Yeah, not sitting through 6 minutes of that crap, sorry. Kobe isn't the black mamba. people commonly referred to iverson as the answer. Gervin as the iceman. Not just in print, but the sort of nickname that rolls off the tongue easily enough that broadcasters would use it in their play by play. Iceman with the finger roll, etc. You never hear, hardly ever, anyways, Oh, and a dagger by the black mamba. Nope. That one sucks. Top 10 in last 10 years? Absolutely not.

Always loved Darrell Griffith aka Dr. Dunkenstein!

yeah i understand where u r coming from but nicknames can also be something marketable that a player is remembered for, while it is not the best nickname it is marketable and kobe will be remembered for it

he's not going to be remembered for it, IMO. I think if you ask a casual fan, they won't know his nickname. And by casual, I don't mena people frequenting message boards, or watching every game, highlights on Sportscenter. And for arguably the greatest player of his generation, his nickname would be known to people.
My wife has become a pretty big basketball fan over the years. We haev season tickets, so she goes often. If I asked her who went by that nickname, I don't think she'd know. Along the same lines, if I said Chris Anderson, she likely wouldn't know. But if I said the birdman, she would.

the douche is kobe and check this out [video=youtube;1TO4yeUIPWE] kobe is the black mamba

I just watched that... and I wish I hadn't now. What a pile that thing was, what person who isn't an LA fan would like that?

im not an LA fan, far from it and i didn't like it , i just think it further showed his persona as the black mamba

AK-47 is pretty damn good. He even picked his number to make it work! The Worm was at least interesting, as was Plastic Man. The only funny thing Peter Vecsey ever came up with was "Magna Carter" and he had to be pissed that Kenny Smith's stupid "Half Man Half Amazing" caught on and his didn't (probably because most Americans don't know what the Magna Carta is).
If you're going to give yourself a nickname (that isn't an obvious attempt at a porn star name, like "The Black Mamba" [please - that is pathetic on so many levels. I bet he made it up when he was twelve and getting bullied by his Italian schoolmates]) then you should be like Shaq and change it every five minutes. Some of his "The Big ____" were pretty funny.

I know what the Magna Carta is, but I don't get how it relates to Vince Carter. Is it just the sound-alike of "Carta" and "Carter?" Because if so, that doesn't seem all that clever.

I thought the best nickname for Carter was "Air Canada" though it was hardly classic since it required another player's (Jordan's) nickname to play off of.

So "Air Jordan" was talking about the country, Jordan? I never knew!

Hehe. No, no, Rasta...not at all.

But my understanding of "Air Canada" was that he was the Michael Jordan who played in Canada (home games, anyway).

i know its not from the last decade, but Pistol Pete is a sweet nickname and hes known by that moreso than Pete Maravich.

Dr. J!

Magic Johnson

The Round Mound of Rebound.

the Hick from French Lick.

The Microwave

Magliore = Big Cat

The Brockness Monster = John Brockman (bc hes rarely seen in games)

There were many colorful nicknames right from the beginning of the NBA.

they used to have some sweet nicknames back in the day. I cant stand the Tmac, BRoy, JSmoov, lame nicknames these days. No originality.

Brockness Monster is funny.

The Spanish Armada was sweet, at least for a little while.

I'm partial to Anthony "Pig" Miller.

Greg "Cadillac" Anderson

or John "Hot Rod" Williams... Bimbo Coles. The best was World B. Free.

Shit, I just realized none of these were in the last decade. Nicknames have gone to shit.

The best was World B. Free.
agreed i loved that nickname and yes i think this highlights that the creativity of nicknames has seriously deterioed over time, nicknames are a great part of sports but there isn't that many good ones around any more :( its saddening

Golden State Warriors little known nicknames:

Black Santa = Baron Davis
Stack Jack = Stephen Jackson
Michaelangelo = Al Harrington (teenage mutant ninja turtle reference when he wore orange headband in GS)
Cabbages = Sarunas Jasikavicius
****leavy = Michael Dunleavy Jr.
Colon = Dajuan Wagner (had part of his colon removed lol)
Icky Dog Doo = Ike Diogu
Teddy Ruxpin/Cheesecake = Patrick O'Bryant
Rocky = Belinelli
The Backdoor Boys referred to the Balkan big men of the W's = Biedrins, Zarko Cabarkapa, Skitishvili
The Nightmare = Ekpe Udoh (middle name is Friday and his number was 13 in college, reference to Freddy Krueger movies)

Other cool but little used nicknames:

White Mamba = Dirk
The Villain = Evan Turner

Wagner had his whole colon removed. Not really funny if you think about it.

woah thanks Run BJM i did not know those nicknames now i do! haha

For the fat guys, I loved Mel "Dinner Bell" Turpin. And remember John "Hot Rod" Williams of the Cavaliers? The Bullets drafted another guy named John Williams who was so fat his nickname became John "Hot Plate" Williams.

I always loved "The Glove". Great name.

"Half Man, Half Amazing" was pretty good too.

And of course, there's always...
