Why can't Zach play PF?

Zero reasons why he shouldn't play the 4

I thought so too. Then bnm did his usual...

For now, I like him in his current role. He plays back up center, but we've also seen him play some PF next to both Nurk and Meyers. That's fine, it gets him minutes in a variety of different situations/line ups and I think that experience is important to his development.

I'd like to see him get a few more minutes, but he's foul prone and right now, I think starting him would just get him in foul trouble sooner. I think other starters would go at him from the opening tip trying to get him to pick up a couple quick fouls.

It's only been 4 games, but any chance Zach will be in the running for MIP? His stats last year were abysmal. He's only playing 4 more MPG this year, but his scoring is up 2.5x, his rebounding is up 1.7x. his BLKs are up 4.6x and his STLs are up 2.7x. His shooting percentages are not sustainable, but he's doing EVERYTHING better - by a lot. And I can't help but think he will keep getting better as his confidence grows and the refs ease up on the rookie calls against him.

Who else is having a breakout year (so far)?

BNM

Because Terry is in love with Aminu.

Aiight, I'll be the lone voice of dissent. With Zach at C, Harkless at PF, ET at 3, and Nik at 2, we can switch everything -we're better at defense. Defense matters.
In theory. But our defense has not been good this year.
I'd love to see Collins/Harkless in the starting line-up, but I don't see Collins making it until sometime around the ASS break - but that's only if he continues to play consistently well, and Aminu is his usual one-step-forward-two-steps-backwards and it's just impossible for Terry to ignore.
I'm curious about Harkless/Jake. Is Jake the new Vonleh, or will Harkless get his position back shortly? With Terry I honestly have no idea.

He's gotta learn to keep the ball high and dunk, though.
Truth. Promising signs are that I recall at least 2 authoritative dunks from him so far this season, which feels like 3 more than he had all of last season!

Jake played 6 minutes last game and didn’t start the second half. I think that answers your question.

Why? Based on what? He's a rookie who hasn't even played a minute of NBA basketball.

We know what Leonard is (isn't). He isn't part of either the present or the future of the franchise. The team needs to know if Trent is part of their future or not. If he is, they need to develop him.

That second unit would get killed on the boards but it’d be fun anyway. I know I’d rather have Aminu protecting the rim than Meyers.

Nurk probably won't play more than 30 minutes, some nights closer to 20-25 depending on matchup, fouls, small ball, etc. Zach is needed as the backup 5 so we don't have to play Meyers or Caleb there.

That gives Zach 18-28 minutes at backup C. He is foul prone as well.

If we had a more capable backup C we could give Zach additional minutes at PF.
Zach should get 14mpg at PF and 18mpg at C, with Nurkic getting 30mpg.

Part of the reason I want to see Zach at PF some next to nurk is at least to me Aminu is kind of the weak link in the starting line up, most nights. I know he has games once in a while he’s on but I think Zach could give just as much defensively while being a much more under control offensive player.

I shoulda stated my breakout candidates this season. Always loved Leverts game and i really wanted us to draft Prince too.
Prince has always looked good to me so I guess I didnt think of him as a much improved guy cause Ive always thought he was good.

Zach should play 24+ minutes at PF with Nurk alternating with Meyers at center. And both PF and center positions should contribute 24-32 points each per game.

By optimizing scoring at these 2 positions, the Blazers can be championship contenders.

They should just do what they did in previous years with CJ. Start with both of them in at the beginning of the game and 2nd half and then just stagger their minutes after that so one of them is always on the floor.

Quoting Fez:
ZCo's 96 DRtg is crazy.

His feel/timing on defense is elite.

He can be a Gobert type of defensive anchor.

He's leading the team in +/- per minute. That likely is related to how he's been used - as a center.

Why can't Zach play PF?

Notice that this question was not asked about Ed Davis? We have been spoiled by Ed, and expect the same from Zach. It's not as easy as Ed made it look.

Ed played center all of last year....

I can live with Meyers averaging only 7.3 mpg.
Based on swish3 shooting accuracy, Meyers should be in as center for 8 min.in each of the 2nd and 4th quarters, and shooting at least 3 swish3s in each. When he is making >40% he should continue scoring 3s.

I agree that Zach is excellent as a forward. Zach at forward with Nurk or Meyers at center are a natural combination that can bring more wins.

Nurk and Zach are playing better defense than last year, and seem to be improving. To stay in the top 4 in the West, the Blazers need the big man lineup that these 3 seven footers offer.

Excellent play by our biggest at power forward and center will continue to be an important factor in success for a long time IMHO.

Yeah... But....

I was being generous when I said he should only play 7.3 mpg. Based on BBIQ, Meyers should not be playing.

Against the Rockets Oct 30, the Blazers should play Zach at PF and Chief at SF and guarding Melo. Let's see scoring of >22 points from the PF position.

It's really too bad we can't sub him in for offense and out for defense each possession.
