I agree with HJ...somebody lazy isn't going to be rebounding at the rates that Whiteside has been. I mean, over the last 3 seasons his defensive rebounding rate has been over 35%. And he has a career offensive rebounding rate of 14.1%. Those aren't the marks of a lazy player

now, they may be the marks of a player too concerned about his own numbers, but that's almost impossible to gauge. If you're looking for something to worry about, the fact that Whiteside has a career assist mark of 0.6/game while carrying a usage rate of 22% is kind of a red flag. But there aren't any red flags with his rebounding, defense, or rim protection. And the reality is when you look at the numbers, it was rebounding that was more responsible than anything else for getting swept by the Warriors in the WCF

The thing is, Whiteside never played with players like Dame and CJ, i'm excited to see what he can do with great players and much better shooting

He played with Wade, but at that time Wade past his prime and has never been a great shooter

Stat stuffing could definitely be a concern but like you say, that isn't laziness. Russell Westbrook stat stuffs and has several fatal flaws but he is definitely not a lazy player.

I think you guys will really enjoy the blocks, the dunks, the rebounds, me flex’n,” Whiteside told NBC Sports Northwest. “As far as the team, I definitely want to increase on the record from last year. This is potentially the best team I’ve ever played on talent wise and it’s not many times you get the opportunity you get a real shot at winning the championship. So as a team, I just want to be that defensive anchor and just bring as much as I can to the team.”

Man, I remember when "twin towers" were all the rage. Center-centric teams don't seem to be in vogue anymore. I'm all good with one shot-blocking, rebounding hound in the middle. I hope Whiteside shows us strong glimpses of that quality.

Is a “stat stuffing” center even a bad thing? I mean I get it when it’s westbrook, a guy that has the ball in his hands and runs the offense, but a center? Meh.

I wasn't implying that it's bad, just that I don't get how a stat stuffer gets the lazy label.

Dame-Matthews-Batum-LMA + Hickson = 33-49

Dame-Matthews-Batum-LMA + Lopez = 54-28

(fortunately, unlike JJ but like Robin, Whiteside plays defense & protects the rim)

That’s why the team was bad, not because he hunted rebounds.

The way he protects the rim it's hard to complain about Whiteside's last season in Miami, putting up 12.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.

Hey, I hope Whiteside has a great year and helps the Blazers win a title. He’s completely capable of it. But it does concern me a little when I see comments like these from Heat fans. Open the thread and scroll down. Every Heat fan is complaining about his attitude, his lack of effort or his poor body language:

Have you not read some of the stupid ass shit some of our fans say during games? (Myself included)
No I really am not concerned with his effort.

Yes, I’ve read those comments. Many of them were about Turner, Leonard, Harkless and Aminu, all of whom were shipped off to another team.

We have the mood equalizer. Dame.

Not. Swayed.

Denver "fans" hated on Nurkic's pouting too and it turned out fine for us.

Whiteside is going to be a monster for us! He'll be renewed with energy and will play hard for Dame & mates. As we had previously pursued him as a Free Agent, I also think we may have NO intention of trading him by the deadline. He'll be happy to re-sign here and we have his bird rights (IIRC).

The only way he'll re-sign here is if he takes a MASSIVE pay cut. Like, about 20 million less per year.

My father actually had the gall to suggest to me that we should keep Whiteside and trade Nurk. He thinks Whiteside is the better player.

Of course, he's a Warriors fan who lives in a bubble, and can't understand why nobody likes his team. Go figure.

Whiteside was the highest paid player on a team that was treading water. He's not mature enough to handle the blame that is associated with that.

I'm not concerned about him in Portland, because...
  • He won't be the highest paid player on the team, he won't be the 2nd highest paid player on the team, he'll be the 3rd highest paid player. The pressure is all on Dame and, to a lesser extent, CJ.
  • He can focus on defense, because... "he's got shooters!"
  • He's another year older/more mature, another year closer to retirement, and he's got a change of scenery. We've even seen Boogie start to grow up, so Whiteside can do it, too.
  • He's out of the South Beach environment, and he sounds more than OK with that - another sign he's growing up.
  • The Blazers locker room is a healthy environment, and he's excited to be here. He won't take it for granted.
This is important because a healthy, motivated Whiteside is an allstar/borderline allstar.

So, I think he'll do fine here, but I don't think the Heat fans are necessarily wrong. If he stayed with the Heat, they'd probably struggle (especially since they probably wouldn't have Butler).

So you think he'll be happy coming off the bench when Nurk returns then. I don't and we already saw Nurkic pouting like a baby coming off the bench in Denver so I don't think that will work either.

Kevin McHale came off the bench for the Celtics and was an impact player....if you get that going on...tag team beasting in the paint...they could be amazing playing off each other. I want our first 9 rotation guys to be owning every qtr and the end of the bench finishing blowout wins...not too much to ask for...the alley oop is back baby!
