Why is the Blazers broadcast so terrible?

Yeah, me and HCP have already established this. Either way, if I go look at the other broadcasts and see that they look funky, I'll just wonder why all these teams can't get better designers.

I say this in no bragging way, but in my prime of photoshop work, I could produce some better looking graphics. And I learned most of my skills outside of schooling.

Money. They don't need to develop better programming because they know the fans will watch anyway. Do you think the fans watch the Blazers because they have a good program? They have the advantage of being the only game in town. You either want to watch the team or you don't. Why spend a lot of money on something that really doesn't make much of a difference in viewership?

Then again someone could look at what you did and laugh. It's easy to be a critic. :)

Hey ,Hey. Maybe you should go down and apply for a position with Blazer Broadcasting and apply your experience and expertise to their show.

Or maybe you need to bring back the jazz band intro FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing says NBA like a bunch of guys not really playing instruments off beat.

Designing for television is simply different than designing for the Web or for print. Generally you have less resolution (standard definition TV is 640x480, iirc) and the audience tends to be sitting much farther back from the screen... which means that details get lost even when you do have the pixels to play with.

Local television commercials almost invariably stink, and that's not the fault of the Blazers or its crew :)

The only complaint I have is the terrible picture that I get on Comcast in Seattle when I watch the Blazers. There is no HD signal and the SD looks like total crap... but I don't think that THAT is the Blazers' fault, either.

I think that the Blazers' actual production value is as good as any team's in the NBA, and I've been watching League Pass for years.

Ed O.

One example: the commercial with a black background and a Blazers logo with smoking coming up. The effect looks unbelievably cheesy. The acting is so terrible, it's as if they don't even do double-takes in an attempt to save film. I've seen the way B-Roy talks and acts in an official NBA commercial and also ones he does for Comcast and Ford. The difference is night and day. It's like the director doesn't even tell them to try to act interested.

That's a Comcast/CSN promo that they produce/direct... not Blazer Broadcasting.

I think we have one of the best broadcasting and production crews in the business, especially if you consider we are a small market team. There are several teams that dont even do all their games in HD!!!

my only real complaint with the broadcasts, and its not just the blazers as it happens in all basketball games, is after every score, why is it necessary to show a close up of the guy who made the basket? at least twice a game the inbound pass is stolen or other game action is missed while we are stuck watching some guy run up the court. couldnt they just have a pop up next to the score saying "mathews 2 point fg" or something? or when the announcers are talking about a coach or a player on the bench, do we really need to see his face for 10 seconds while game action is happening? couldnt they have a pip at the bottom of the screen? pip would be nice for replays also to ensure game action isnt missed. i just dont like missing plays because someone else is deciding what they think is important to viewers, especially considering pip technology is decades old.

Ed speaks the truth. When I watch SD games on my leaguePass on my HDTV they always look like shit! Thanks BeerBoy for the props!

This bugs the hell out of me, too.

No complaints about the broadcasts here--I've also had League Pass for years and there are much, much worse broadcasts out there in the NBA. However, the one thing that does piss me off on CSNNW, is the dumb-fuck that does the voice-overs who says, "Blizzers." Somebody needs to teach that sorry sum'bitch how to pronounce the word Blazers. I mean, really, it's not that difficult... especially, you know, when it's actually your job, and whatnot! :)

Hey, HCP! This guy is the first rookie ever to post here that you haven't hazed, for being a rookie. In fact, I've never seen you so reasonable and "professional." Playing favorites? Or did your wife hack your account? :devilwink:

I know, I was actually trying to see what his actual complaints are. I was curious, but all of them actually don't apply to our show. So ya........... Hey Rook go get me a fucking beer! And you obviously didn't read the rules....... You can't start threads til you've got at least 500 posts!

Ahh. That's better.

I hate when they cut to the shot where you're watching the action from an "on court" vantage point... so you're watching from the halfcourt line. It's cool and all but it's hard to follow what's going on.

I'm with you on that. I think TNT does a great job of showing game action from a ton of different angles. They also have 12 cameras compared to our 7.

For years I considered that angle jinxed (especially when it was on NBC); we always seemed to miss the shot or lose the ball when the camera angle was that angled behind the play shot.

It's because I can't focus on the ball going in!

Yeah, I hate those gimmicky camera effects that take you on the court or whatever.

I'm trying to watch a freaking basketball game. Please, just show me the freaking game from a decent seat in the stands, and don't cut from the action to show a 10 second close up of anyone.

Thank you.

Oh that's been the case for YEARS. Nothing new there.

Schonley, for all of his faults, didn't sound like he wanted to shoot himself when the team was losing.

Schonley had no faults. He will always be the Jesus of the Blazers.

"You've GOT.......... to MAKE........ your freethrows."

YES SCHOLNEY I KNOW THAT SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY ABOUT THE FUCKING FREETHROWS!

And then there were the times when the Blazers were down by more than 14 points when he'd start getting more excited about the other team's made baskets than ours. That one really bugged me.

HCP, you know why didn't Bex didn't stick around?

Always been way too cheesy.always.even the 90s were bad

X

That's just how PA rolls.

So sad, really.

The man who created The Experience Music Project and plays rock guitar covers with his billionaire buds has oonly corny canned cliche crap played at his games.

HCP, you know why didn't Bex didn't stick around?

She got a better offer from Fox down in LA. Clippers games, NFL, College football/hoops and Dodgers baseball. 10X the work. Plus she lived in LA in the off season. Couldn't turn it down. Talk to her every now and then, she's lovin' it down there.

My man love for Bill Schonley blinds me to any of his faults.

I'm guessing she lived in LA and she got a job in the #2 media market in the country.

Edit: Oops. I should have read HCP's reply.

The Schonz is great! How anybody can have a complaint about him is beyond me!

Agreed. I think one of the most prescient points I've ever heard Isaac and Big Suke make was the day they identified Schonz as "the Bob Barker of Portland." It doesn't matter how old he gets, how far removed he is from his signature job, or how much of his original skill he loses--every room he's in is cooler for him being there, and everyone he meets is happier for having come in contact with him.

So many memories tied up in that voice of his; any faults he may have had may as well have never existed. Schonz is the man.
