Whiteside and Nurk could in theory work together in doses, or just enough to allow Whiteside to get starter type minutes overall. I also think both those guys have the potential to expand their range beyond the three point line.
No, neither can shoot the long ball and never will.

It seems he wants to believe they can co-exist. I think it's wishful thinking.

If it’s coming from Whiteside that’s like 3/4 of the battle. With how much Portland leans on their centers defensively, I’d pay Whiteside $10m (or starter type money) to be a “backup.”

Glad that’s settled.

Marc Gasol didn’t start shooting threes until he was 32. Wish someone would’ve given him the same heads up as you just did so he wouldn’t have wasted his time. Oh wait..

If Denver can play Plumlee and Jokic together Portland can try Whiteside and Nurkic. That’d be amazing if Whiteside stayed. My motivation for dealing him has always been because of the uncertainty of his free agency. If the dude is committed to not only staying, but willingness to accommodate other players, keep his ass.
Whiteside and Nurkic would be a better duo at center than Jokic and Plumlee. Then you've got the duo of Anthony and Collins and Lillard with CJ backed up with Simmons and Trent, Hood at small forward would need a quality backup.

Gasol is the unusual exception. Very unusual. Nurkic and Whiteside? Ain't a gonna happen.

Nurkic can do anything he wants on a basketball court. He’s evidently been working on his three point shot lately. He says he wants to come back a better player than before his injury. Whiteside also says he can shoot but hasn’t been given a chance to show it. And they’re both good free throw shooters (relative to their positions) so to dismiss it completely would be a mistake. Shit they don’t even necessarily have to be good. Just make enough to keep defenses honest. Look at Jokic. Dudes been hovering around 30% the last two seasons yet teams still honor it.

Not if it was for a guy who can score like Lillard is this season. Karl Anthony Towns. Imagine having 2 Lillards on offense. That's what I want.
KAT doesn't seem available now but if he becomes available at the draft or in the off season how would you propose getting him if we keep Whiteside?

Welp he wants to stay. Or at least that’s what he says in Quicks latest article. Says he wants to “be on a team for a long time” and thinks he can coexist with Nurk.

I asked if he thinks he and Nurkic can co-exist?

“I think we could, I definitely think we could, because the way we play, it’s not like the 4-man is shooting a ton of 3s,” Whiteside said. “Melo, he don’t really shoot a ton of 3s … he’s mostly posting up and in the lane 2s …”

Hold on, I said. What does a four-man have to do with you and Nurkic? You think you two would play together?

“Yeah. I don’t see why not,” Whiteside said. “I mean 77 (double pick-and-rolls) … I don’t see why not. I think it could work. Me and Skal (Labissiere) played together … I think in Stotts’ system it don’t even matter. He likes having two bigs anyway.”

Yeah, but Stotts always says it matters what position a player can guard. I don’t see Nurk guarding fours, I told him.

“Then I would defend the four,” he said, bringing up Philadelphia using two bigs. “You seen Ingles and what he tried to do tonight …”
I like the optimism but there is no way. He's basing staying on being able to play with Nurk. There is no chance that works and then we screw any lineup flexibility we have.

Phooey!

The last time he was in a contract year he played well enough to get paid $27 million a season. Ask anybody in Miami if he earned that contract. He is playing really well right now - but gambling on him maintaining this level would mean we were ignorant of his past history.

He played even better the season AFTER getting his big contract. I've talked to Miami fans on Reddit about this many times, and they all say he played his best the year after his contract. But then there was some internal issues he had with the Coaching / Staff in the following seasons. Miami has/had a strict and harsh culture, while Blazers are more laid-back and more nurturing (ala Stotts and Dame leadership), so he seems to be happy here. It's a very similar situation to Nurkic & Denver. And you know how that turned out for us.

With the way we are playing right now I think it might be prudent to keep him. When the off season rolls around at least offer him a Nurkic type contract and see what sticks and maybe we could agree to sign and trade if it goes over to what we want to spend.

Let's see what happens and then one of us can say "I told you so", although I probably would never say that.

Next question after Whiteside inevitably stays past the deadline is how much you would pay him, assuming he’s committed to Portland and vice versa. I’d probably top out at $12M per. Can’t be paying him more than Nurkic. $24M for Nurk and Whitesides production? Worth it.

“Do you remember the last time we played Utah?” Hassan Whiteside asked Saturday. “I would go for the block and Gobert would get the (offensive) rebounds. Now, it’s different. We’ve got size. Trevor is unbelievable. He’s smart. He doesn’t take bad shots. He knows how to run out for easy dunks. He’s the definition of a 3 & D guy. This is a great lineup.”

In Quick’s piece, Whiteside expresses a desire to stay in Portland, noting that he owns a home here, and he would like to stay with the team beyond the current season, even after Jusuf Nurkic comes back from his injury.

This is why I think the loss of Zach Collins was bigger than stats would show which would have been from last season. Whiteside becomes Super Whiteside with the right defenders.

Which is one of the reasons why I did not like your trade in the other thread for Towns.
Collins, and Simons, and CJ and Little, and Skal is way to much to give up for Towns and Covington. You can't give up all your youth. And as you say Collins was a big loss to this team

All I can say about Whiteside is finders, keepers.
This was HILARIOUS, however; very true....

My vote doesn't mean crap, but I wanted him so bad back when he signed with Miami. We gotta keep him. We are one seriously dangerous team, once Zach and Nurk come back. Nasty.

I'd take the 8th spot, just so we can spank the L*kers right off the bat. We'll smoke everyone else....

We'll hopefully find out how that looks. A front line of Whiteside/Nurkic , Collins and Ariza should be no fun for anyone trying to score near the hoop.

I'm all aboard the Whiteside train now, because I don't trust jusuf oden to hold up.

If the Blazers are going to keep him, they should sign him to an extension now. Otherwise, trade him for what you can do to help the team beyond the next 4 months.

Good thought, but I doubt he nor his agent will agree to an extension at $12m/year without at least testing the FA market

Can still S&T him this summer. His extension could only hamper our chances to move him later.

I haven't kept track, but reportedly, a lot of next summer's cap-space has vanished in recent trades. The market for big men has already dropped as the NBA evolves. Next summer may be an MLE summer and that could mean Portland could get Whiteside at a bargain...if they want. There's the trade-able contract so many here want

Well Blazers are keeping him
