Ugh. Layman still can't shoot. His shots are so off that it's embarrassing. I don't get it. His first NBA game he couldn't miss. Ever since then he can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Pat will be cut soon. He is playing so they can make sure that is the right decision. It is.
Layman is playing because he is 6'9", a decent defender with a good basketball IQ and handles, who has a very pretty shot--that Blazers hope some day will actually go in again in games. If it did, he would be a better version of Ryan Anderson. But, something is not working right.
You may be right, but don't underestimate the contract situation. Small expiring contracts give us flexibility in making trades, so signing Pat makes sense from that perspective. He also knows the Blazer plays making him a really good practice player. But, yeah, I don't see him in a Blazer uniform next year unless something drastically changes.
Layman has another year on his contract, then he's in the situation Pat is in now.
I think these are good points. Trade filler. Practice fodder. Watch the game in a suit. Nice work if you can get it.You may be right, but don't underestimate the contract situation. In theory couldn't we cut Pat and sign a D-League guy to a non-guaranteed contact and then trade that D-League guy at some point (if we needed to)? Pat's deal is guaranteed on July 25th. Not sure I would keep him just at the chance of a trade. You may be right, but don't underestimate the contract situation. I would replace Pat with Marshal Plumlee who the Knicks just waived....the kid is going to be really good from the 2 summer league games I watched him play..pure hustle...diving for balls...defensively pesky and seems like he'll be better on offense than Mason ever will.Absolutely, they could, but.... that D-Leaguer will not know the plays, and will not make the rotation, and will not earn significantly less. So, not a lot of incentive there. OTOH, there is an advantage to having a roster spot too.
