Why doesn't Portland get another major franchise

Don't you people like to be entertained? Don't you want to watch real sports? You should be demanding another franchise. its not 1970 anymore, portland is the only major city on the west coast with 1 franchise. Even Buffalo which is half your size has 2. whats the deal?:drumroll:
 
The region's ratio of population to professional sports franchises is behind only New York and Los Angeles.

It comes down to politics and money.
 
Well, keeping Portland weird has a price. In 1980, there were nine Fortune 500 company headquarters in the Portland area. Today, there is only one.

It's not just population, it's corporate support. The companies that advertise, buy stadium rights and purchase luxury suites. Portland may as well be Omaha in that sense. Wait, Omaha has six F500 HQ's. :sigh:
 
Leadership in Portland sucks, too.

They've been working on getting a convention center hotel for TWENTY YEARS.

Has little to do with weirdness, and more to do with the fall of the timber industry, plus corporate takeovers.

Most cities work hard to attract and retain corporate headquarters. Portland's city government seems to believe it's above doing it. I guess we'll just have to wait for Voodoo Doughnuts to become a Fortune 500 company.

There are very few fortune 500 companies that would even consider moving here in their wildest brainstorming sessions. We had some because they were homegrown. We lost them due to events mostly beyond our control. We've still got Nike because it was homegrown. If we want more we need to grow the companies that are here, not recruit new ones. Yeah, maybe Voodoo donuts.

The dumbest thing ever? Interesting; why just today I was thinking to myself that I've seen 3 or 4 "dumbest things ever" just by opening a few select threads on this forum.

Dude. The "keep Portland weird" movement has nothing to do with not tearing down the Memorial Coliseum, it has to do with supporting small local businesses and keeping franchises like Wal-Mart out.

But yeah, it's the dumbest thing ever. Good to hear.
 
keep it weird portland! slogans like that are gonna atract a lot of free agents and potential new bidders for a new franchise here. should be called keepin in real stupid.
