole in the charger should get the death penalty.
My definition came from Merriam-Webster.

I think I’m a little behind so sorry if this is a day late and a dollar short.

There was a point in our not so distant past that interracial marriage and homosexuality were considered “silly”.

I don’t know everything but from my experience of human behavior is that you won’t change everyone. But the minute you stop talking about what’s right the only voice people hear is that of the people preaching hate.

Look at homosexuality from the catholic POV. Do you think the Pope coming out and specifically saying the Christians need to apologize to the LGBT community for the way they have been treated would be the same as if he just said people who have been mistreated. No his voice as a leader made a difference. I’m sure it didn’t matter to everyone but being specific matters.
I wonder if the pope could do something about the Catholic Church molesting kids. Hmmmmm I wonder if anybody could do anything. These things will continue to happen. Nobody can stop them. You can't stop people with extreme ideologies. It just doesn't work.

So Trump emboldening them is a good idea? Because it will happen anyway?

Some of you really giving trump way too much credit. Acting like he really plays this chess game. He's an egomaniac that wants to be liked. Never seen him endorse the kkk or anything but I'm sure there are people in powerful positions who are fooling you right now and put on that robe outside the office. Incase you didn't know, powerful people have been doing weird shit forever outside the office. Bohemian grove for instance. Skull and bones, etc. these are proven real places where weird shit happens and the most powerful people are involved, this is who you put your daily energy into? I just don't get it. Like I said when this thread even started, you're just giving this specific minority in America more power, so they will plan these rallies across the states and do the same shit. Then antifa will show up and all out war will happen. Alt let and alt right are both retarded but some people in here give them way too much attention and care. They are the minority and degenerates of the country. Nothing good has ever came from either one.

How is he emboldening them? Probably shouldn't said both sides, probably should of focused on one but you guys act like dude came out and said "great job kkk, keep doing what you're doing". Everything trump has done or said in office is an overreaction. Everything. I mean yeah I disagree with how he goes about things but I'm not gonna make insane assumptions saying he's emboldening these people.
