Why Do You Listen To The Music That You Do?

This can go for the Hip Hop section as well, I just put it in here because it hits more genres than just rap.


For me it's this:
I started by listening to rap and just that. Mostly because of the people that I had surrounding me, that was pretty much all I had exposed to me music-wise. Eventually, I started to branch out of the radio rap (most of which I consider super shitty these days), and now don't listen to nearly as much. Only a few guys like Kweli, Mos Def, Brother Ali, The Micranots, Atmosphere to name a few.

Eventually I started to listen to other types of music, because I wanted to explore other styles and just wanted a change. So I started by listening to what I now consider to be crappy music. Just the super popular radio stuff. Green Day, Nickelback, Linkin Park, that type of stuff. Then I listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Radio popular? Yes. But musically gifted and unique? Also Yes. Listening to that song, more specifically "By The Way", had me go out and get their stuff. They are now my favorite modern band and I have every album. They got me into the classic rock. My now favorite band of all time, Led Zeppelin and all that other stuff. The other alternative stuff I now listen to, such as Radiohead and Weezer. The blues is what I'm getting more and more into right now. BB King, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks Band, and even John Mayer's new album have gotten me really interested lately.

I listen mostly to hip hop, but I think anyone who ONLY listens to one type of music is missing out. I really like bands like Green Day, The Offspring, Linkin Park, and the Killers to name a few.

I guess I listen to any type of music that has meaning. I like music that tells a story. That said, I don't like music about rims and gold chains all that much, OR music about how your girl just broke up with you (emo). I'll listen to anything with substance.

Long story short, I started with rap, got bored. Then I got into R&B, now I'm starting to get into rock/alternative.

I grew up listening to classic rock bands like Bon Jovi, Boston, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, stuff like that. I guess my taste for rock just grew over time, and now I've become a metalhead whose favorites are Megadeth, Slayer, Trivium, Disturbed, Motley Crue, and Sevendust, among a few others. I still listen to those bands at the top of my post, on rare occasions.

I grew up listening to country music...yea....I know, yuck. Then probably....7th or 8th grade, I heard the song Hemorrhage by Fuel, and that really turned me on to rock music. Now I listen to everything from Maroon 5 and the Goo Goo Dolls to bands like Trivium and Slipknot and a lot of stuff in between.

Why though? I have varying reasons why I listen to the music I listen to. A lot of it has to do with being able to relate to a lot the songs by the artist. But aside from that, I also listen to bands that great musicianship, even if they're not a very good band lyrically. Basically, as long as it appeals to the ear in some way, I'll listen to it.

I have been brought up around rock from family friends, so I got into Green Day and The Offspring. That grew to Metal, then I branched out to everything, now i'm getting into alternative hip hop. I bounce around everywhere now. I think thats the way to go.

I just like music that is well done, energetic, and fun to listen and dance to.

Rock, Folk, Pop, Rap, R&B. It all depends of the time of my life.

Right now I am enjoying some Classical Music, especially from the Baroque Period, composers such as Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Handel, Corelli, and Bach. From the Renaissance Period, my favorites are from Burgundian School (Dufay, Binchois, Busnois, and Dunstaple).

But then you realize their diversity isn't like an In Flames, Atmosphere, This Will Destroy You, Nas, Brand New, Classic Crime type spectrum, but a top 40 one. Now I'm not against Top 40 listeners, but they do not listen to everything. They listen to some of each. Therefore when i say, as you will see, I listen to almost everything, people assume it's Lil' Wayne, Fall Out Boy and anything else popular. And I'm not calling anyone out by this, I just see this a lot, especially in high school.

I grew up listening to the '60s and '70s bands that my dad liked and played: the Beatles, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Simon & Garfunkel, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, etc.

In sixth grade, Appetite For Destruction by Guns & Roses came out, and that was the first band I "discovered" for myself. The experience of hearing a band for the first time, getting caught up in their music and listening the hell out of it was a pretty great experience, so I've been heavily into music ever since. Any time I heard about a band or genre from a friend, I tried to hear some of it.

Then came college and broadband Internet connection. Suddenly, finding and exploring music became ridiculously easy. It was so easy to listen to dozens, or hundreds, of bands from whatever genre one was into at the time. I would say listening to music was more my major as an undergraduate than anything I was supposedly studying. I listened to a lot of hard rock, metal, hip-hop, punk (mostly from the '70s) but especially got into indie rock and indie pop.

These days, I'd say I'm something of an indiehead, but there's nothing more addictive to me than great guitar pop/rock. A great, catchy song with a strong guitar hook or riff is ideal. Depending on mood, though, I'll listen to plenty of other things...punk, metal, hip-hop, soul, etc.

I listen to Sublime, 311, Arctic Monkeys, Dave Mathews Band, The Strokes, and then rap and hip-hop. My friend got me into Sublime and 311. My cousin got me into Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes. Then people around me got me into Dave Mathews, and rap and hip-hop.
